Winter is coming...

I have a heated nipple waterer. If I can't train them to use that soon, I'm resorting to heated dog water bowls(you can get good deals on large ones quite often) I'm working on the coop next week to start winter proofing the best I can.

I plan to move the roosts a bit away from the walls. I noticed the hens heads are pretty close to the roof. We have a 5 gallon bucket with horizontal nipples. A stock tank heater prevented freezing last winter. And we had extended periods of near/ below 0° F. I also put up some clear plastic on the sides of the run. That kept the snow out. My coop article has pictures.

Depending on what breeds you have the cold shouldn't be an issue. I to am in Indiana and I the past we have had temps way below zero with wind chills -20 and colder. My hens have always done fine and that is with the Windows in the coop still open. Lack of ventilation will cause more problems then the cold. Some people buy the clear plastic shower curtains to make wind blocks for the run.
