Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

The cyotes were yipping and yapping about 1/8 mile or less away at about 3:30am.... the roosters head them too.... and started crowing....got to thinking.... STUPID ROOSTERS! Nothing like letting them know where you are!

Wow that's weird...the same thing was happening here at 3:30..But it was the neighbors roos crowing. Lots of yotes here this year.

Morning all!
Just thought I's stop in and catch up a little before I get going. Our Charter cable box is giving up issues so the Charter guy is coming out this morning. I miss the good ol' days when tv was free. *sigh* TV always worked unless the power went out.

Vicki-I thought the Ceremony was cool right up through the Industrial Age. Then in went down hill fast and got really boring. Hated the Electronic Era. Loved the skit with James Bond and the Queen. Kudos to her for going along with it! I actually liked the Parade of Nations, That was the fasted Parade ever! The poor announcers had trouble just getting the names of the Countries out before the next country was walking by!

Cind-That is kinds funny your roosters were ringing the dinner bell!

TO-Good luck to DD at her show today! I think you should ride dressage. It's a ball and a half! The jumping is fun too. Until you fall then it's not so fun...Especially when your jumping cross country and the fences are solid and you land on one. That really hurts. On second thought.....just stick with dressage......

Ok gotta go

morning everyone

Now I know where the "herd" of coyotes went that we had last couple years. The predators were so thick here that everything disappeared. No bunnies, turkeys, field critters, even deer to be seen. Then a wolf or two appeared, coyote problem solved, balance restored, wolves moved on (like they do people). Now we have turkey pullets playing in the field again, hawks taking care of the field mice and ground squirrels, the neighborhood bobcat keeping the bunny population in control and deer spotted at the edge of the woods, sneaking over to the oat fields down the road. Yes, even a pair of eagles over the field checking things out on their way to the lake (puppy and chooks! duck and cover!). Maybe even the great horned will return now. I know, but it was really cool to listen to him (and her) "talking" by their nest at the other end of the field. Even heard them land on our roof a couple nights, BIG birds! The balance will remain until the coyotes get out of control again. In the past when the population exploded, mange would often bring them back into check but must be the mild winters lately that helped their numbers. Left alone, Mother Nature is amazing.

Did I mention one Sunday morning as we headed for town we even saw a moose standing beside the road not 3 miles from home? (this was 2-3 years ago and there have been lots of Moose sightings over and IN, Lake Metonga. We have prime moose "turf" in our back forty so maybe some day?

Most likely blight, either early or late,,,UW Plant Pathology Dept was doing free testing last year, you could contact them,,,Amanda Givens is very helpful

http://www.plantpath.wisc.edu/wivegdis/

late blight is NOT good, recommended you pull the plants and burn them, or double bag and landfill. (This is the same blight that caused the Irish potato famine, needs to be addressed seriously)

that said there are a host of diseases that present themselves best to check on the testing

stiff and sore today did alot of running yesterday, had a plan for butchering early things got messed up, but I did do 8 of the roosters, the 21wk Marans and Olive eggers,,,,today they get finished and frozen, one in the stock pot right now,,,

had a doe rabbit drop a her 1st litter 3 days early on the wire, got a box in and setup, 7 out of 8 kits were fine last night, hopefully she mothers them well

Jim glad you are safe and found the problem

might run to that auction today, call in to the owner checking on some sexlink pullet

need to get chores done,,,bbl

THE RACE IS ON!!!!

Let the girls out into the garden area a bit ago. Just heard a ruckus, took a look and one of my hens (Crockpot of course) just managed to get hold of small vole! She is now running round and round the workshop and garden with my big hen, Soup, in hot pursuit!

Thankfully the little Vole looks already deceased.

Poor little Stirfry is missing out on all the fun because she is sitting on the nest.

At least I don't have to worry about upping the protein for those two today

I had an incident with raccoons last night. Luckily my rooster fought it/them off long enough for me to wake up and get the dog on the job. He lost a ton of fethers but you can't tell by looking at him. I thought for sure he was dead because I couldn't find him after the incident and there were feather clumps all over with spit on them. But he was out there crowing this morning. Best rooster ever! He's an Iowa blue.
Glad you got out there in time!!

I bet that was quite the site to watch!!

DD is outside playing with her Polish hen again this morning. Such a calm bird, she just sits in her lap nice and quiet and lets her stroke her feathers.

Lost one of the Wheaten Marans chicks overnight. I suspected that may happen. When I was out checking on them before bed last night it was acting a bit off, sort of gasping. Everyone else in the brooder seems fine though.

We had one more hatch last night too, this one came out with some blood on it. Hadn't see that before. Need to clean it up before putting it in with the rest or he'll get picked on.

Must get back to working on the finishing touches on the coops today!

Huntress-good luck with the dog & I believe its a fungus that's on your tomato leaves (don't water at night anymore). Cut off as many of those leaves as possible and spray the rest with a 1/2milk & 1/2 water spray.
sorry cs, but this remedy might help with powdery mildew it certainly won't do anything to most other viral or bacterial disease,

please check the website I posted, there is a section with pics for identifying specific problems,,,,the big deal with late blight is that since showing up in WI 3 yrs ago it has put tho whole potato growing industry at risk,,,,,backyard gardeners are the main threat to getting the disease under control,,,,,,just sayin'
