i had 2 female pekins about a year old each and ive kept them as pets in my backyard and they have been so much fun but a few nights ago something killed one and now the surviving hen just sits in front of my backdoor looking in and i realized today when i was outside that shes not looking inside but she is standing next to her reflection probably because shes so sad and lonely.

my question is,will pet ducks have the necessary skills to survive if i just turn her loose in our local park so she can be with her kind or would she probably be unequipped to handle that ?

i could also try to find a farm or something but that takes time and i want her to be happy again.

I would try and find her a home at a farm or with someone that has more ducks or get her a new friend and keep both.

I'm sorry you pekin lost her partner. Unfortunately, abandoning her at the park is not a great solution, nor is it any more legal than leaving any other pet at the park.

Perhaps someone on your local thread would want to take her in.

There is also a buy/sell/trade section on BYC for rehoming birds.

You could also try a local poultry Facebook group or Craigslist to rehome her.

It sounds like you are trying to give her a good life and she needs a duck friend, but the park is not the best solution. Good luck.

If you release her at your local park, she will definitely die. If she doesn't get eaten by predators in the first few weeks, which is very likely, she'll die of starvation or disease. Pet ducks aren't equipped to survive in the wild, just like you can't release your pet dog and expect it to live. If she does survive long enough to reproduce (VERY unlikely), she will make babies that will spread bad genetics through the wild population. So, if you can't keep your duck and want it to live, you need to find it a new home. She will be fine for a few weeks/months alone as you look for someone with other ducks.

No no no, don’t turn her loose. That would condem her to a sad scary death. Domestics can not survive outside of human care. She saw her friend get killed and is lost without her. You need to get another duck ASAP and introduce them slowly if the new duck is a baby. Both ducks need to be locked up securely every night before full dark. If you don’t want her, see if a farm that has ducks would want her. Or put an add on Craig’s list.
Please don’t turn her loose, that would be the worst thing. The domestics die very quickly in parks and it’s a bad death.
I’m very sorry you lost your pet, I know how that feels.

So sorry you lost your Pekin and your remaining bird is so lonely! Is it an option to get another Pekin, or other duck as a friend for your singleton?

Poor baby! Yeah, she needs a buddy. If it were me in your shoes, I might have my husband get on Facebook poultry groups to see if anyone wanted to either take her into their flock, or donate a duck to the cause. Where I live, Facebook is the way to go to find all things poultry, but a local BYC group may help as well. If she likes human attention, some extra lovins might help pacify her until you find a better solution.

If you don't do Facebook, there may be someone close to you that does, and wouldn't mind putting up a post on your behalf.
