Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I am going to reply post for post or I will lose my train of thought.. it is a very short train..

TerriO, I wait with baited breath for every one of your posts and read them religiously..

as long as you are charging up the battery, leave it charge awhile,, it is much better than letting the car charge it ..

Now, about the turner motor and temps.. I just wrote a loooong explanation to that guy on the incubation thread in a PM.. I will try to make it short..

the motor cannot heat up the incubator to 99.5F all by itself.. therefore it cannot put it over the top.. the motor will cause the bator to cool off slower after the heating element shuts off, and it will add some heat as things are warming up.. neither is a problem..

If you have followed my set-up instructions, the incubator will NOT/ cannot over heat..

I used to run 8 LG and Hova's at a time.. never had one "spike" over 101F..

the whole trick is to set up your fail safe temp first..

eya: not muscovy.. my guess is Pekin also, except for the darker hue on the back.. those could turn into dark feathers, then you will have to wait and see..

Ok everyone. I am trying not to freak out about chicken math. I am thinking about how many chickens I will have by June. I am thinking I am going to be way in over my head. I need people to tell me chickens are really easy to keep, and that all will be well.

1st batch of chicks: 3
2nd batch of chicks: 5
3rd batch of chicks: 20 from Bev Davis
4th batch of chicks: (still incubating) may be keep an LO or two?
5th batch of chicks: 9 chicks

That will be: 3 Easter Eggers, 1 Cochin, 1 BCM, 1 Splash Marans, 20 Wheaten Marans, 5 silkies, 4 Faverolles, 1-2 Lavender Orps.

Seriously, I was fine with my numbers. But the Bev Davis opportunity was not expected. So as of right now I only have the tiny coop which holds 4 LF. I have 2 brooders going. Talk me down off the chicken math ledge! Tell me I am not a nut job for getting so many chickens. Tell me I can totally do this, and will love it. Tell me I will have lots of delicious eggs to eat and share. AAAAHHHHHH!

(the overwhelmed feeling has nothing to do with feeling crappy I'm sure... But pep talks and words of encouragement would be lovely)

You can do it. :) It'll be fun :)

Hello to all on here,

I am a VERY seldom poster on BYC. Not that I'm anti social, but then again, maybe I am....

I live not too far from Terry O (Hi Terry)

Seems like I was toodling around a few days ago, and saw that someone needs a Langshan rooster? I couldn't find the post, but didn't look too hard either.

If I was correct, and that person still needs one, I have a Black Langshan rooster and no girls to go with him. He came from Sandhill Preservation last year, and was supposed to be a Penedesenca, but is obviously not. That order was strange, we got birds that we did not order. Anyways, he is a wonderful rooster. Very calm, the girls just adore him.

I can post a picture if anyone is interested. He can stay if I don't find a home, but it would be good to see him go somewhere where is really appreciated.

Went to the town board meeting yesterday about getting chickens...they are going to look into the matter and maybe decide either way at the next ordinance meeting...and the reason why is our well water and only having an acre of land. My water is full of pesticides from the golf course across the street...is the township going to stop the golf course from spraying crap on the fairways...I think not...what's a little poo going to do...not much...

Exactly!!! Argh! Some city people have such wierd ideas! Good Luck!

Bf4 you can do it. I don't know what type of brooders you have, but I have found that the big produce boxes from Walmart make good brooders. You can put a wire cover on and a heat lamp.

Well back to reading.

The little chickies sound pretty spunky CC. how cute. Hope they didn't run into any problems this morning.

Wow Terri I hope you can get to the doctor. Strep can cause problems with your heart if you dont get it treated.

DrH I would reply but have no idea what you are talking about. All this mechanical stuff.lol Good luck.

Jim I just got an LG no fan, no turner. What should the temperature measure at the top of the egg? Thanks :)

MLH That darn Lucy! Sounds like you have a lot of animal drama going on today too.

Cute ducks! And mechanical too! lol

I cannot attest to if you are a "nut job" or not.. prolly are.. if you are attached to this group in any way.. I figure you will have less than 40 birds.. heII, I have that many extra that I don't even count.

I would suggest you start building a BIG coop.. at least as large as a 2 car garage ,,,for starters..

the duck looks like a pekin to me,, If those are not dark feathers on it's back.. I do not think it is a muscovy..

eta: you must be a member of byc incubation and hatching thread..

"at the egg level"? your temperature is the same at all levels in that teenie , tiny box..

the temperature for hatching eggs is 99.5F.. all bators are alike in that respect..

for initial set-up.. dry out the incubator completely.. get the humidity down to about 25%.. DO NOT add any water.. now set your temperature until it holds at 101F that is your fail safe setting.. no more adjustment is needed.. now you may add water, the temp will go down.. it will be your operating temp from now on..it might not be exactly 99.5, but it will be close enough

DO NOT adjust the temp any more or you will screw up your fail safe temp..

you will know when to add more water when the temp begins to go up. the temp will not go over 101F, no matter what...

Are they lemon blue? A dark blue? NICE cushion! They take a while to grow out don't they?

BlackHorsehill I don't know if anyone was interested in a Langshan rooster but I was interested in seeing a picture. They are so lovely. I would be interested in some langshans if I didnt already have so many birds.
