Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

BBP: Sorry about Crystal-Hoping she turns up!!!!  How is the other L.O.(Lila?) the one that never went in the coop at night? And how about the one that was caught on the fence?
And I was wondering about the chicken drop as well ( I think you mentioned the one in NR now that I think about it) Who's chickens are they dropping? And where are they dropping them from? So you get a hen/roo-then have to quarintine for a month and try to introduce into your flock? Plus they are probably older chickens to boot. So 1) totally hard on the chickens 2) people will end up with them that potentially know nothing about chickens and are unprepared or else end up with an older chicken Hmmmmm All I can say is this is definately not Cali-PETA would have been there lol (And no Im not a huge PETA fan-just was sayin')

How many call eggs would you like, Jim?

Lila is doing good. She's actually crytals daughter. So now I have to keep her. But I did realize the other day that one of my other lavenders has "sprigs" on her comb. So I shouldn't be breeding her. How depressing. I paid $120 for the eggs I got her out of and 4 hatched! She's a $30 chicken. Oh well. But I will get you a lavender hen or pullet this spring. Even if its not Lila.
I'm separating my lemon blue cochin bantams and my lavender/isabel/porrcelain project orpingtons into breeding pens today. Should have done it yesterday and Crystal would still be alive :(

BBP: Glad to hear Lila is doing well. How about the one that was caught in the fence? and don't beat yourself up over Crystal-Im still betting she will show up.

As far as the chicken drop-I agree that they probably aren't dropping them from a helicopter LOL I'm still saying I feel bad for the chickens (Yes Im a softy). As far as PETA-I would agree with them being overboard-saw this myself when living in Cali. But I do think there is a place for someone to watch out for animal cruelty-think PETA goes about it the wrong way- a little overboard. IMHO

Hello... well back after a week in Milwaukee with my family after my aunts passing. Had to help with arrangements and transporting family members. Stinks that it takes a sad occasion to get everyone together. it is nice to see my cousins and catch up. Although staying at my moms condo with my sisters and my kids was way to squishy.
Say I have a friend whose dad may be willing to sell me some hatching eggs ( Fire up hte incubator carol!)- what are your thoughts on sussex. She said white or light.... I dont know much about the breed.... I know I am getting some marans from her but wanted to find out about sussex.
otherwise we are loving this warm weather and as soon as we can dig in some fabric wire, we will start the new run addition.

hope everyone is well. Sorry to hear about the losses. Cant wait to see more chick pics. Love them!

Jim...near the top of the page...just to the right of where it says go and also near the bottom across from where it says go, you will see new posts....click on those words and the last option says I've posted...click on that and all your posts will come up.....then click the little green box on the left and it will take you to where you left off. If the little box isn't green, then there isn't anything new there. No searching at all. Hope that helps.

Unk...I was just thinking that you could get straight run duel purpose chicks and butcher all the extra males at aboyt 16 to 24 weeks of age. That's what I usually end up doing every year. Just sayin.

Morning All!
Well, spent this morning driving to Darien to pick up some friends for Ben. He is very ungrateful -the snot. He now has little fuzz butt friends and yet he still wants to scream his head off! My gosh he is a high maintenance birdy! I bet he is a she!!! LOL!!! He'll settle in a bit.
I will post some pic of his friends in a bit. Have a few errands to run first!

Other then that everyone is fine here! I have two really sweet baby bunnies that I'm considering selling. I think they would make a great start for a meat rabbit herd or pets maybe. They like to be held and cuddled with and come up to me when I'm messing around in their cage. The other three are rather spazzy and one can go either way. We'll see. Can't keep them all or I'd go broke!!
I have yet to sex them though as they are a little to young yet to tell hims from hers.

Not much else to say so I best get gone for now...

good afternoon. well, I did move the goslings in with the quail.. the quail were a bit skittish about it at first, but they are eating and drinking now, so I think all is well. just for insurance, I put a heater in with them.. at least it will keep things above freezing in there..

and as long as I was in the moving business, I caught all the rest of the barred rock hens and put them in with the rooster.. he has 8 girlfriends now.. In 2 weeks I will start saving whatever eggs they lay and fire up the incubator again..

and as soon as Marlene comes for that odd-ball rooster, I am going to put the Delawares into that pen..

I ran out of layer feed.. It sure makes a difference in egg production.. tomorrow I am going to go get a truckload so I don't run out again..

the sun sure feels good on my back.. they say that when the sun warms a rooster's back, that is when they get amorous.. (that means horney, CC)

I heard about this last night and watched the video. I'm sure most of the chickens are ok BUT the chances are great for injury. Never mind what is going through their little minds.
All of us that have our "pet" chickens know that they have individual personalities etc. How you would you like to see Your Chicken thrown off of a roof into the arms of or at the feet of someone drinking and laughing. Would you hand your chicken to a complete stranger that hasn't the foggiest idea of how to care for it. Would you sell your chickens to a home where it would be the only one if it wasn't going to be a pet or "house" chicken?
It's not these chickens fault that it doesn't have a special spot in someones life like some of ours. Does that make it "just a chicken" that can be treated like something that doesn't feel fear or pain ? I don't think so !! I don't agree with everything PITA has to say but if they didn't make such a stink the way they do no one would pay attention to them at all.

As far at the pig chase.

I see Temple Grandin wrote a book titled "Humane Livestock Handling" http://www.amazon.com/Humane-Livestock-Handling-Understanding-facilities/dp/1603420282 Everyone that raises livestock ought to read it !!

"....Nature is cruel but we dont have to be." Temple Grandin

On a lighter note. My new piggies Larry and LuLu are taking food from my hands now.
And my older chicks are learning how to drink with the nipple waterers !! Yippee less poop in the water.

Congrats to all the new chick mama's and dada's !!

BBP how much are you asking for the Call duck eggs?

Cind, what kind of fabric did you make your aprons out of? Got pictures yet? I want to start sewing but with all these critters it's nearly impossible !!!
I saw someone on CL was looking for bantam cochins to start a breeding program. I replied and told them about my roosters. Not holding my breath though !

DH went to get Hay, every 10 days 85 bales !!! Cheaper then feeding the chickens though. Some roosters gotta go! Anybody? I've got a few RIR roosters.
Black Ameraucana Roosters. Anyone ??

PS I see in 2005 the United Poultry Concerns tried to do something about the Chicken Drop, obviously it didn't work.

Congrats on the chick, Terri!

I liked the time thingy on the old BYC too Jim, but if you hover your mouse over the "how long ago" it will tell you what the time of the post was. I'm glad Nora is feeling better. Poor girl.

Kris, sorry to hear about your aunt. DHs family thought the same thing about the only time they got together was at funerals, so they started an annual family get together. There are 6 cousins in his family here in WI, DH & his sis being 2 of them, so every year we each take turns hosting it. I think this will be the 9th or 10th year this summer. Lots of good times.

Gee, I'm so glad I've got you to interpret all those big words for me, Jim.

I hear ya, FT. Most people in general just make me ill with their shallow, selfish thinking, especially where animals are concerned.

Well, it's been a busy weekend here. DH took mama Alice back out to the coop yesterday & put her in with Jack (banty) and Shadow bunny. She immediately started scratching & pecking about, investigating everything. Then she decided to escape into the larger area where all her sisters were. Amazingly, there were no brawls, but Moose was always at her side so that might have had something to do with it. The chicks cried for a couple minutes, but once I started talking to them, they quieted down. They have been very, very good since she left, which really suprised me, TG. Hopefull the weather will continue to be mild so I can move them either out to the coop or the garage in a few weeks.

Yesterday the bator countdown hit 0 but no signs of life. We went out for dinner for MILs birthday, still nothing when we got home. I figured when I got up this morning, there should be something. Nope. Started getting really depressed. Finally around 11:30ish one got a teeny pip. Whew! An hour later, it zipped. Whoo-hoo! Less than a half-hour later, we had a chick! A very dark chick with dark feet. Funny colored lavender chick.

And now the 2 other eggs are finally starting to pip also. Boy, this has been the longest 3 weeks ever! But at least I finally (hopefully) have some lavs! Thank you, Bf4!!!!!!!!!!! You're the ......... well, you know.
