Chapter 21: The Decision
Sapphire walked over to Moon and Cerulean with Crystal at her hooves. "She's better!" she cheered in delight.
Crystal began to play with Chocolate and Turquoise.
Moon turned around. He pinned his ears back at her, about to take his anger out on her. he turned around to Cerulean. "Please come back!" he pleaded.
Sapphire whinnied. "Fine. I'll leave," she said madly.
Moon looked at Cerulean. Chocolate came up to her sire and nipped him playfully. Moon reached down to nuzzled her.
Sapphire snorted. "Don't take it out on me."
Crystal also nipped her sire. She wanted to play too.
Chocolate began to run around. Moon felt like a colt again as he followed his foal. He wanted to run free again, alone with the wind in his mane, when he didn't have to fight stallions everyday and urge mares that he loved him. Crystal followed her sire. "Wait for me daddy!" she said to him.
Moon trotted with his neck arced. Chocolate nickered in delight.
"Why are you and Cerulean fighting?" Crystal asked bluntly.
"None of your business," Chocolate blurted out to her sister.
The kind stallion reached down to nuzzled her. "I don't really know." was all he could say.
Crystal whinnied. "You don't need to be mean," she said in a small tone.
Moon looked down at her. He almost cried hearing the words of his foal. "You foals," he said. "Got more sense than us." he nuzzled Crystal and Chocolate.
"I know. We're very wise," she laughed, grooming her sire's leg since that's all she could reach. She was still small and not that tall.
Moon reached down and began to lick Crystal. Chocolate came over and began to lick Crystal too.
Crystal smiled. "Hey Chocolate, wanna explore?" she asked.
Cerulean was standing off to herself, obviously disinterested in either Moon, Sapphire or the foals. Even walking away from the herd hadn't helped. Why had they followed her? Star was Moon's lead mare, not her.
Sapphire looked over at Cerulean. She nuzzled her. "About before... I'm sorry," she said honestly to her.
Moon came up to Cerulean. "I'm sorry," he said. "Truly, I am." he nuzzled her mane.
Cerulean didn't turn around. "Have you not figured it out yet? I don't like being one of your lowly broodmares, Moon. I will find a herd where I am the favorite."
"I don't pick favorites," he said. "I love all of my mares the same. I promise you that."
Sapphire nodded in agreement to Moon. "He doesn't lie," she told Cerulean.
Cerulean dropped her head, staring at the ground. "Will you just let me go? If I discover that I truly love you, I'll come back. If not, we'll both move on."
Moon nickered. "Remember, you're going to have my foal," he said. He nuzzled her and nickered softly again. "Please come back. Or at least know that I love you." He reached down to nuzzle Turquoise and Chocolate. Chocolate looked at her sire. Moon backed off, but he still looked at her with love in his eyes.
"I know," Cerulean said. She nuzzled Moon then looked at Chocolate and Turquoise. "Come on."
The mare herded her twins gently ahead of her. Cerulean was on a mission...to determine whether she truly loved Moon or not.
Chocolate trotted alongside her twin.
Moon watched the three.
Cerulean stopped when Moon was no longer in sight.
Turquoise looked at Chocolate. She was puzzled. "Why're we leaving?"
Moon watched as his family vanished. He galloped away, crossed the stream and kept galloping, trying to hold back the tears. But he couldn't. He let them fall, let the wind carry him, let Cerulean break his heart.
"Why are we leaving?" Chocolate asked. "I like to play with dad and the foals."
"I have to sort something out," Cerulean said. She looked at her twins. "Maybe it won't take long."
"You are a foal." Turquoise snorted.
Chocolate looked at her mom. "What?"
"Whether I really love your sire or not," Cerulean said. Why was she discussing this with foals? I don't love all that attention he lavishes on Sapphire and Crystal!
"But why shouldn't you love daddy? He rescued you from that big red stallion! And he loves us!"
Cerulean turned and snapped at the foal. "Because I'm selfish!"
Turquoise wisely dodged out of the way, lest her dam aim for her next.
Chocolate backed and bumped into Turquoise accidentally.
Cerulean whinnied loudly, trying to call another horse to her. Perhaps talking would help alleviate her clouded mood.
Turquoise stumbled aside, in a tangle of long legs.
Lana wandered around. She saw a blue roan with two foals knocking each other down.
Chocolate nearly tripped. She tossed her head and began to wander a little ways off.
Cerulean kept the foals in her sight. "Don't wander off without me. I don't have the benefit of extra eyes right now."
Chocolate grumbled. "Alright." she went to her mother to nurse.
Lana's curiosity got the best of her. She began to trot down to the horse and foals.
Cerulean's ears swiveled then pricked forward. She'd spotted the strange mare coming towards her. "Who are you?" she called out.
Turquoise nursed on Cerulean's other side.
"Lana," the paint said boldly. "And you?"
"Cerulean," said the blue roan. She nodded at each foal. "Chocolate, Turquoise."
"Nice to meet you," she said. "What are you doing out here all alone? You must have a herd." Lana spoke to the mare as if she were a lost foal.
"I'm out here to discover what I really want. I...had a herd. I walked out on it," Cerulean said.
Lana gave Cerulean a raised eyebrow. She cocked her head. "How unwise," she said. "I know of this vicious stallion that likes to hurt mares and kill foals. You and your foals are at risk out her alone. I'm sure you had a stallion that took care of you." she said.
"I had a stallion, and we'll leave it at that," Cerulean said. She pinned her ears at mention of the vicious stallion. "He'll have to kill me first, and then I'll be of no use to him."
"Oh...I'm sure he's not that bad..." Lana said. "Whats his name?"
"Moon," Cerulean said. She lowered her head and nuzzled her twins.
"Oh." Lana didn't want to be nosy but she would burst if she didn't ask. "Wha'd he do?"
"He claims to not have favorites, but it's plainly seen in his eyes. He has a favorite. I was no more than a broodmare," Cerulean said. "I figure I can do better."
"Oh." she said. "Maybe you just misinterpreted."
Cerulean's mind flashed visions of Moon and Sapphire, and she tossed her head. "I don't think so."
"I lived in a herd once," she said. "It was made up of loners. The lead stallion one day was playing with his mare, Diamond. He spent the whole day with her and never paid me any attention. It happened for 3 days in a row. Just when I was fixing to leave, he walked up to me and started nuzzling and nickering to me. Turns out, he did love me. He just wanted to spend some time with Diamond. Maybe Moon does love you, and you don't give him the chance to show it."
Sapphire walked over to Moon and Cerulean with Crystal at her hooves. "She's better!" she cheered in delight.
