Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning everyone0! So sad about Cadbury Dooner! Loosing a friend is not fun! Is that the SLW that you got from Jerry? Weird that she quit laying...I wonder if it is the wyandotte breed though; didnt DrH say that his havent been laying either? I dont know if mine does or not...she is pretty bare though, I think she is a favorite of the "gentlemen" that arent so gentle!

DrH--it does take a while to get used to a laptop--even from machine to machine--I find it really hard to type on a regular keyboard now! You have too much to do to be on the puter anyhow! Get to it man!

I would have you post your recipe for pickled fish...but I still have not gone fishing so I guess I wont be needing it.
Cind...how many babies??? You should jut let her on all the eggs until she decides to take the babies off...sometimes there is a late one in there. THey must be able to hear them in the shell cause they seem to get them all hatched! I hope you have lots. What mix are they? New Turk is really getting big! I still dont know if it is a pullet or roo...he is keeping it a secret for now.
Jim--what are your plans for your quail? Did you ever get the plucker right to work for them? ANd how come you dont hunt any more? Too lazy, too busy or too old?

AACK--couldnt resist; Ya know I love my "old guys!"
Elaine--I guess you are the drying queen for our group! I used to dry lots of stuff--had one of those "The Big One" dryers that had trays to stack way up to the ceiling. I didnt really like it--took too long. I actually was looking at the Nesco one at F&F yesterday...kinda pricey.

My neck is killing me today...I think I need to go to the chiro and see if I can get it fixed. Cant hardly turn my head! Really need to make applesauce soon...maybe tomorrow. 4H meeting tonight--I heard that we lost another member yesterday...not too sad, she was a pain in the a$$. Her Dad was nice though--but scatterbrained! We are picking up a new member though so it's a wash.
I lost a little quail last night. I put the new feeder in there in hopes of saving on waste and it got into it and couldnt get out! There was another one that was stuck in the jar part but it was OK. I took the jar off to see if that will work. They dont have any bedding any more...just spilled feed!
Two of my dogs have decided that it's OK to play together. They are wrestling on the kitchen floor making a ton of noise! I am glad cause one of them was just laying around all the time. She used to play with Sarge (my stock dog) when he was alive...maybe she is finally over him? (wish I was...best dog ever) Now they are playing tug with a toy. I am glad!
Guess I better get moving...have a few clients this afternoon...

Oh yeah...the weekend of Oct 8 is out for me to meet. I am doing pony rides at an event...(carol you need to read closer!

)I asked if you wanted to help remember? It's in Fitchburg--for the shelter. Later on in the month is fine for me too. It would be good on the 15th when FT comes down...then I can get the Dom Roo! We could all just meet up then for an informal thing...like in a parking lot?

Doubt they'll let us have a fire for Deb though....

Have a fantastic day! Terri O

(PS) CC--what I meant about his eyes are that they are bay instead of the dark brown that Austalorpes are supposed to have. I figure his mom was a BA but maybe the Dad was not my champion BA? I have no idea...just that his eyes are the wrong color!

Dooner, sorry to hear you lost your old friend. It's hard, even when they've lived a long, happy life. We give them what we can when they're here!

FT, I've dried just about eveything. Apple slices are nice, and I do mine without soaking them in anything, as some "experts" will tell you to do. Tomatoes dry well, although I've taken to freezing them on trays in the freezer before bagging them so they're easy to use in stews and sauces. We have done bananas and Italian plums lately as well.

I've got two feedbuckets filled with apples that I have to do something with tonight. Most of them need bad spots cut out, so I think I'll be busy.

Hope everyone's having a good day!

It is still up in the air about the Dancing horses. My sister has been really sick so hasn't felt like talking. She sounds terrible. I will try to pin her down with a time. Go ahead and you guys do what all works out for you. If it happens to be on the 15th and I'm not tied up

I can try to make it. Does the park you're thinking about have an indoor building ?

From what I have discovered, a building in a park requires a rental fee, and they aren't cheap, at least around here.
The 2 parks we have considered both have a fee to get into the park. I don't know if this is a problem with anyone?
Aztalan is a state park and has an admission fee of $7, unless you already have an annual sticker.
Mukwonago Co. Park has an admission fee of $5, but I am not even sure there will be anyone there to collect it or not. They have a drop box on the honor system. They have shelters in the picnic areas, and they also have camping areas further back off the road which do not have shelters, but they do have fire pits.
Camping: Come to the park during the day and stay the night at either the 6 reserved group camp sites or pop your tent at one of the 30 sites in the first come, first serve family camping area. Picnic tables, a firepit and outdoor restrooms are available.
They also have a heated building for rent, but the price is outrageous & doesn't start until Nov.:
Building Rentals: Reservation Request
The recreation center can be rented for day and overnight use in the off season (Nov. - Mar.) This heated facility has refrigerator, stove, soda machine, hot and cold water, sink, electricity, indoor restrooms, 6 - 6 foot tables and 40 chairs. Capacity 50/25 overnight.

So if anyone knows of a park that we could meet at that doesn't require a fee, (is there such a thing anymore?) then please let us know.
And as for the date, does anyone have a problem with Oct. 15th?

TO... Too bad about the baby quail.... Man they must be tiny to be able to get into the jar!

We have 5 babies!!!! Started with 11 eggs, 3 disappeared

My flock is very mixed! Some are mutts already so I guess we'll just wait and see what they turn into.

Pie crust:

2 cups flour
1 cup shortening
1 rounded tablespoon sugar

Mix and cut to pea size crumbs.
Sprinkle 2 tablespoons Ice water over it. Gently mix with hand and round into ball. Divide in 2 flatten into discs and chill for 1/2 hour or more.
This is a very delicate crust so it recommended to roll on a pastry cloth or mat. I spray the work surface with Pam, sprinkle with flour and a little sugar. The sugar helps keep the flour from clumping. Gently roll so it's 1/2 of what you want it. Flip and finish rolling.
Makes 2 crusts
Easy, but the trick is not to handle it too much. The more you handle and roll it the tougher it gets. You can also add a pinch of nutmeg or other spice when mixing.

I'll be back later!

good afternoon, I just finished cleaning up the kitchen.. I canned 25 quarts of tomatoes this afternoon.. with the previous 25 quarts makes 50.. 10 more than Annie requested, but daughter #2 will steal several during the year..

I am going to go through Annie's catsup recipes tonight.. We have no cats to fall into the kettle this time..

I am hungry.. I did not take time to eat breakfast or lunch.. I am warming up a pizza, later.. (soon)

Annie moved the quail TV to the basement.. there are 53 of the little ones..

TO , I am planning on processing some of them.. No I did not modify the plucker yet.. I still have 8 weeks to do that..
why do today what you can put off until tomorrow ??

TO, I quit hunting because I am going blind.. My right eye is just about gone.. I cannot drive at night any more.. restricted license.. active as of 9-11-11... glaucoma is prevelant on my Mom's side of the family.. I must have picked up the gene..
and yes, I am too lazy, also..

FT, how did you women get back up to 50 in just 3 pages ? 8 posts per page is 24 plus the 5 should be only 29 ..
using chicken math ? LOL

No salt in the crust ?

TO, did you get those feeders with the 6 holes all around with the fruit jar for a hopper ? I use them also, only without the jar at first.. they look like little aliens climbing in and out of those holes in their UFO.. the bigger chicks llike to use the top for a nest..

we have a waterer with the jar also.. we put rocks in the dish to keep the buggars from drowning..
