Wildlife experts: What kind of animal is this? ~New Pics page 11~

Mountain Beavers aka "Boomers", are around here. I have never actually seen one as they are elusive, but I have seen evidence of them on some of the sites where I work. They are the only animal known to forage on our northwest native swordfern, and they will cut them off and take a bundle of the fronds back to their burrow as food stores. I have followed their dropped fern pieces, crawling on my belly through the brush to find the burrow but have never had any luck. They make a boom sound call with their mouths, very interesting. I've always wanted to see one. So far no luck. They are like the chupacabra around here, many think they are a mythical creature...

I'm thinking that would be a mighty small bear cub if that pic is in August! He's not much bigger than the coon and that looks to be a pretty small to average coon. Must have been born late.

Of all the suggestions, he looks the most like a beaver without a tail....but how likely is that? How often do they really lose their tails? And if you look closely you can almost see a bottom canine tooth....not a beaver.

I'm still mystified!

That is pretty much the position I've arrived at also. Looks like a tailless beaver, but I can find no pics on Google. However
there are lots of tailless raccoon pics and videos such as foxinachickenhouse posted.

Are you sure those three pictures are the same animal? I can't tell what your first mystery animal is, but the second sure looks like a rat from the tail and the third sure looks like a raccoon because of the tail.

As someone who is familiar with most types of wildlife...

I'm still having trouble with this one! I think it most looks like a tailless beaver or raccoon, maybe a bear cub (though I don't think so), or... I don't know! I am stumped! I wish there were more pictures so we could have a definitive answer.

Come on BYC detectives, we've got to figure this one out!

I must know what critter the mystery animal is!

She put in the pics of the possum and coon for size reference.
