I have moved my Bantam and her 3 newly hatched chicks (they hatched Monday and Tuesday) from their hidden spot behind a board that was leaning up against the coop which I had covered with bales of pine shavings and blankets, into a cage outside in the run where they are protected from the cats. Mama has already started sitting on the chicks for the evening in the cage. I have put a frost blanket over the cage. It is to be 43 F here tonight and 75 F tomorrow. Do you think they'll be okay outside, or do they need to be in a warmer spot? Mama was not happy with the cage at first, but she seems to have settled down for the night.

I should add that the Bantam is a stepmom to the 3 chicks. She hatched them, although they were not her eggs. So far, she appears to be a great little mama. She is really taking care of them and not pecking them or anything.

Why, thank you, Gander007! Cute! Update: Chicks made it fine through the night, but Mama is tearing up the paper towel flooring, so I replaced it with cardboard. She has burrowed into the shavings, and the bluest chick is walking on her back and head. They are sooo adorable!

Chickens like to use them claws and tare up everything they stand or walk on so I normally put sand or short sections of straw for them to scratch around and play with .....

These should be my next hatch

in a couple of weeks ...

Fun, gander007! I hadn't thought about sand... They would love that!
