Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

FT, hope your roo gets there ok & in good shape.

Nice TV, TO!

MLH, you are a wealth of information! I've got 1x3" wire fencing on my floor. Alot of it. More HD than chicken wire & cheaper than hardware cloth. The rabbits can & will bite right through the chicken wire too, after it gets a little old & flimsy. Oh, and my boys are fixed too, so no hoards of bunnies flopping around here.

BTW, how do you like your Barnies? Had them long?

Ang, how far is the coop/barn from the house?

Too much to comment on but can't remember half of it. Have to get to bed anyway. Mom's coming in the AM. I just hope I can sleep. I went to the dentist at 2 for a cracked tooth & had to get 4 shots to numb the darn thing up. Every time they hit it with water or air, I almost jumped out of the chair. Better that than using the drill, I guess. It took an hour just to numb it, having to wait between the shots, and he hit a nerve on the first one. Not a fun afternoon. Or evening. I am first now starting to feel the numbness go away. Hope the pain doesn't start or I'll never get to sleep. I sure wish I would have eaten before I went, cuz I sure couldn't when I got home. Or drink, for that matter, without dribbling it all down my chin & shirt &.....Must make a mental note of that one. And you can stop laughing now, Jim. It must be the day for rambling on. Alright folks, I'm off to bed.
Sweet dreams, all!

Hi all!

DrH... Nice score on the jars! Glass jars are getting harder and harder to find! I'm now regretting getting rid of so many over the years.

Jim... I have come to the conclusion... Nothing is going to be as easy as it seems.... EVER!

Hope you heal well! I know what you mean though about cutting yourself and no blood right away... sometimes you don't even realize you really cut yourself 'till you see the droops!

TO...yep, the turtle lives in the house. When we moved the people we bought the house from left a 40 gal tank which was great for me, the 55 was a bit much for me to clean. I don't know how we would get him here, especially now that's it's getting so cold. That's about the only fish the turtle won't eat and they are good cleaners.

MLH... Yes, those evil kittens! When my son said they had a kitten hanging around I said I didn't want a kitten.... so he just brought it over.... evil kid!

Humm ... find another one legged woman and split a two two? Or ask the clerk if you can get 2 for one? Get a one-sy? Ok... I'll stop now...

Hi Flea!

Ken... OK, confused, are you giving away the eggs for trade for the stuff you need? Or because you don't have stuff to use the eggs with? How about omelets? Quiche? Custard? Or just look up eggs for ideas! As for your daughter, if this is on her chore list (kids should have chores... though they may hate them I think it teaches them allot) How about having her feed them and maybe a little cleaning too. You can "help" and supervise, but have her do the work. Also remind her they are living things that depend on her and the rest of you to take care of them.

CC... hope your tooth feels better!

A couple of years ago I started making chilli with tomato paste as a base instead of juice. That way you add water to get the consistency you want without having to cook it down so long. Anyway I asked DH to bring tomato past home from work and he brought a no. 10 can... 6lbs. 15 oz.! Sooo.... I took out 1 pt. for the chilli and added 2 pts. of water. Then I re-canned 4 more pts. for later and filled 1 1/2 ice cube trays! Cost $5.25 for about 5 1/2 pints of paste! Much cheaper than the little cans in the store!

I know I had more to say but can't think of it now.... oh well, post is long enough and I need to get to bed.... Night all!

EGG CLUTCH .... forgot all about this

Good chilly morning everyone. It is 17 degrees here is beautiful Rib Mountain. I just checked the chickens, The ceramic heater is working, says it is 40 degrees on the top of the coop but the water had a thin layer of ice on it, so it looks like I have to get a water heater for the chickens. I don't want to turn up the heater anymore, since it is 40 where they roost. The chickens came out again when i opened the coop. I have been giving them grain and cracked corn everymorning and they have been eating it up. I wonder how long it will be until they decided it is too cold to go outside. I am a bit nervious about this coming winter with them. I hope they make it. I am still getting 6 eggs a day from 7 chickens. Not sure who is being lazy, maybe they are taking turns.
lol.png

It looks like another wave of pink slips are coming at my school. Less money than last year. Not sure how many students we will have in our classes next year. This year they are all around 32 . Students are not getting all the individual attention they need but I am doing the best I can.

on the lighter note, i put up christmas lights and strung a set up in the shape of a christmas tree for the chickens, I am sure they could care less but it will at least light up the coop area.

Stay warm everyone, looks like we are going to be getting some snow in the next few days.

David

Sounds like more votes needed to recall Walker hey ???

Anyway, my Rooster made it to Crandon, have to go pick him up this morning !!!!

Now just waiting to hear from Fleet Farms Manager about getting a good deal on THE CORRECT TIRE !!! Hope I have enough in the checking now since the price will be over $200 more. Then of course I have to fill up the tank after my road trips taken in the last two days !!!! Where does it end ??

Yep, definately have a cold, Rats !!!! Soar throat, Stuffy nose. I bought the generic Coldeezze zinc lozenges. If you take them at the very first sign of a cold start sucking on them, They reallly do help reduce the duration and severity of the cold. I'm about two days late in starting them but better late then never !!! Hate this punky feeling on top of my normal $hitty feeling !!! lol

Ok, well, gott look up some phone numbers for tire places. What do all you experts reccoment, 10 ply for hauling hay and chicken food. We fill the bed of the truck and pull a trailer.
Good thing I can't find a One One in my size, it would be a hidious looking thing hey ???

What did the guy say to the one legged hitdh hiker ??? Hop in !!!

Thanks guys, talk later.

Celtic Chick: The area of the barn that is now a coop isn't that far-I have an extension cord out there for the heated dog water dish. However, trying to figure out a safe way to do this-hear so many stories of fires. Plus we have a hunting dog that keeps sneaking into the bard (she would love a lil chicken dinner) so trying to make it as closed up at possible.

KNAndrs: I would have to agree with jvls1942 on this. I completely agree that kids need chores...however I think its to help with the household chores? I currently have had similiar situation with my 12 yr old. My thought on this-I am the one who wants the hobby with the chickens....so my solution has been to offer her a quarter for each day that she goes out, closes up the coop before I get home, checks the water and collects the eggs-then writes down on a sheet that she did this for me to tally up at the end of the week. But as a chicken owner and adult its my responsibility to make sure they are taken care of? However, she has chores to take care of around the house that are expected. I would love to hear others thoughts on this as well.

Surprisingly-it was down to 16 last night-and the heated dog dish (that is not yet plugged in) was not frozen when I checked this morning. FF had them on sale for 19.99 a month ago. Im a little nervous as they sides are pretty high, that my banntys might not be able to reach in, or may fall in trying to get the water. I put it on top over an upside down metal pan to elevate it from the shavings. If the bantys fell in, the could get out easily enough but being all wet not sure they would survive-still brainstorming on this. I do know, this dish is a wh9ole lot easier to fill when its cold, rather than lugging the big heated waterer out and sloshing all over.

Good morning! FT DH says that it depends on what kind of truck. If it is a half ton those would be a waste of $$ but "load E" (10 ply) is good for a bigger truck. Or something like that....A one-one!!! Spit my coffee on that for sure!
WOW--really chilly up by you David! The porch says 30 here this morning....but it is really sunny so feels warmer to me. At least not windy like yesterday! Maybe I can do outside plastic today...David I think that your chickens will continue to come outside if their inside temps are not quite so high. As long as you dont have any drafts in your coop you shouldnt have too heat it at all. It looked pretty tight from what I remember! Save some $$ and just heat the water! You dont have a chance of getting laid off do you? I have forgotten what you teach...32 kids is WAY too many for a class IMHO!

Hey Ken...Jim surprised me with his answer to your discipline question! But he is right (dont go getting a big head now Jim!) I guess I would ask her what she thought she was doing by not giving them water or telling you they needed feeding...and if she likes eggs cause now that will put them off laying for a day or two! Maybe she set the waterer the wrong way and it all leaked out?

Cind...I could get the creature down to you if you would give him a home...I'd hate to put him on CL but I dont know what else to do with him! I cant even get any more fish cause I think he kills them and eats the evidence! Sure wish I had known about the Spirulina algae being like a steroid for them! I thought you had to give them some if the tank was really clean...and that was the best! LOL--for growing big!

Not much going on here yet today...DH is still home cause he had to download some stuff for a work computer he is fixing and then he is driving to Green Bay. A whirlwind tour of a job they are doing up there...and back home in time for dinner! He sounds like you FT!

The JRT had some difficulty in her kennel after her breakfast....I heard her whining
sickbyc.gif
Talk about a MESS! I think she has hookworms again...time for more meds! THanks God for zip-off covers on dog beds! SO she will have a nice fresh bed for tonight! Speaking of...it might be a great day to hang sheets out! I think I will! Right now I have to find something to eat...I didnt eat dinner last night cause I had had so much LO soup for lunch and wasnt hungry...I think I will have EGGS! (what else?) I even have all the ingredients...
clap.gif
Have a fantastic day everyone...enjoy the sunshine if you have some...heard it is supposed to get colder! Terri O

ETA: AngieB--you could put a big rock in the center...then they wouldnt go into the dish; and if they did they could get out easily. I put a SS bowl in the center of my heated dog dish to keep the ducks from swimming in it. THey still got it all wet around it and it shorted out before winter was over! That's the problem with ducks!

Another question in regards to the hens not laying/shortened light. Would it be a good idea to worm all of my chickens right now during the egg break/before the young pullets start laying? I hear so many stories back n forth on worming....dont unless you see signs etc.
However, I would hate to wait until spring right when they finally get into the groove of laying then suddenly have to throw a months worth away. I haven't seen any signs of worms-although I have to say-invetigating droppings isnt at the top of my daily "to do" list. I don't want to worm unneccesarily? of my 15 chickens, 8 came to me as day olds (now 3.5 months old) and the others (ages 4-6 months old) all came from a local breeder with healthy hens. (2 of which I believe she had wormed just before they came to me a month ago).
Thoughts?

KNAndrs:I have to agree with what many of the other are saying about chores and kids. My youngest (of six kids, and 14-years-old) frequently has issues with getting animal chores done, especially the litter box....mainly because there are so many chores to be done with horses, the flock of ducks, and cats and dog. I found that by being involved during chore time, I get the most help out of her. She loves the animals, but she really loves the interaction with mom at the end of the day. She always pitches in when I can't make it home on time, but when I'm home, it's our time together with the animals. In the end however, I have to know that I was the one that procured the animals and they are MY responsiblity.
