ChickenNewbie5from Waupaca! I'll send you a PM about the 1st Meet-n-Greet. Everyone's invited.

BBCB, Glad to hear that you reuse!

We're pretty big on reusing.

This coop we're building now is all reusing! The sides are trusses that came off a building that my DH got for free off craigslist. Well-he got 2 buildings actually. The one is where my coop is now. DH just cut the sides off, dropped it on a trailer, brought it home and reassembled it, and put on a metal roof instead of the shingled roof. That building is 12X24 and I got 12X6 ish for my coop. Then this other building was made of barn board. My DH took that for lumber for whatever.

So I get the other coop out of it.

ALL FREE!!!!!

Sounds like we have another convert to chickens in the making. Big Welcome CN5 !!!! Hope you find us helpful. We're all here for ya. Glad to hear people reusing and recycling! BBCB and fordmommy sounds like you've made some huge scores. I still haven't made it over to my friends house to check out his run and equipment. Thinking this week after work. Just afraid that I'll end up with enough so that I'll have to build another coop. Like the linoleum idea fordmommy. I've got the framing and roofing materials but need sheeting for the sides. Windows can be gotten off the curb. Now that I typed that I'd have to dig to see but there are a few windows in the shed. Dang it here I go again. I could extent the coop thereby eliminating one wall and a door......

I still have plenty of time.

Dug and moved a bunch of norway spruce today. I still have white fur and some blue spruce to do yet too. Seems like I move a few, have a few, and that's good for today! Gotta save some work for the next day, eh!

Have Fun... ~ bigzio

Thanks for the props fordmommy and Dr H...My initial plan was to limit my costs for everything to $500...and I'm feeling pretty good about keeping the costs down. I was in real estate for a long time and the economy drove my income into the dirt, so I've got to watch every penny...so I get excited about staying within a budget. It makes it easier for Mom to stomach as well.

Looks like the weather is going to approve nicely over the next couple of days, so I'm going to get some outside work done, incluing putting up the new run and getting the chainsaw out and cleaning up the woods next to the house.

CN5, welcome to BYC. I haven't been here very long but I can tell you that these are the best folks you're going to find, period. I'm so happy I found these folks, it's made the prospect of doing some chicken farming so much easier and fun. Good luck to you!

ChickenNewbie5! Like BBCB said these are a great group of people. Hope you can make it to the meet and greet in June.
Great day outside today! Cleaned up the yard and played with the animals. All the horses got a good brushing. You should see all the hair! The birds are loving it. I have another broodie! I moved her to the new nursery last night and she is still sitting! Hopefully she makes it.

Then I will get more chicks by the end of the month. All the goats are ready to go anytime now too. I love spring on the farm. Babies everywhere! I think that 3 out of the 4 chicks I got at fondy are boys. I'll post pics and you guys can give me your best guess. I know it's early but I can't have anymore boys. That little columbian might be one of them and thats disappointing. I really wanted a hen. But the frizzle is a boy and the other blue is a girl, I forsee blue babies in the future.

And actually one of the girls I use to work with wants a flock of her own and asked if I had any for sale. I told her that it's possible. I have 5 black girls and I would like more color so thats a possiblity. She has to build a coop first. Well off to bed, busy day tomorrow with it getting to 60ish I have outside work to do.

So get this my wife and I live in the upstairs apartment of a church for college students here at UWO. The last renters had 3 naughty very hyper active dogs, a parrot, and 2 degus (gerbils with funny ears). So we wanted there to be a rule NO PETS. So we had it put into our lease. We went to Neilsville swap last weekend and Ruth saw some iiiiittty bitty little quail chicks and fell in love. I have never seen chicks so small. (I never seen quail chicks before) She got all excited and said that quail dont get very big so they could stay in the house at our the house we are buying because they are not as big as chickens in the house.

She bought 7 tiny quail chicks at 9am. 6 made it home safely 12noon . 5 made it through until we went to fleet farm bought a heat lamp and some food. That was saturday now it is Tuesday and we still have 5 little quail in our dining room with the heat lamp clamped to the table. The chicks are in an aquarium left here by the previous renters. One of them only makes left turns and has a crooked neck. I shold put him out of his misery but it doesn't really seem like misery so we are letting him grow.

I figured we would try to keep it upstairs and not talk about it with the other students and the exec board but then we were talking about the swap and i spilled the beans. So that is why I have waited so long in writing about it.

Fordmommy, I figured our quail chick experience was going to be more like yours when it first started. They seemed like they got cold on Saturday and figured they wouldn't make it thorugh the night.

Looks like Ruth and I will be attending swaps weekly from now until late may. We have decided that we will go to every swap within a two hour radius. Ruth loves going to swaps now which I am so excited about that I found a wife that enjoys it as much as I do.

After the house is closed on Ruth is going to be coming home to take care of Noah, me, and customers when she can. I am so excited about this too because I could definitely use her help with Noah and customers. I am so excited that she is going to be a stay at home mom.
