Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good evening, fellow Cheesies! I have a quick request (yeah right) and then I've got to get my keester to bed.

I met a new member to BYC this evening named Toastedrob1. He is new to BYC and would like to get into chickens. He is interested in getting some pullets that have just started or are about to lay. He was thinking of Americaunas (sp?), and since I know nothing about them, I thought I'd ask you kind folk to help educate him on them. He also mentioned that he would like birds that would be able to handle our winters well (I don't know if Americaunas do?). I did mention that birds with rose or pea combs would be good choices. Any comments/ideas on some good breed choices? I believe he is in or near Milw. Co. & is looking to get around 5 birds. And if anyone knows where he could get some started pullets, that would be a great help too. I did mention Craig's List to him, before you open your mouth, Bf4.

Thank you all in advance for giving him some great advice and welcoming him to our thread. You are all da best!

Sweet dreams, all!

Thanks celtic chick.
I would reply to your pm but for some reason I can only do that twice a day.

In answer to your qiustion it was the manufacture that says I can have 5 in my coop but I think 3 or 4 will be better. And yes I have a heat source and electric in my barn for the winter months.

I would prefer brown layers but not a must.

Yep, I should be cleaning but.... got lazy!

Apyl... Sorry about the duckling.

Ken... hope the hatching went well!

bl4... Too bad about your hen, she sure was a cute chick!

mxm.... maybe try deck sealer? Suprised Jim or one of the "other guys" didn't chime in!

Angie....Haven't tried to balance an egg for about 20 years.... I should try tonight! hehehe

Toastedrob... do yo want to be toast or rob for short here? LOL Anyway, I'm sure within a week or two we'll have that coop full and you wondering how you can get away with a bigger coop and more chickens!

Nothing exciting here.... night all!

Good Morning Good People! When I first heard about Clintonville I thought Bigz had been eating sauerkraut

Jim it was the segment gear that the lock pins drop into that adjusts the angle of the disc's that broke. The disc was modified for a 3 pt hitch. When it comes up all the way up it hits the top link. I have the chains limiting the sway. Need to do some more lookin to see if I can modify it further and eliminate the offending adjusters. Think I can just won't be able to change the angle is all. No biggie. It's a single axle disc. Think I'm going to fix that creep too! In my spare time

I know they have repair kits for it.

And the oldest DD had a great first day working with a vet in Marshfield. She was all worried but it's a younger vet and I had told her that he would remember what it was like being a newbie. AND it's now official I'll be taking one final trip down the isle. Youngest DD got engaged yesterday!

I knew about it a week ago Sunday when her Beau asked for her hand. It was really really hard not to say anything to anyone!

Oh No... I. See. A. Kilt. Please tell me it was just for fun. Please tell me you are not Scottish. I am a FREAK for men in kilts. Yes people... I am happily married! But a man in a kilt is just........ Sigh..... ;)

Welcome TR, These people are great at finding people chickens . It's so hard to ignore some of the posts and not get more lol.

Angie - I did this with my DD last night then she googled why it can happen and we found out its an urban legend sadly. I guess it can be done anyday. But it was fun to do.

DrH - Congrats to you and your DD on her engagement :) And good luck to your other DD on her new job.

Good Morning everyone. Another unseasonable great day in the making. I'm not sure what I will do today besides the normal cleaning and stuff. Maybe I'll try to pick more 2x4's out of the wood pile. I finally got the Training collar I order for Wilbur and its awesome lol. I think he knew if he got out fo line he was going to feel something lol. Talk about a completely different dog, once that collar was on he was a perfect angel. So I tested him and let him in the run with me when I was closeing up the chicks last night and all he did was sit there, then laid down. I couldnt beleive it. I didn't have to dicipline him once. I know to still not trust him but this is a HUGE impovement. Oh and he didnt leave the yard once last night. So I guess today I'll see how it goes and if he keeps this up.
Oh and guess what DH asked me...... "So, can you get a chicken that already lays eggs?" lmao this coming from a man that said the chickens were all mine and he wasnt interested. Now not only is he having me pick him up 3 ducks this week, now he was a full grown hen. :)

Thanks celtic chick.

, we have Wellsummer chickens-lays a tera cotta color egg and Marans chickens- lays a darker brown egg that both do well in our WI weather. This group is good for helping with adding chickens!

Good morning folks,

Joe my 2nd thought after frac drilling was all that corned beast and cabbage that went down a few days ago,,,congrats on the DD news,,both of them!

now lets see,,,,,,,imagine a Celtic Chick making contact with a guy in a kilt,,,duhhh

as others have said,,,,this thread is full of enablers I'm sure you will find some brown egg layers here Toastedrob (wonder what got toasted when wearing a kilt)

got the water going to the tunnel,,,really dry in there with this sun/heat all the beds need a good soaking, soil samples pulled and will be sent today to the lab,,,,,more early greens planted tomorrow,,,might even get some cukes started in soil blocks to plant a few weeks early (with coverings) I need to get to my potato farmer friend today and secure my seed

Just emailed my onion supplier and moved up the shipping date,,,,same with the asparagus plants I had ordered

need to make a screen door for that brooder, guess I didn't realize how soon chicks and jump/fly the one that got out yesterday got over an 18" blocker board,,,,,,betcha he was surprised at that big ole world he found,,,heh heh

bbl need to get waterers filled and this trailer unloaded

Wahoo! Yesterday was lockdown. The Brinsea doesnt stop is turning until 2 days before, so I had left the turner in there. Took it out this morning, put in some paper towel, and topped off the water. I heard a baby peep at me from inside the egg! Oh hello sweet baby.... Momma is waiting to meet you.... Come on out and play!

The Brinsea is in our bedroom with 5 viables in it. The hovabator down stairs has 20 in it. Due date is tomorrow. I'm gonna be a new momma again. But then I'm going to sell my children ...

Btw... So far we have spent no money on the coop. All supplies on site already! I did go ans pck up a misit can of paint for $4.50 yesterday. The misfit paint section is AWESOME!

And ... Yes Dan... It is funny to see Celtic find a guy in a kilt. That is usually my job. But she hides a lot of mischief behind that innocent looking exterior. ;)
