Ghost, where are you??? I have a 50# sack of FG DE in my garage just sitting there not getting used. I would gladly trade you it for some eggs! I should say it is ALMOST 50#, I think I used about 2# of it for the friggin fleas we had around here....

I just had a bombshell dropped in my lap. A friend of my mom who is elderly, would like to sell her property (good rhyme eh? ;) )..... my DH and I have always LOVED this place, but I have no idea how we would swing the finances AND I hated growing up in this area... but the farm is just gorgeous! http://appleton.craigslist.org/reb/2813733303.html I would go and buy that little B/W paint in Amherst for sure! Check out the slide show if you can...... it is just paradise to me. Anyway, this friend would be willing to 'make a deal' and she knows we would love to buy her place....... I think we would need to win some big time bucks in the lottery first though..... and make some life-altering decisions.

Frenchie, I just had my Thyroid checked today so we shall see if I need and alterations in my meds. I do take extra D and fish oil to help with both my immune system and the memory.... I should really just take better care of things. I lose my wedding ring a lot since I do not wear it all the time any more (work) and I know I just set it down someplace, it was probably knocked off whatever surface I put it on and the cats could have rolled it off someplace. It will turn up eventually..... I hope!

Alright... When do chicks usually start to fly out of the brooder? Rocket escaped already! She's only a week and a half old!!! I took Venus and Comet out for some handling and left Rocket alone. Apparently she wasn't having any of THAT. We had the chicks upstairs with us for probably 30 min. My son takes Venus back downstairs and finds Rocket walking around the basement. Little monster...!

Im not even considering it... But was the April hatch chatter for hatch on April Fools or set? Just curious...

Just discovered that Meyer hatchery allows for small orders (3) so am trying to order-however having issues with their website!!! Any opinions on Mypetchicken vrs Meyers? Only places I can find that allow for really small orders...

I ordered eggs from my pet chicken. I have an order with Meyer to be delivered. Meyer will stik to their 3 chick promise. For WI, my pet chicken requires 7 chicks I think. I have an order pending with them for June.

I was really impressed with the video Meyer put together on their website. My pet chicken will sex some of the breeds that Meyer will only sell as straight run. (like Silkies).

I am no help since I am ordering from both! I can tell you what I think of Meyers delivery and chicks in 2 wks. But I absolutely LOVE the customer service of my pet chicken. Thy are Fabulous!!!

good morning, Robin, did I get a rise out of you? and then you said such a nice thing about me, I take it all back.. I meant to say, FT..

You're so sassy, Jim.

I do have a nest of bumbles in the grass a few feet from one of my gardens that I'm thankful for. I used to see lots of honeybees in our yard, but I haven't seen any for a few years now. It's kinda scary.

Relax, FT & Bf4. I didn't say I wouldn't candle them at all. Just not yet. I'm new to all this candling stuff, so I was going to wait for more development before I did it. The next time I incubate eggs from my girls, I will practice candling earlier so I know what to be looking for at what time in the incubation process. But since these eggs are not something that I could easily replace, I'm being a little more cautious with them. I don't want to handle them any more than I have to. I'm sure they had a rough enough trip going through the mail. Besides, you all know how long I've wanted lavs.

I have a red worm farm. My population has exploded over the years. They are awesome. They eat almost all kitchen scraps (too far gone for the chickies), coffe grounds, dryer lint & paper products. They just love banana peels, which I have a lot of because the girls just have to have their bananas. And those worms make the best darn fertilizer EVER! I haven't given them any rabbit crap though. That usually goes right into my rose garden for the earthworms to enjoy.

Kris, if you're buying a new Brinsea, check their website. It was the cheapest I could find.
Yes Sandi, would you have any interesting eggs for me to hatch out too??????????? Since that crazy Bf4 was so sweet to throw that out there.

It is for either or both, so take your pick. Since you have more than one incubator, you could do both, you know.

And FT has silkies!

Ugh! How does it get so darn late so fast? I've still got things to do so better scoot. Sweet dreams, all!

WOW--I think I just read through 10 pages or so...didnt think I had missed THAT much...but I guess you do when off for a day! THose piggies are adorable FT! So....the question remains...are you getting into the pig raising business now? I know a few years back there was $$$ to be made but now? I personally like Mr and Mrs Pig. Or maybe Peter and Peggy. Of course depending on if they will be husband and wife or bro and sis! (speaking of Sis...we really havent heard anything from her since Brent got his eyes back!) Good luck with the pigs whatever your plans!

I have to say that as long as you have wild birds anywhere in your yard or buildings...you WILL have bugs! I dont think that a few bugs in a controlled situation will hurt your chickens too much. It is if the chickens get old, handicapped or compromised in any way that the bugs take the upper hand, and get the advantage over their general health that you have the problem! I provide mine with a dust bath of wood ash (scarce this year), Sevin, DE and sand. They have free access to it in the coop. Sevin's generic name is Carbaryl and I generally buy it in the 3 packs at the end of the garden season so I have enough to last me the winter. It probably wont be out now until March or so. (get it in the garden section, cheaper!) I know that lice are species specific so you dont have to be itching! I am not sure about mites, but have not heard of anyone actually having them! I do know that the roos and the breeds with fluffy cheeks seem to harbor more lice than the other birds. I haven't had mites. (knock on wood!) It seems to me if you physically dust the roos and put dust in the nest boxes for the hens you will effectively treat all birds without too much work or stress. Remember--it is NORMAL for living beings to have some parasite activity! When it gets to an unbalanced state is when there is trouble.

Sheesh, after all that I cant remember what I was going to say...oh yea, about bees! We have 4 hives down in the back. They are fascinating creatures and if you get a chance to keep them please do! We had them for a few years but the neighbors all around us use crop dusters and we were finding that our bees were suffering! When we did have high activity my gardens and fruit trees were fantastic! I might try them again some time...they have their own little mite that they get and it is detrimental to a hive if you done treat for it!

Now I think I will go out and do chores...my best sheep was dead the other morning...she was off by herself when I fed (but did come to eat) and she was dead that night! I am thinking that she lied down in the sun and couldnt get up because her back was downhill--she was totally bloated that night and dead. I wonder how many babies she would have had? SO sad...I think I am getting out of sheep and goats...

Night--sweet dreams! Terri O

Evening All,

Well finally an incubator came up on the CL. I am getting a Hova bator tomorrow. This is the lousy pic from the ad

TO- I am so sorry to hear about your sheep, yours are awesome!!

I would advise anybody to get a turner.. in the beginning, it might be exciting and a novelty to turn eggs by hand.. but after a few batches, you will find it bothersom to have to leave a picnic or a family gathering to go home to turn eggs..

Ok all this talk of incubators is making me want one! Here is my question...
Brinsea 10 chicken egg incubator has:
  • Temperature factory preset at 99.5 F with easy tamper-proof adjustment
  • Flashing temperature indicator and conventional but accurate liquid in glass thermometer
  • Fan assisted air circulation
  • Humidity provided by water trays; not suitable for automatic humidity control.
I think I still need to manually turn it....

It is about $60-70... is this a good deal?

Just started checking some out and want your thoughts on your favorites or ease of use...vs cost.

FT- more piggy pics please, absolutely love them!!! Porgy and Bess?

Oh and Carol may say I am the chicken enabler, but she started it! I just showed her where there were a few nice birds that I was looking at, and she comes home with a bunch for her along with my two. Silly! She did have some great feedback for me on my coop and spring expansions for it! We will see what we can get done!
