Will a cockerel try to mate a pullet?

Pullets are roughly 13 weeks and cockerel is 14 weeks. He tried to mate our hen the other day. She is maybe 6-7 years old? Not sure. But it was a surprise to her. I was about to pick her up so she squatted and the cockerel took to moment.
This morning the cockerel tried to (I think) mate one of the golden comet pullets but she denied and he moved on.
We are new to flock interactions. Anyone have any words of wisdom? Thank you.

Males become sexually mature about 2 months before females.
It can be quite stressful, and even injurious, to the flock and certain birds if he's not cool about it. If he gives up quick and moves along, that is good.

Aart, honestly you should consider a career in making warning labels for cockerel owners you've got a knack for it you'd make a killing.:)
