Chapter 15: The Majestic Morgans
It seemed like the pursuers were gone, (Sapphire and Crystal) so Stardance's gait slowed. The dun dragged her front hoof along the ground, leaving a gash. Aqua walked around the wilderness. She whinnied. Stardance was busy watching Kellen from the shelter of a grove of trees. She didn't hear the other mare whinny, yet wouldn't have whinnied back even if she did. The dun mare was simply looking for a herd, and there was one about a hundred yards away. This was not the time to go seeking out a mare, with her chances of joining a herd so close.
Wildfire had his nostrils flared, breathing deeply the scent of other horses. He lived as a loner, existing by roaming the borders to all the territories. The Morgan enjoyed this life, but every-so-often, an urge to find a mare would hit him; this was one of those times.
Tossing his head, he whinnied shrilly, giving his location away, quite eagerly.
Stardance was having a fine time chowing down on the lush grass of Kellen's herd, but curiosity tore her away and towards the stud. Snorting curiously, the dun mare resumed nervous trotting... but this time, it wasn't away from others; it was to them. Wildfire dropped his head, sniffing. He had picked out Stardance's trail, as it was the freshest. With renewed vigor, he trotted on, following the scent. Whatever instinct this was that popped up sometimes and drove him to seek mares, he didn't fight it. He would, however, just as easily ignore other horses if the urge wasn't there.
Stardance eagerly trotted towards the approaching scent, whinnying shrilly. Aqua saw her and whinnied again.
Wildfire tossed his head, breaking into an excited canter. His hurried pace soon brought him within Stardance's sight. Slowing, he shook his head and lashed his tail, basically showing off.
A jealous Aqua watched the elegant pair.
Stardance snaked out her velvety muzzle and sniffed at Wildfire, nickering softly.
Aqua grazed on some grass. She continued to watch Wildfire and Stardance. What a handsome stallion, she thought and trotted the opposite direction. "Maybe I'll get to meet him some day."
Wildfire flicked his tail in excitement, stretching his neck to sniff Stardance. "Hello," he said softly.
"Hi," Stardance said, lifting her head regally. "Who are you?"
"Wildfire," said the bay Morgan. "And you?"
"Stardance," the dun Morgan said, a hint of pride in her tone.
Wildfire admired Stardance from her head to her tail. She was built like the typical Morgan, her proud headset easiest to notice.
Stardance flicked her tail, sizing the stallion up herself.
Wildfire swiveled an ear, listening for things unheard. After a while, he lowered his head, nipping a mouthful of grass.
Timeskip
Wildfire was grazing lazily, casting admiring glances Stardance's direction. Hers would be his first foal one day.
Stardance lapped at a nearby creek, using all her willpower to not kick Wildfire for his staring.
Wildfire shook his head, his mane dancing from side-to-side, then meandered off, head lowered, nipping at grass.
Stardance began to slowly wander away, closing in the distance between her and a fairly large coniferous forest.
Wildfire lifted his head, turning to follow Stardance. As far as he was concerned, his life as a loner was over.
Stardance craned her neck to look behind her, towards the place where she sensed someone following her. Seeing that it was just Wildfire, she snorted and turned back around.
Wildfire flicked his tail lazily as he plodded along behind Stardance. He wondered where she was taking them.
Stardance proceeded to walk into the woods, barely casting a glance back to Wildfire.
Wildfire kept pace behind Stardance. He'd noticed her indifference but was too much of a loner to care. If they became separated, nothing had really changed for him.
Once they had reached a clearing just inside the woods, Stardance aimed her muzzle to the wind. Satisfied, she turned to Wildfire, nickering.
Wildfire stopped, listening. When the wind brought him nothing of interest, he nickered back at Stardance.
Stardance tore at a tuft of grass and looked at Wildfire yet again, her gaze gentle and kind.
Wildfire grazed hungrily. He glanced at Stardance from time-to-time, nickering with admiration. He couldn't help himself; she was his first and only mare.
Stardance left her place ahead of Wildfire, and headed for the bay stallion, nickering. She dropped her head to graze once she was facing him, almost touching muzzles.
Wildfire lifted his head ever-so-slightly and blew gently into Stardance's nostrils.
Stardance slowly began to work out a tangle in his mane.
