Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Long Island Cheese pumpkin: very popular for pies. Flat, slightly ribbed fuit look like wheels of cheese, with buff colored skin. A very good keeper, of excellent quaility, 6-10 lbs each; a beautiful heirloom variety. -Baker Creek Seeds

good morning, DrH must still be out tracking that deer..LOL
The first thing Annie said to me today was about deer.. She said that in order to create freezer space, she was thinking of asking some people we know to can some venison for us for halves.. I am not too keen on that idea.. I am leary about canned food.. I told her that I would can it.. then I know it is done right..

I could get into canning guineas, I think.. we use them for soup, so canning them would make good sense..

Last night Annie did a skip count of the birds as she shut the doors.. without the 64 quails,, she figures we have about 180 assorted fowl to feed..

I have to do some serious chicken math/subtracting.. there are always reports that so many people don't have enough to eat.. I wonder if I ran an ad if i could find just one family willing to help with the butchering for half the bounty, if I would get any takers.. ??

we freeze a lot here.. we have 5 freezers full.. we also have 2 refrigerators in the kitchen and those freezer compartments are full also... Yesterday, Annie mentioned that we should order a side of beef !! we still have most of the last one .. I think/hope she meant "in the future"..

Good Morning Everybody! Well sort of. We never found that buck we had 4 well experienced hunters looking. I've busted a lot of brush in my life but that was far and away the worst for that length of time. We only found 3 places with blood all about 50 yards apart. Turns out that it wasn't hit as good as first thought. Most of the arrow was sticking out of the shoulder when last seen. Tells me that it was stuck in the shoulder blade. BFF said it jumped the string. Just hope he still lives! Cind we all hate to waste anything that's one of the reasons I don't care for bow hunting, love the time in the woods but don't like the wasted meat. BFF called last night that he got a doe behind his place so I'll be back over there helping cut it up tomorrow.

This is really cutting into my sittin around time.

Amy sounds like your friend is really busted up. Nothing but possitive vibes going his way. I've been slingin a saw for around 40 years and only had one minor incident. The danger is inherent and always present. Must be doing something right but it's always a possibilty. Thanks for all of the concern! Feel like going back to bed all that time bustin brush really did me in. We went for Tbones and taters at the DD's and her beau last night and got the veni canned, sure smelled good coming out of the canner. Foggy here this morning better go let the kids out to play.

Good morning all! There are too many people in this house and it is making me crazy...they are talking and arguing...just being annoying. It took forever to read all the messages this morning and I cant remember what I read...

AND I have a headache...this might be short!

Jim--that is a good idea about the butchering. You might get a taker or two. If I didnt have so many to do right here, Heck, I might even come over! That would be a lucky family for sure! You guys must do a lot of cooking to have that many freezers in use. We were discussing emptying one of ours because of not making so many meals any more. OF course about the time you do that you need it again!
Oh yeah--about heirlooms. I think that is why they have developed hybrids; to get rid of the lumpy, bumpy stuff...easier to do machine harvesting and cleaning...but they sacrificed the flavor in doing so. The worst of the tomatoes in my garden this year are the "Mortage Lifter" very lined and sometimes there is a whole part that is still green fused right to a part that is perfectly ripe! THe best are "Abe Lincoln" they are small but perfectly round and very prolific.
I like your idea about freezing them gradually and then making them into sauce later Cind! I have frozen them like that and then just used them that way for soups etc. THat was the year I was out of time and jars...speaking of jars: I used to save the mayonnaise jars too but after having one too many lose the bottom while lifting it out of the canner I gave up on that. I have been hitting St Vinnies to get jars for 30 cents each but there has been slim pickin's there too. The ones at F&F were $12 for 12! But then you get rings and lids too...you sure dont can to save any $$ that is for sure! (but the food sure is better!)

I better get outside and take care of the critters. Jim ya got me to thinking that I should count my birds and see how many I have...I will prolly come up with the same number as you...how weird would that be? LOL--have a fantastic day everyone...Terri O

(PS) FT, you and Cind are made for each other with your late night (and early morning) hours!

We have some really stupid duck hunters down here today. They're swearing up a storm, their dumb dog keeps barking, and the morons were shooting towards my FIL. They thought his decoys were real ducks! Then a hen mallard flew by. My FIL let it pass, they shot it off the water! They're lucky my FIL is hunting down there or I would be enjoying a nice day of kayaking. They better find a new spot tomorrow because I will be scaring ducks with my bright blue kayak. Maybe I'll wear blaze orange too. And fly a hawk kite behind me. Lol!

Cind, I've done similar with frozen tomatoes, but I had let mine sit in the bag to thaw for a little while until the skins were thawed & just squeezed them out of the skins. Super easy. But I don't have 5 freezers like someone we know, so I usually can my maters.

And why the heck would you let a radish get to be 6 feet tall anyway, Jimbo?
Lumpy, bumpy tomatoes? Sounds like chicken food to me.
Cind, like Jim, I have around a hundred or so jars, and have access to more. All my aunts used to can but don't anymore, so they are always asking if I want more. Of course now that I said something, they probably got rid of them all.

You be careful with those hunters around. Although you made me laugh with your sweet sentiments for them.

This reminds me of a time I had my dog for a walk down by a pond and was taking pictures. All was peaceful and I had taken some beautiful pictures of some canadian geese. When I got my film developed the pictures were lovely. Then I got this funny feeling in my stomache about some of the pictures. I stared at them for quite a while and found a faint outline of some men in camo on the other bank. You could hardly make them out. It was amazing how invisible they were to me with the naked eye. And sooooo quiet. Yet so disturbing because i thought I was alone and yet I had 'watchers' .

Cindlady what a wonderful idea to save scraps for your chickens through the winter. Who would have thunk it? ! I need to see pics of your fuzzy butts!
