Yep, old man winter couldn't just let us keep rolling on with our nice mild winter, oh no, gotta throw some BS at us! I swear we get at least 1 of these events every yearWe've got some nasty weather coming this weekend. Lows hovering around 18. It won't get above freezing on Sunday. Nasty freezing rain.
I'm not worried about the chickens. They're pretty much set up. Except for their waterers, of course. I'll have to just bring the water all inside at night. Hopefully the rain barrel system I build will withstand the freeze.
The goats I worry about. Especially knowing Daisy is going to have a baby any day now. I'll move them into the maternity ward with a heat lamp secured. I'll then move Beau back into the goat pen (he's currently living in the large pig pens) because there's deep straw for him to cuddle into. He loves the cold so he'll be just fine. I'll have to remove his water at night too.
And.... drip all the faucets. Yay...
I honestly don't know how people who live up North deal with this. Texas basically shuts down during our rare winter storms.
I'm sure Beau will make sure the goats are snug as a bug!I'm actually still keeping Beau separate from the goats when not supervised. He's still showing too much interest in them and I'm afraid he's going to hurt them trying to mount. Vet says he should calm down after being neutered in a couple months. He's about 14months old now so hopefully matures soon.Yep, old man winter couldn't just let us keep rolling on with our nice mild winter, oh no, gotta throw some BS at us! As someone who has lived mainly in the South, I figure it's because of two things: (1) they get more serious winters, so they're prepared: their houses are built tighter, pipes are better protected, more snowplows and quickly deployed, and they've learned to drive on snow, and (2) they are more likely to get "just" snow, but we get freezing rain. No one can drive on slick, solid ice!... I honestly don't know how people who live up North deal with this. Texas basically shuts down during our rare winter storms.
I feel like I can weigh in on this a bit. I’m from Indiana so not the coldest place around but I did work outside in single digit temperatures for a 12 hour shift Monday night.I honestly don't know how people who live up North deal with this. I worked snow removal, shoveling drains, doorway entrances and stairwell at a college. I wore layers and the Carhartt bibs, coat I took off when I went inside for break.I often take my breaks in my truck because if I go inside the building wearing all my cold weather gear for more than a few minutes I’ll start sweating and if I do sweat then go back outside I’ll be miserable for at least an hour as I adjust to the cold again.
-20f is a whole different kind of cold. I’ve only experienced it a few times that’s the kind of cold you feel in your lungs.I worked snow removal, shoveling drains, doorway entrances and stairwell at a college. I wore layers and the Carhartt bibs, coat I took off when I went inside for break.
One time I had a warm bottle of pop in an outside pocket and it was slush after less than an hour. -20f out of the wind.
