Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Afternoon all!!

Great pics dk! I love the "flutterbys" and that Queen Ann's Lace is amazing! Reminds me of snow!

Ok, so I and DK will be the decisive peeps and pick the date: October 1st it is! This way if the 1st is booked for your venue we have another date to use! Now, where to go?

I too like Dane County since it appears to be in the middle of Southern WI. Any thoughts? Do we even have an appointed site picker?

Afternoon All... thanks for the thoughts about the sterile green peppers. After some more research, I think you hit the nail on the head TO about to much Nitrogen. Sounds like that is the culprit. They are planted next to the tomatoes, and like I said the plants are huge, however all the growth went into the plants instead of the fruit....silly peppers. Might just pull em and plant something else that has time to mature.

Nice pics thanks for sharing.

Time to get the building hat on Jim! I need more housing too!

Hi, I am a bit lazy today.. Annie bought a case of heavy motor oil for the tractor.. I have to add often because I have bad rings..
I am waiting for late afternoon to go pull some more roots.. after 4PM the shadows start to fall across the garden..

Brent.. don't pull those peppers quite yet.. what I would try, haven't a clue if it would worrk, is just pull up on them a little bit to break a few roots.. the stress might trigger some blossoms.. what does it hurt to try ?? I read about this procedure a long time ago,, but I don't remember even what kind of plant it was done to..

another thing that might work, and again, I am not sure what to use... decaying material needs nitrogen .. if you could mulch with something that would decay and use up some of that nitrogen..
the first thing that pops into my head is fish guts.. ?? or green grass...??

Elaine, my Mom used to put grape leaves in her pickles.. IDK..?
Annie says some people use alum.. maybe there is some connection between grape leaves and alum ? acidity ?

I know it helps to use less ripened cukes..

LOL ain't I just a bunch of useless knowledge today ?

the no show called at 1PM today .. said she could come for the chickens.. she is not here yet..

I transferred 24 keets to the quail pen.. lots more room in there and better air circulation.. I have a big box fan going..

Tuesday is butchering day,, if it is not raining.. That will free up one cage.. I would like to keep the peachick in the house so we can handle him daily.. he is quite tame already.. I don't think Annie would like that,, though...

The goose finally quit her nest.. she hatched one duckling. and promptly lost it overnight.. not real good production for over 8 or 10 weeks of setting.. she is no dummy,, it kept the gander off her back... LOL

You guys got me looking.... and found out that grape leaves were added to pickles to keep them crisp; they prohibit the enzymes found on the blossom end of the pickle from making the pickles soft.... so you can just cut off the blossom ends instead.

I pitted 4 of the 6 bags of cherries today, with the handy-dandy pitter Fleet Farm sells (best $20 spent EVER). I made 4 more quarts of vodka cherries and added almond extract this time......

I have two boxes of peaches that require attention in the next day or so, I'll be happy to get those suckers in the freezer, it is so nice to have a taste of summertime during those cold winter months!

I managed to get some pics of a few planes flying overhead on Saturday: and that AF jet that had the hard landing had JUST flown over my place of employment before the malfunction...... anyway, pics...

And the cherries....

And the park, down by the lake.... I thought this was a good shot.

Since I had all those fresh cherries out, I made a cherry cobbler. YUMMY!!!!!

And here comes the rain AGAIN! I wish I could have hit some of those fruit tree/bush deals! I also wish I had someplace to put them!

evening all, just getting home and getting chores done, was on the hot side today, had to go and get a unit ready today- the current tenants just moved out and the new ones are moving in tomorrow- this is a little faster than we like to do things but seemed to work out okay-had 4 adults and 4 kids working on it and the ones leaving did have it cleaned to a degree. We have a total of 6 to get ready this month- with 4 needing to be done by mid Aug-1 down 3 to go.....

had to clean the hen pen when we got home as they needed it.

a bit of paper work to do and then to bed as we start bright and early tomorrow.

we have 3 baby chicks moved to the brooder, 3 of the eggs stopped somewhere between day 10 to day 15 but we have 1 last egg whose has pipped and working on getting out-it's due date was this coming Tuesday but guess it wanted out!!

I have written Oct 1st down as the Southern meet and greet!

Hi again! Got the fence done for the torts, the potatoes planted (finally) and some of the garden weeded. I am pooped! I picked some cukes today! Got about a half dozen and one that was shaped like a snowman that DD ate. I also picked some peppers (sorry Jim) and a few beans. THe potatoes are flowering (the volunteer ones) and the beans are too. SHould be having a bunch soon!
BigZ I dont think there is anything you can do to get the nitrogen lower in your garden soil to help the peppers...try Jim's odd trick--never know, it might work! Just dont pull TOO hard.
The new tortoise is a smart one! She went into the house on her own tonight...just like chickens...well, most of the anyhow!
I think I need to make some popcorn...I have a craving...good night! Terri O

Babylady4, thanks for the pictures. I would have liked to have been in that water today. Man those cherries look good! Is the cherry pitter you got from Farm & Fleet the one that pits 4 at a time? (It's the only one on their website.) I picked cherries for an hour a couple of weeks ago and spent 2 1/2 hours pitting them as I only have a single pitter. I need to decide what kind to buy and will be adding it to my "wish list". If any of you have a particular type of cherry pitter you really like, please let me know as I'm open to all recommendations... guess I'll go do a little internet research on them now while I'm thinking about it.

'Nite, all!
Elaine

evening, the cherry pitter we have is from F&F.. It is a plastic one with a suction base. it has a hopper that holds about a half cup of cherries.. you pump the handle and the cherries feed automatically and drop into a bowl automatically after they are pitted.. You have to kind of fiddle with the cherries in the hopper to get them to slide into place sometimes.. the trick is to not overfill the hopper.. then the cherries don't "log jam"..
I think it is the same one that BL4 uses. about $20 at F&F..

I worked on pulling roots for about an hour.. got quite a few out.
had the tractor on two wheels ,, thought I was going over.. the back blade caught on a root/stump and I did not know it.. I don't have to go to no carnival for a thrilling ride.. LOL

It got too hot to continue so I headed home for some cold lemonade.. the ground was too wet to do a decent job of grading etc.. the sod wouldn't break up like it does when it is dry.. tomorrow I will take the back blade off and put the drag on.. then we will see that sod come apart..

the no-show did show today.. she bought 6 americana.. brought a tiny cat carrier.. I told her to go right straight home.. she lives only 5 or 10 minutes away.. I let her catch the ones she wanted.. she tried to get all pullets.. I really don't now how she could tell..

I noticed one in the pen with a crossed beak.. it will be joining the roosters on tuesday morning.. have a 12 week old poult with a twisted leg.. also going to freezer camp..

had to use the water hose to chase 2 guineas out of the pine tree tonight.. they are learning,, they came right down this time.LOL

I told Annie about someone making a concord grape pie.. she said she also has a recipe.. sure enough,, she did.. It sounds ike a bit of work, but she said she would do it.. who am I to say, "NO" ?

she has a recipe for everything !!!! she rips pages out of magazines in waiting rooms.. I pretend I don't know her.. LOL
