Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good evening, I did not get the second egg tray finished.. tomorrow will be soon enough.. I was threading a 3/16 rod,(the last one of 6) and the threads broke off in the die.. I drilled a 1/1 6 hole through the metal, but don't have an easy out small enough.. tried a larger drill bit and broke it.. I was working on it with a paring knife and slipped and gashed my thumb.. they cost only 2 bucks, It cost me more for the drill bits than the die was worth.. I should have just thrown it away..but i just only bought it today special for this particular job.. oh well, maybe tomorrow will be a better day..

the guy showed up right on time and took two turkey poults.. wasn't too concerned about their sex.. wanted hens, but said if they were toms he knew where he could get more.. that's the kind of customer I like..

TerriO you should write a cook book:
"How To Make Anything Without The Proper Ingredients"..
You could start every recipe out:
"Send Hubby to the Store"..

I have a clam shell type trailer out back.. I had forgotten what is in it.. I flipped up the lid and it is full of oak firewood !! I am all set for working in the shop for awhile..

Just shaking my head !!! You're bad Jim !! lol
Also learned the hard way with a bruised shoulder !!! Sure miss skeet shooting !!!
hit.gif
Saw a pink red rider at TSC today !!! I want a B gun, don't get recoil from that !!! I like shooting cds with BB's
Oh yes !!! Slow Gin !!!! I remember having my friends pull over so I coud get rid of it.
sickbyc.gif
I was riding along with two guy friends doing a Milw Journal paper route ( Yeah I know but the driver wasn't drinking) we ran out of OJ and the rest is history. Come to think of it I think I got rid of it in the curb in front of the house when they dropped me off !!!! That's some powerful stuff when you drink it straight !!! Plus I weighed 70lbs less ( Wow now I'm depressed !!!
hit.gif
)
Anyway, drove to Pound Today to get the deer processed. They have 1000 deer to process so far !!! I'll tell ya what, if I would have know I was going to be treated so poorly I wouldn't have gone all that way. I'll hightlight tomorrow since I"m running behind, trying to get to bed early. My Paint Rooster might get here in the Am or Weds. Poor guy is in the mail, Chick is in the mail !!!
gig.gif

Anyway, I saw a shavings place next to the butcher so I stopped in. They charge $8.00 a cubic yard for poplar and pine shavings. Not a bad price but a bit to far to drive I think unless had someplace else to go.
Decided to had to TSC in Shawno while I was on the road. I picked up some more goat food on clearance and they had pond fish food on clearance, 32% protein. Was marked down to $9 a bag, I asked if I bought all four bags if they would mark it down any more. Yep got it for $7 a bag. I will mix it with my scratch grain to boost the protein.
Bought two more 20lb bags of horse cookies, they were three bucks off per bag !!
Then decide to stop in to sign the Recall Walker petition, was there for over an hour. Met the neatest people. One woman was sitting their making earrings. She asked if I wanted a pair of earrings, I asked how much, she said, just take a pair !!! Wow, nice Democrat she is !!!!! Wonder if a Republican would have given me a pair ????
gig.gif
Or maybe they would have ripped the ones I was wearing out of my ears ??
gig.gif

Just kidding guys, don't mean to stir up any bad feelings as far as politics go !! Also if anyone (WCC and TO) the other woman there is looking to rehome a 6 yr old registered arabian mare, I think green broke or broke. Would like to get $250 for it. She (the woman) can't ride any longer due to a car accident. She is going to send me pictures, guess it is a bay.

So on top of waiting for my paint rooster to arrive at the PO I have to bring the truck to Antigo to get new tires tomorrow. Buy three get one free deal. Can't believe I talked with three different people at two different Fand F and got three different recommendations for tires. So I'm getting a C rated tire. More heavy duty then the standard recommended tire. Cooper AT3 ????
Sure wish I could remember what I learned in "Lady's Know your Car" class and "Understanding Your Auto" and "TuneUp 1" I took in my twenties !!! Probabl wouldn't take me long to recolect (sp), and I could probably work there !!!! They should have to take a test to work at some of these places.

On top of everything else, I can't find my cel phone and our land line goes into static when you call it from another phone, lucky if it rings once !!!! Wonder if falling into my coffee cup has anything to do with it ???? Now how is the PO gonna get ahold of me ??? I have to get up early and call them !!!
Never a dull moment that is for sure. SSDD !!!!
Oh and TO what size is your cookie tin? Gotta picture? The hog pan I am thinking of using for the water heater is at least 3-4 inches high. My brother is a sheet metal worker and If I bring him down the pans this weekend when I go down he will make me some covers and I will pick them up next week when I go back to Racine and Madison.
I plan on using the candle shaped lightbulbs. 40 and 60 watts. I got them for $.47 for a package of 2 at Maynards !!

Catch ya all later

Hi All!

TO...Just a night person... don't get up 'till noon unless I have to.

Those plecostomus grow like weeds the first few years! Had a few that got real big. One I think we had for over 10 years! I would take him to put with the turtle but long way to go.
idunno.gif

BBP.... could be the size of the tank.... and they are territorial.

MLH... Very cute cats! I think in all my life I only intentionally got 1 cat.... in '74, the ex and I moved into an old farm house. All the other cats and dogs came to us in one way or another.

Jim... Sorry your project pooped out.... cool you found the wood!

I like that! Sorry it didn't go well with the butcher.... this time of year they have very, very long hours and tend to get testy.

I know, I had 2 of my kids work for a meat processor over deer season for a few years! BTW.... I did papers for 12 years!

I never got sick or overly drunk untill I was in my late 40's! ( Not that I didn't try!

) Got done in on 40 yr old Bourbon
DH brought home more apples so I got 10 more bags in the freezer for pies.
Thinking as soon as Lacey's kids are a bit bigger I'll put them in the big coop and move the roosters I want to keep in the small coop. Got to butcher those other ones! The girls need a break!

Well, guess it's morning! Night All!

Good Morning Everyone! Jim don't cha just hate it when your stupid fingers get in the way of your progress? You forgot to add seat belt hubby in and send him to the store. Oh wait maybe there aren't any seatbelts left in it.

I learned a long time ago to take veni in for sausage in the off season, that way you get your own meat back. Rep would have ripped them out of your ears then sold them back to you
lau.gif
MLH I hate kittens! I always want to take them home! shanti glad to hear your son is making a comeback! Bigz always a good feeling to KNOW you have enough to get you through! There's 5 blocks left to split out back then I think I'm done for now. Don't think I'll be piling up that much wood to split for a long time, it gets pretty old day in and day out. Think there's 9-10 face cord drying for next year.

It's a good start! Scored some half gallon glass jars yesterday. Will be good for fridge pickles or pickled northern. I want to do one more good clean out of the coop soon before winter sets in. Need to get some more straw first.

good morning, I hate it when I first start typing in this box and the letters hesitate.. it goes on like this for awhile and then the box jumps and things go into real time.. hasn't happened yet..

I have 5 eggs waiting to go into the bator..

the egg tray project was one of those that should have taken only about an hour.. but I had one glitch after another before I could even get started.. that takes a lot of fun out of it..

coffee should be done by now.. I will check in later after a few others have posted..

Sandi, do you think you will get your own meat back ?
I don't trust those butcher shops.. I take real good care of my deer before cutting it up.. I don't want any part of a deer that looked like it was gutted out with a broken bottle, or as I have seen, dragged through a long deep muddy puddle with an ATV.
the deer actually went out of sight in that murky water. It was not someone from our group.. We all just stood there and watched like: OH GROSS !!!! Once it is shot , it should be treated like food you are going to eat...

..........jiminwisc........

yup DrH,, I was thinking, If I keep doing what I am doing with this knife and it slips, I am going to get cut.. I just had to prove myself right..

we take our sausage meat in after June.. Some butchers don't like that, but we take a LOT of meat in to make it worth their while.. and guess what,, I don't care if they don't llike it..

I am thinking of grabbing a scoop of the fresh wood ships and putting them into the two coops with concrete floors..I don't think they will absorb any water, but at least the water will stay under the chips on the floor and I won't have to walk in it..

Actually, regarding the bird seed-Im just using a small handful in with the BOSS (another handful-so ending up with 3/4 mason jar of sprouts every 3 days for treats) to sprout-should I still stop doing that? And yes my big fluffy black orpington is a tub lol-adorable. When picking her up, shes pretty heavy. I'm just surprised there wasn't a scaling back with the egg production. It went from one or two a day (two laying hens) to nothing for the past 5 days.

I have about 10-11 pullets that will mature to laying age about Dec/Jan-does this mean they won't start laying until later? If so, when do the daylight hours lengthen enough for them to start laying-March? I've read the pros/cons of lighting in the coop to lengthen daylight-I guess my thought is; if I wait and let nature take its course, in the long run, they will produce for more years-and be healthier-correct?

Thanks for the tips/input!!!

Good morning! Gray, gray, go away....I need sunshine to make my day! I am chanting this....yes Jim the letters on my puter do that once in a while too...I have to stop looking at them while I type or it messes me up! I wonder what makes it do that? Somebody Google it please?
gig.gif
Also, this made me laugh!
the fresh wood ships and putting them into the.................I don't think they will absorb any water

I didnt think fresh nor old ships were supposed to absorb water...but I am no seaman! LOL! Ahhh Jim,
hugs.gif
! Sorry about your thumb! I bet it is right in a bad spot too and it will bother you in everything you attempt until it heals! Dam^ fingers always get in the way dont they? I am surprised the blood didnt lube up the stuck rod and set it free!
The place where I took my deer guarantees your own meat back. He is a small operation and said he does about 700 a year. When I put mine in the cooler there was only 1 other one. He wont make sausage for you unless you have at least 15# of meat. (I had 27!) I think his price is higher for sausage though...I know the other processor has 2 prices...one with your own meat and then one with "batch meat." That must be the stuff that is drug through the mud eh? THose guys prolly would RATHER not get their own meat back!
DrH--I think you are set for a little while on the wood! My farrier has NINETY cords stocked up!!! me:
ep.gif
You:
droolin.gif
He sells wood though; and heats his and his Mom's house with it...
Cind--really, if you want him to put in with your turtle that would be fine! Does it live in your house? When we had our sliders in here they sure can dirty a tank quick! We had to build a pond to accommodate them...speaking of....I think there is still one out there...better get her caught and returned to the lake to winter over! THe last time the sun was out I was surprised to see one still in there!
FT--Cant you call your cell from you land line to find it? That is how we always found ours...I kinda miss the land line--that is all we ever used it for! I am always misplacing my cell phone...I think that is why they put cords on them in the first place--to keep track of them! I dont even wonder how you dropped yours in a cuppa...makes me laugh to think of it...sorry!
hide.gif
I hope your roo is OK in the mail...we will be wanting pics of him after he settles in ya know! My cookie tin is one of those Danish tins--oh wait...there is the camera, I will just take a pic.

All I had for reference (that I could grab easily) was a 2C glass measure. You can see how deep it is. This is what I go for because I can use the HD bulbs in them and they usually last all season. I didnt have a lot of luck with the candelabra ones...easily broken and didnt give off a whole lot of heat.
Of course I had to take a pic of the new TV! (you can use the cats for a reference on that one!

Did I mention that I really want my kitchen table back?
Now this is really TRUE!
TerriO you should write a cook book:
"How To Make Anything Without The Proper Ingredients"..

I know I could do it too! Between cooking here and cooking at the retirement center (where the "shopper" doesnt think you really need mushrooms for Mushroom Chili) I would have lots of stories to tell along with recipes "Lime and Turkey Soup with Chilies" (no lime or chilies needed) Unless you have a husband willing.....
lau.gif

MLH and AngieB--I think it is OK to feed what A is giving her hens...you said that you SPROUTED the bird seed right? I would think that the addition of the chlorophyll in the sprouted grains would negate some of the "bad" you might get from feeding birdseed (if there is any bad) I am thinking that light is what your problem is. THere are a few hens in my barn that free range 24/7 and they lay once or twice a week. THey are Production Reds too so really should lay every day if they had light...I guess they are too "production oriented" to stop totally! It sounded like you knew about the light thing but dont use it? And MLH...do your rabbits lay? Is that why you are giving them light?
idunno.gif
Why do they need it? My DD25 wants me to bring ours inside now that she heard yours are in with your chickens...I think my roos might kill them?
My coffee is empty and I think you all are probably sick of reading my rambling so...guess I will get going on my work around here. Day off so I work much harder! Have a fantastic day! Terri O

(PS) Just thought of another thing! I told you all about the turkey that is sitting again? Well one of her eggs was broken in on the side the other day so I took it and opened it...there was a little turkey inside! Lots of good veins and the embryo was about 3" long...2 more weeks probably...they just might hatch! Now THAT would be an odd! She sat all summer and couldnt hatch a thing....now?

Hi again, I just turned the computer on to find out what the date is.. I needed to lable the eggs.. I got the second tray finished this morning and transferred the eggs from tray #1 to #2.. I am going to modify #1 a little more.. I have the tray full, 28 eggs.. I still have one egg waiting to go in,, so I better get this tray modified soon..

I keep lights on in the coop 24/7.. they are the lights in the brooder cages.. Most chickens are not much good for eggs after 2 or 3 seasons, light or no light.. people who say it stresses the chickens, should come here and pick out my stressed out ones.. I guess I don't know what a stressed out chicken acts like.. but I have some of the most layed back red-neck chickens you will find anywhere..

be careful of what you read.. especially on byc.. there are so many amatures giving outlandish advice..

Touch'e TerriO.. did I really type ships ?? and yes, the cut on my thumb is in a bad spot.. as compared to , where is a good spot? I will have to keep that in mind the next time I cut myself.. It was strange,, didn't bleed right away, so I just kept on working.. then all of a sudden there was blood dripping off my thumb all over the place.. besides being a slow learner , I must be a slow bleeder, too..

gotta go get some breakfast.. I have been going since 6AM..

.......jiminwisc........

Good Morning all!
Just got done feeding the critters outside. The rabbits are going through their hay like no tomorrow! I've been putting off going to TSC down in Delevan (43mi away-one way!) for their small bale of rabbit hay. I just need to go....I think that will be a good field trip for today.

DrH-I know right! I hate kittens too!! They are evil creatures that lure unsuspecting people in because they act soooo cute and innocent! Then once they have you ensnared, they make you their little kitten slaves. They destroy all the things that you hold dear and tease the dogs because dogs are rather stupid to fall for Evil Kitten Tricks. They keep a person up all night because they can and then sleep all day gearing up for more Evil Deeds to be done at night.....Then some how they get away with it all because they have convinced us that "their just being a cat" !!! God bless cats! They are so cool!

FT- Great finds at TSC! Just my 2 cents here: Please be care full with the fish food for your chickens. That is a really really "hot" in protein so a little bit will go a long long long way. However, you will get some very nifty feather shine from the fish oils..... Hope my input didn't offend...

TO-When I was a kid, my doctor had huge tank that held a huge Pleco. He was still alive and well when I left his practice at 18. A few years later, I had to go pick up some records that they had found and the Pleco was still there in that tank-21 years atleast. He was about 2 feet long. They finally found him a home at a koi pond place.

BBP-Your pleco could be a dwarf species too. Cind is right about the tank size, although sometimes they still grow out of their tank. If you feed him spirulena (sp) food then he would grow more as long as he is not a dwarf or one of the smaller sized species... Spirulena is like steroids for plecos.

Angie- They should be fine with the treats and still give them the treats, but if they "protest" and want to only eat the bird seed/sprout treats, then you will need to be "mean" and only give them their chicken ration. This will unsure that they are eating a balanced diet.

Some hens scale back in production and some just stop. Sometimes it's breed and sometimes it's just the hen. IMHO, I feel that it is overall more breed then the hen. Although there are stellar layers and poor layers in any breed. Most hens lay well until they are about 2-3. Some breeds lay well for much longer then others and some breeds have short production cycles. Some breeds are just poor layers and suck at it. Like oh say Aseels....
Example: My PR's are laying as are my Barnies but not all of my Barnies are laying. PR's are bred for production so this makes sense to me that I'm still getting eggs from them. The Amaraucana is done until spring as is the Aseel. They are seasonal layers and Aseels are suckie layers to begin with! The Orloffs may give me an egg here and there but I don't expect to see good production till spring from them if I'm lucky. Then they will be close to done for their production life. They knock off laying well (50% loss) after their first year and by 2 they are headed for mature hendom. I have no clue what the Welsummer will do. I've never had one before so I figure I'll let her do her thing and I hope to get eggs in the spring from her.

Hens have a finiate (sp) number of eggs to produce. The reason the egg houses keep their hens on lights 24/7 is to get more then the average number of eggs a day (usually from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 a day). This is hard on the hen so at about 18 months the hens are done/spent and sold off for another purpose. But the way they use the lights is not just the only factor in how early their hens become spent. Stress in the number one reason. Unlike Jim's pampered Pets
smile.png
, the hen house hens get no fresh air, have no windows, doors, access to run around on the ground and they live in small over crowded conditions. Total stress.
Some home hen keepers who use lights, use them to "extend" the day so to speak. So they might have the hens day start earlier in the winter by putting lights on timers to go on in the early morning, then shut the lights off at dusk so the hens can finish their day normally and roost to sleep. To me this is no different then what happens naturally in the summer months and would not be as harsh on their little hen bodies as what the egg houses do. I don't think that you using lights to extend their day would but to much of a strain on their little bods and hence shorten their production cycle. They still will have sleep, fresh air, excercise, good food and companionship. They also will take a break when they molt regardless of the light-natural or artificial-something the egg house hens never get to do.
My lights are not on timers so my Girls get lights on when I feed. They do get natural light in their run and I make sure that the lights are off be dusk do they can roost. The few times I got home late to turn off the lights, the Girls we doing normal chicken stuff, like dust baths and other daytime activites. I had one Barnie on the nest laying so I waited until she was done. Interestingly, she did not lay until the next day.
The only reason I have lights is for the rabbits. I have the "sun" light lamps for them since I don't have sky lights in the coop area and it is rather dark and gloomy in the coop. This way the rabbits have some form of sum light.
In the spring, I'm half planning on building a rabbitry for them so then next winter the Girls will not have lights in the coop.

TO-My rabbits are in breeding cages in my coop. The hens leave the rabbits alone and like to pick at the hay and scratch through their manure.....composting at it's best!!! I know CC has her bunnies free roaming with her chickens and she has no problems. The reasons I don't do this is that one, I'd have to lay down copious amounts of chicken wire or hardware cloth on the floor of the coop to keep the rabbits from digging out and two I'd have copious amounts of baby rabbits running under foot!!

As far as the pullets go, you may possible get eggs from them but I would expect to see a very limited amount of eggs until spring March/April from them. Then they should produce well until molt.
