Good to know. One of my Jaerhon hens likes to sleep in the nest box, I usually put her on the perch. They are in a breeding pen, but I've been letting them range now that he's the only roo.
The one glued to the golf ball is with the laying flock. And there is an Ancona sitting in the brush on 13 eggs. What the cluck?!? All this broodiness!

Good evening! The people are back...

Thank God that she is going back to college on Monday! She(dd19) is making a sandwich and they(dd25 and DH are teasing me about nearly hitting a cow on the way to Watertown!! Cripes...I think it belonged to one of my 4Hers! Thank G they didnt hit it!

I have a ton of stuff "brewing" for canning tomorrow. Pickled peppers, DrH's pickles, some bread and butter pickles and I got a crock of crock pickles going too!~I hope they dont get slimy like last year! I am trying them in the basement for a cooler temp. I think last year I did them in the kitchen and we had 90 degree temps and they spoiled.
Hey DrH...the pickles I made per your directions ALL popped their seals!!!
ep.gif
So I tasted them and I think I made crock pickles right there on the kitchen table! The brine was a bit cloudy but they were not slimy in the least So, what I did was to repack them and add new brine and then process them. Now they are all sealed and I am looking forward to sampling them in a few weeks!

I think I will cook up something for dinner...probably eggplant, zucchini and tomatoes...it is what I have been eating for nearly a week already! Oh yeah, I made that GF banana bread and the fam is eating it all up! I guess it must be "good enough." I was hoping to freeze portions for snacks in the coming weeks...oh well, guess I will have to make more! (I think I cant wait until Monday!)

Good night all! Sweet dreams! TErri O

(PS) Carol--the standard says that the Jaerhons are "non broody" types...guess they didnt read the manual hey?

Got a Jaerhon chick

Think it might be a girl, has a big light yellow spot on its head, very noticable even when its still wet. That little thing is peeping like mad. Hmm, hope the bedroom fan can drown out the noise, there's gonna be more shortly. At least 4 more pips. Just like human babies, born in the wee hours.

Ugg, must stop posting pics of cute farm critters! I worked at a camp up north for a couple years, they had 44 horses and 14 burros. They are fun little things.

Woot, congrats on your hatch too Hurley!

Sure like having the game on in the background, baking cookies during the breaks; many a good memory of autumn football days, 'eh Bigz?

Congrats on all the new hatches Amy and Hurley !!

Check this out !!! http://northernwi.craigslist.org/grd/2544013920.html Another barn !!!!! They want you to take it down and pay them $2,000. Betcha it would cost them a heck of alot more to pay someone to remove it for them !!!!

And another one that's free: http://greenbay.craigslist.org/zip/2538371490.html I can't believe how many barns people want removed from their property !!! I'd give my eye teeth for one of these !!! Wish I had the means and money to take them all............ I have 20 spare acres I could put them on !!!

Wow,

I was just thinking about calling it a night and I heard this hight pitched sound coming from outside. Of course my Great Pyrenees are both barking up a storm like they do every night but on top of that I heard what sounded like a siren at first. Then I realied it is either a coyote or wolf or ???????? Never heard it so close to the house before.

Sure hope all the birds are in. Don't think the guineas are spending much time inside these days but I don't think the coyotes get them, thinking more owls or ?????

Sure hope I can get to sleep now !!!!

Material needed :
a newly hatched chick.. one or 2 days old.. the newer the better..
a popsicle stick (spacer between the legs)
a strip of duct tape, 3/8" wide by 2 inches long,

cut the popsicle stick so it is a piece about as long as it is wide..

lay the wood on the tape about 1 inch from the end.

hold the chick in your hand upside down with the tail end facing away from you..

place the wood next to the inside of the shank of the lower leg and wrap the 1" piece of tape around the leg and attach it to the wood..

now bring the second leg to the edge of the wood and wrap the tape around the leg and to the piece of wood.. continue wrapping the tape around both legs until it is all used up..

make sure that you have the legs even and the feet facing in the down position..

lay the chick in a warm brooder on it's side.. It will eventually right itself and learn to hop on both feet to get around.. the more it struggles the better..after about 24 hours, carefully remove the tape.

do not feel sorry for it and hold it.. just leave it on it's own.. do not watch it, this is a slow process and there is nothing to see..

don't worry about food or water.. at this young age it will survive..

However,,I have had chicks learn to eat and drink hobbled like this..

But if a chick falls into the water, he could drown..
