Wire Size Question

Pullet & cockerel pen complete w/ future egg layer boxes. I looked at purchasing ½” welded wire but I found it much more economical to go with 2” x 4” welded wire & staggering/doubling it instead. I think it is pretty much predator proof for varmints we have around here. Please let me know your thoughts.

I see chicken wire at ground level in your #7173 -- I would replace that chicken wire with hardware cloth ASAP even though you also have the welded wire too. I realize that sounds picky- but there are many things that can make it through that (physically squeeze through) that will have no problem ripping up the chicken wire.

Also- I notice you've got some overgrowth by the outside corner of your backyard that backs up to the chicken area- I would trim that back if not eliminate it. That's like a cover oasis for things that would love to hide until dark and search for the weak point. Most rodent type critters like to have things on two sides of their body- that's why rodents usually follow fence lines or walls. They prefer 3 things. If you make a gap between those bushes and your wall, it creates a space where vermin are most vulnerable to THEIR predators, and the wider the open space, the less comfortable.

Agree with replacing the chicken wire on the coop to the left with hard wire. There is none in the new coop to the right.

No on eliminating overgrowth. It took me a long time to get that native vegitation. I'd rather eliminate the threat at the pens.

I have a question; I read a lot of posts about folks saying animals such as raccoons can rip right through chicken wire which I do not dispute. My question is, if you already have 2” x 4” hard wire in addition to chicken wire why add more hard wire? I don’t know of any chicken that is going to stay next to a fence while a raccoon rips it apart piece by piece, & any animal that can rip through chicken wire certainly can’t fit through a 2” x 4” hard wire opening, it would be too large, like a raccoon. I have chicken wire in some coops not to keep predators out but to keep scavengers like hosps away from the chicken feed. It just seems to me that a lot of folks are going through an awful lot of expense without justification. Please explain.
