Here’s Dragon. In this photo, taken today, she’s 164 days old. She’s a Welsh Harlequin (possibly some Buff Orphington, Mallard, or Cayuga blood in her) and is female. She is our brave Dragon. This wonderful duck has nearly died from smoke inhalation during a fire caused by her brooding lamp, upon recovery and moving outside, she survived a devastating injury from a hawk attack, then had her neck nearly snapped by the puppy... and several major storms and flooding of her creek that nearly carried the coop away. She’s special because I hatched her from an egg and, whenever I could, sat right next to the incubator, waiting. She also loves to sit and nom on my foot.

Behind Dragon is Abigail, who has a mallard father and buff mom which brought about her dusky gene. She has a love of plantain, dandelion greens, my braid, whatever her sisters are eating, and sitting on my back like a confused parrot. Abigail survived the fire, but escaped any hawk injuries by fleeing to the coop with her sister, Firequacker. The rest of the flock didn't make it.

I learned nearly everything I know about ducks from Storey’s Guide to Raising Ducks. I checked it out from the library and renewed it half a dozen times. Someone requested it so I had to return it and when I went to check it out again the next week, that person lost it and the library didn't get a new copy. I learned so much from that book, but I bet I know I could learn a lot more now that I have experience with waterfowl now!

(This is her recovery, if anyone is interested: but be warned there are pictures of her injuries and they are bloody.)

View attachment 1564617 This is Louie
Louie is around 3 months old, and is a fawn and white Indian runner
I’m not entirely sure of their gender, though they are most likely a girl.
She is very special to me because of her copious amounts of affection for me, though the others show their love in their own way, Louie was loving from the very beginning. I always doubt myself, and constantly worry that they might hate me and I’m horrible, but Louie always tells me otherwise. From the beginning she would come and curl up beside my neck, and either chew on the back of my shirt or fall asleep. Now, she still tries, even though she is far too big, she still buried her bill between my scarf and my neck. She curls up on my lap whenever she can and chews on my hoodie laces. One time she even waddled over to me as I was tending to the others and fell asleep on my foot! She’s always the bravest and most trusting, the first in line to see what I gave them or to get closer to me in general. And now whenever I come outside I hear her familiar call and the excited flapping of them all running towards me. I love my Louie

It’s amazing how much can change just in a weeks time. My entered pic for my drake, Noah, was post #320. The male coloring of his feathers was just coming in. It has come along so much within the week. I can see his drake curl is coming in as well. These are just a few extra pics.

I really like this bottom pic. His head feathers were ruffled up a bit and I think he just looks so handsome. I don’t know if you can see it on a pc but if you’re on a phone and blow up the pic, you can see the lacing or whatever it’s called on the grey feathers. It reminds me of spider webs lol. I think it’s neat.
