Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Beautiful Day here on the Hill... The neighbors were on the highway...hard to say what it was..I'll be seeing them and finding out firsthand what it was, and let you know TO.

Busy today...another gallon of pickles and half a pail of broccoli.....thinking more bacon and cheese broccoli salad.

Thanks for posting the relish recipe Doc....mine is different some..I'll see if I can talk suzie into posting it...we use a hand meat grinder for the goodies...we also add sweet red or green pepper and celery, and no flour and more sugar. It's all good when ho-made.

Tailgate brats tonight on the grill with a little applewood added for flavor... with the extra cukes, Suzie scrubbs them and slices them and onions, mixing with 2 cups white vinegar and a half cup of sugar....I mix the stuff in a quart jar and dump on the pickles and onions in a deep container and allow to soak for at least 8 hours or more ( edit, in the fridge )....delish and crispy.

Have fun Doc...hope you catch some eatin fish.

Everyone must have been very busy today...not too many posts to read! My plans about using the computer while at my client's place didnt work out...thye dont have wireless. There were a bunch of places nearby that I tried to hook up to but nothing seemed to work--oh well, I wasnt there very long anyhow! Her son woke up and said he would look after the DH so all I did was take him for a wheelchair ride and got him back in. Easy shift for sure!
THen I hit the grocery store and got some bargains and cashed in my rain-checks from last week. Helped DD bathe the horse for the show tomorrow and now am relaxing a bit. THinking I need to go out to the garden and see if there are any more cukes. We make them that way too Bigz, but I also add green pepper to the mix. Gotta slice everything really thin....see if Suze would her recipe...I have one that was my grandmother's and it is sooooo good. I would like to compare. Her recipe doesnt have flour in either and I was surprised that DrH's does...all my books say to use ClearJel for a thickener as flour can do weird things during processing? (any odd stuff going on in your canner Doc?)

Making brats on the grill for supper and I wanted to do some of my corn and black bean salsa but that recipe book is at work! I might try and wing it though, how hard can it be hey?

H&R and Carol--my friend realized that it was NOT me who said I knew someone that had banties...it was another friend of ours co-incidentally also named Carol! Isnt that funny? She messaged me to tell me that I wasnt crazy...at the time I asked her if she dreamed it.

Well DH just said he was starting the grill...guess I'd better git and make that salsa! Later----

We just finished grilling out too. Made some sweet corn I picked up at the farmer's market yesterday and some black berried for dessert too!

Spent most of the day in Marshfield. Walked around Hub City days and looked at the classic cars. Took DD through the zoo as well. Stopped in at Gordie's out on H and picked up a few chickens too. He had a Black Penedeseca roo that I can use with my hens. But I couldn't just go home with one... oh no! lol I added a few other pullets as well, 2 Buckeyes, 1 Blue Orpington, 1 more Blue Andalusian, and then DD picked out a Buff Polish. That Polish is so funny and calm!

We had 4 more Swedish Flower Hens hatch and 1 more Wheaten Marans. I think that may be all we get out of these eggs.

I opened the door and let the chickens out for the first time ever, about 5 min ago. I am a nervous wreck! Hopefully by the time I get DS3 in bed I will be able to spend a lttle tome out there with them with our other kids. I can tell that they love being out. So fun to watch them explore. I am terrified something will eat them though!

I had an incident with raccoons last night. Luckily my rooster fought it/them off long enough for me to wake up and get the dog on the job. He lost a ton of fethers but you can't tell by looking at him. I thought for sure he was dead because I couldn't find him after the incident and there were feather clumps all over with spit on them. But he was out there crowing this morning. Best rooster ever! He's an Iowa blue.

I am tired.. worked until a bit after dark.. Dan, the pin was stuck just a bit.. I knocked it all the way out of the hole and the loader lifted real easily.. I have the whole thing suspended.. tomorrow I will pull the tractor out from under it.. taa ****** daa.

I sold both puppies today.. along with 6 young pullets and 7 laying hens.. and 2 half grown geese..

this last bunch of keets is dumber than a mud fence.. they took two days to figure out that they should go under the brooder in their pen.. it is lighted and warm, but they would rather huddle ten feet away in a dark corner..

time to shower and get to bed..

Hi all!... Looks like a lot of people busy, gone, or hiding!

vivki.... Glad your (well, your girl's) eggs are back up to par! Hope they stay that way!
judge.... LOL... sometimes they don't play by our rules! My girls are hiding a bunch again ... have no idea where!

If you start leaving them out a couple hours before dark and when they get the hang of going to to coop on their own, you can start letting them out earlier, and earlier..

Jim... Too bad about those keets, guess you got to adjust that brooder a bit. At least you have the tractor and birds to help with the puppy withdraw!
TO... MORE critters?!

CS... Glad your getting good eggs now too!

MLH...Duh!

Casie... Nice goin' on the birds!

BBP.... SCARY!!!! That brave roo deserves a big reward!!!

FT.... How's it goin'?

Not much going on here either. The new mom didn't give me much of a chance to see the keets, I did see eggs pipping.... hope they hatched! Hated moving them that late but like I said... other hens were crawling in with her to lay and I was afraid the keets would get hurt. It's a gamble I guess. I'll check again Sun.

Chickenscratch, I have been working with this Setter, doing the same things you have done. It's good to know you were successful...that there's light at the end of the tunnel! My two biggest problems have been 1) It's actually my boyfriends' dog so when he comes home from work he tends to be 'the fun guy' and undermines everything I've done. and 2) The previous owner trained him to hunt with a shock collar so it's almost like he's scared to 'break point'. The good news is that the separation anxiety is pretty much under control...it took a lot of work but it's been worth it to see the dog calmer and not in a panic like he used to be all the time.

Kris, I can just picture your Vizsla pointing that statue....cute! They are so pretty, sleek and athletic. Sounds like she had a 'soft' mouth. I don't know if I would trust this Setter to do the same. My Springer Spaniel is that way tho...he's brought me baby birds from the yard without a scratch on them.

Apyl, I just feel sorry for him when he shakes like that. It's almost like he's saying 'PLEASE Mom, flush this bird!!'

Done with pickles for the weekend. I was looking forward to a good crop of tomatoes but now my plants are dying! Leaves have spots on them and are turning yellow and drying up...anyone know what's causing this?
