Judge!

Good afternoon and

Judge! As you probably have read, many of us are very good at chicken math and can help you with most anything you desire! Like MLH said--post what you are looking for or interested in and there is a good chance that somebody has what you are after.

My friend finally stopped by to pick up her hatching eggs! These are the 2nd set of 18 that I saved for her...the others were getting towards a week old so I sold them! They are doing a little experiment for me because I included some white eggs from the Blue Andalusian hen that is bred to the Wheaton Ameraucana...I want to see what the offspring look like and what color egg they will lay!

I went out to do short stint in the garden...picked another yellow squash. I might include it with the potatoes for tonight. I am making a beef roast on the grill, gravy and mashed potatoes...or maybe herb buttered depending on if I get enough energy to pull up some new potatoes. I yanked out some of my garlic and the bulbs are about the size of a quarter around...not very big. Maybe they will get bigger?

I am trying out the "ice rocks" that DH brought for a present last month. I had forgotten all about them. THey are cubes made of rock that you freeze and then put in drinks...so far I like them a lot! My drink isnt diluted at all and I am almost finished with it! FOr those of you who are curious, I am having a Rum and Cherry Coke. (not bad at all!) The one thing I will say is that I miss the clattersound of the ice cubes....it is weird not to hear it!

FT I wish your DH all the prayers and luck in the world! My neighbor had nodules in his lungs too and they called it "pigeon lung". THey were big time bird breeders though and he spent much time in their outside bird room that was closed up with none-too -clean cages. I dont want to be the one to call the kettle black, but I think of him all the time when I see some of my stuff! Makes me think that a mask might not be a bad thing for sure!

OK--gotta get that roast in a pan for DH to put on the grill...there is NO WAY I am putting it in the oven! Maybe I will do baked potatoes instead....then I can just set them out on the sidewalk to bake...

Later all! Terri O--who LOVES a day off!

Judge-PR's are good birds. They pretty much get along with anything. Since you have large fowl, I'd probably stick with them verses getting into some of the bantam (small) breeds. If you buy from a hatchery then they can ship but the ship the birds as day old chicks.
Craigslist and chicken swaps are a possible place to look to. Your county fair or contact your local 4-H group or FFA group. The poultry leader will know of kids who might have chickens available.
I know there are Cheesies here in your area but they will be on later.
Wherever you get them from, don't forget to quarentine them in a seperate area for 30 days before you introduce them to your exhisting flock. When you finally do introduce them, you will have some fighting as they establish a pecking order but having a rooster will help with the introductions.

BL4-Oh put a sock in it!!! LOL!!

Jim~you anywhere near Edgar? If my current bird purchasing attempt doesn't work out, I might be interested in your Rocks
big_smile.png
if they are still available then. BTW~do you know when the next big antique engine show in Edgar is?

Oh boy, just went out to check on my girls and thought I would walk thru the bean patch and chase some grasshoppers into the run. Looked down and I have a TON of beans ready! so much for my shopping trip tomorrow.

Braggin Afternoon Here Too....really nice rain for the gardens today....I get a evening off from watering the gardens today.....
bow.gif
It sure came down for awhile.

Welcome Judge...lots of folks with peeps prolly a hour drive or so from you.....it would sure beat having shipped chicks and minimum order numbers, and the cost will be way less from folks on here. Good Luck, I know we can help. Driving and picking up the peeps is way less stress for them and you.

Vicki, I am not too far from Edgar,, about 15 - 20 minutes.. I will find out when the steam show is.. It always sneaks up on me every year..

right now I have prolly 50 pullets coming along.. either Delawares or Barred rocks.. More Br than Dels.. I am getting rid of 4 Dels this weekend.. trading for a bunch of quail eggs to hatch.. was going to just get quails, but I will end up with more of them if I hatch them myself.. don't ask me why I want quail.. I get them, then I get tired of them ,, and so the cycle goes..

Judge, what kind of rooster do you have ? If you breed those red stars, you will get a real mess of colors.. If I were you, I would start out with one breed, then decide if you want other breeds and what kinds.. If you start out with a mix of breeds, it takes forever to eradicate the random colors..

I'm being called for supper.. shrimp cocktail, broasted chicken and scalloped potatoes.. raspberry pie for dessert..

...............jiminwisc.........

jvls- when we got the birds we were told that there were 6 New Hampshire pullets and 6 Buff orpington pullets. Well... we ended up with at least 3 PR roosters and 3hens (hopefully) and 6 Red star pullets.

I do not want to breed any of them. We were just waiting to be sure which ones were roosters and keep one and then butcher or sell the rest. That is why I would really like to get a few more laying hens to add to the flock

Evening All,
I think we have the HOTTEST temps down here below Madison.. so what do I win?

SO part of the panic about hay, Joan my barn owner and some of our neighbors have been counting on the non existant rain for hay. I found some hay, it turned out to be
Marsh Grass or ditch grass at $40 a piece for round bales she went out and paid for it $2k... they then shot her and I a price to deliver it, and then nothing but silence since last
friday... oh and not fully knowing ALL the details, Joan's daughter called seeking hay for her own horses to the same guy who "sold" the hay to Joan, when SHE called, he either answered OR returned HER call, needless to say there are some very ****** people around here right now.

So my DH hit his head pretty hard last night with a good sized lump which left him very dizzy this A.M., he had gotten ready for work, taken a shower.. etc etc... then too dizzy to go to work.
So I am up, decide to get a drink of water.. AAAaaaannnnddd.

and (see above smilies)
so I call the land lord,
And luckily it was just the switch so now we are bathing in ice cubes.. no not really JK.
But well the water pressure is sure up!!

The chickens are doing great despite the heat. and apparently so are our parakeets.. LOL they are inside.
any hoo its 6:15 and its a balmy 101.. woo hoo??? bleh

Wow Carol... thought you were going to be in the same boat as us but your getting off lucky!... good to hear! Looks like our pump is fried!

Welcome Jude... is that right?
