Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

CC good point on the feed pan tipping over. Even a heavier pan doesn't always prevent it from happening. I use a heavy large plastic dog dish for my silkies and it has turned over on adult birds. They are to stupid to get out from under it.
Putting a large heavy rock in the middle of the pan I'm using for chicks.

CS good luck with the new house purchase. It is so exciting as well as nerve racking at the same time. I agree, you get writters cramps signing all of those papers.

TO now take your phone off the hook so you can enjoy the day and not get called in to work !!! lol

MLH go to Walmart and buy their Zinc lozenges, it is their generic for Cold-eeze. They really do cut down the length and symptoms of your cold it you start sucking on them as soon as you have any symptoms or signs that you might be getting sick. Might be to late now if you already are sick but wouldn't hurt to try. Even my niece who is a pharmacist says they work for her.

Oh and on the DH ET news. I called the pulm doc yesterday to get a 3 month supply of the prednisone and the nurse called me back. Said one of the three sputum (spit) test came back showing something. Said since he had two neg skin TB tests that most likely it isn't TB. Could be a contaminant !!!! Go figure. Said now they will test to see what type of ???? it is. Said if it is infection that being on Prednisone can make it worse since it weakens your immune system..... geez !!!
So we go back on the 15th for follow up and chest xray. Never a dull moment. No word on him going back to work yet !!!!!

He's back at the shop now finishing up our pontoon boat trailer. He said it should be done today. Wanna bet it isn't ????? lol It was suppose to be done by 4th of July when the family came up. Now I can't even afford bait to go fishing !!!

Oh well, time to get busy. Sluffed off the last few days not feeling well myself.

Have a good day everyone and Bigz......... So glad to hear your sight has improved !!!

MLH.... Feel better soon
Bigz... Glad you can see better
CS... Good luck with the house
Doc... I want some pickles
Jim... You are an evil evil man to keep talking about all the berries! I hope your fingers stay stained forever. (unless you send me jam... Then I hope you have stain free fingers)
CC... Umm, HI, you got any good food I can try to beg off you?
Terri... No mules for you! Not until you build another barn or something lol lol lol lol

(as I hear kids screaming and pounding each other... La la la... I can't hear them.... Just keep typing, may be they'll kill each other)

I have a silkie now with horrible crook neck. I guess I have to get a big bunch of vitamin E. I did make a neck brace for it. At least it helps some.

**** rabbits or someone ate the little of dill I had. Effers! My cucumbers I planted super late, in hopes I could do the canning in cooler weather. They are growing, a little crazy at the moment. Think I better do some thinning. Also tomatoes need more trimming back. I planted them too close together AGAIN. Every year I say I'll get it right this year. And then I do it all over again. Sigh.

I had a bigger cockerel butchered for dinner. What do you guys mean by dressed? Like "it weighed this much all dressed out?" I think I'm going to do the slow roasted for 5 hrs thing. I didn't do the whole soaking thing. I guess I will baste it while cooking, may be.

Time for lunches. I sure wish someone would make ME lunch....

lmao

Hello everyone. Hope you are all well! I have a few questions if any of you have the time-
I am having a fence installed for the chickens so they are able to roam in a bigger area. It's going to be a 4 1/2' ft fence lined with chicken wire. It is right by the milk house, and pretty much in the center of the farm. I was wondering if I need to worry about something eating them during the day, or if they are fairly safe considering the location? I will lock them into their coop/run at night. Do I need to plant any trees or shrubs or do they need anything else in there?
Also- I was reading in the article that French Toast posted (by the way thanks

) and it said to put organic matter on the floor of the run so that they can compost it. Am I supposed to throw scraps on the dirt? Won't it start to smell and attract animals? lol
Thanks-
Here is a picture of the area I am going to fence in

Have a great day everyone!

If you use chicken wire, consider your chickens predator dinner, especially if you put food scraps in there. All chicken wire is good for is keeping chickens out of your garden. It might as well be kleenex as far as a predator is concerned. You need welded wire. And you should always worry about something eating them during the day, or night. There aren't too terribly many coops or runs out there that are completely predator proof.

As far as food scraps go, I never feed my girls anything unless they can eat it up in 10 minutes or less. Otherwise, if it sits around, it will attract other critters, or bugs. IMHO

ETA: Super cute coop!

Way too much goes on with this board in a week. Overwhelmed trying to read it all. Finally at a airport with free wifi...so sucking it in while dh plucked the kids in front of a tv with cartoons. 10 hours between layovers and flying stinks. And a week without Internet is horrible. Will be glad to sleep in my own bed tonight. I am sure carol has done a wonderful job with the coop while we were gone. Then it is back to work, my overgrown garden and school registration along with a wedding for a cousin this weekend. I think I might need a vacation from my vacation!

Good early evening everyone! Welcome back Kristip! I hope you had a great time. I always feel that way after a vacation too...that's why I dont like to go!

What an adorable coop Judge! Who ever built it should go into business. I have a thought on your fence...if it is 4 1/2 feet high backed with wire then I assume it is going to be a wooden fence lined with wire? If this is what it will be I can guarantee that your chickens will hop up and sit on it! I have a few birds that go right over a 7' fence that I have...I think the best idea for you would be to get an electrified version from Premier 1. They cant sit on it, it sets up really easily and it keeps predators at bay. (at least the ones on the ground.) I would also recommend that you have some kind of cover in there for them...perhaps a small tree or bush? Of course it wont look so pretty in a little while cause they will eat everything inside that enclosure down until it is just dirt. I love to look at old pics of my chicken area...there was actual GRASS in it! Those of you who have seen it know what it's like now!

I dont worry too much about mine in the day because they have lots of cover...but it is a good idea to lock them inside at night even in the run is safe.

Did some gardening today and no one is here for dinner tonight! I am not sure if I will make what I had planned or just have some leftovers and some corn...maybe some beans and tomatoes too...I got a few onlions that reseeded themselves and pulled the garlic. I need to know how you guys dry it to make garlic powder? The cloves are way too little to peel for using fresh IMHO so I thought drying it might be easier?
I think I will go and check the garden map now and see which variety of potato I want to try...Amy--how are those heirlooms growing for you? I havent dug any yet but my plants look spectacular!

Later all! Terri O
