Hi everyone :)

I've hatched and raised Brahmas and absolutely love them but noticed they go broody too often especially in Spring. As much as I love watching them raise their own young it's frustrating because they stop laying especially in Spring when most chooks lay the best eggs.

If I cross bred a Brahma with another breed of chicken that doesn't go broody like for example an Isa Brown, Rhode Island, Australorp will they still take from the genetics of the Bramha or is it likely they'll lay more and go less broody?

These are my gorgeous Brahmas and I love em!

In my experience, broody mamas produce broody daughters. Out crossing to non broody breeds might reduce the frequency of broodiness in the offspring.
Ah I see, that makes sense especially that Brahmas have a high chance of broodiness.

You get broody brahmas? We have 8 and only one has even attempted to try to go broody lol now our Australorps, our of 8, 4 of them tried for three months lol

Our olive egger(BCM cross) and our buff Orpington go broody the most- monthly lol

I was just searching what Brahma crosses look like (buff Brahma over black Australorp) and now I'm curious on broodiness cross lol

Our Brahma hens go broody like crazy, they go that broody that we loose egg production because all they wanna do is sit on eggs! They start from Spring all the way to late autumn and only stop when the weather really cools down. That's why I'm wondering whether a brahma cross would be less likely to go broody and focus more on laying, it'll be an easier process for them too rather than sitting on eggs for 3 weeks :)

My brahma hen has went broody once. She was a mean broody.
Ive noticed mine go broody in the fall instead of spring i have a bantam cochin whois broody right now.

Could you use your brahma hens to hatch out pure eggs of a different breed maybe? I know there are plenty of breeds who are good layers as well as good for meat. But dont brood.
Since most hens will brood if they are flufff and the right breed

Yeah my Brahmas will sit on and hatch any egg you put under them. They've hatched other breeds, guinea fowls to even ducks and it's hilarious watching how a different breed just follows their brahma mummy around everywhere. It's funny because guineas don't ever forget their parents and even now as adults the guinea fowls still follow their brahma mama around everywhere and are highly protective of her!

When she goes broody, slip some egg laying breed chicks under her, not a dual purpose breed. She will raise them up and they will lay eggs for you.
At the moment we've got too many chooks, ducks and guinea fowls so I guess we've got a good balance of egg layers and our brooders. At least I know if I need more chicks our brahma girls will do the job :)
