Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All!

Jim... Good boy! Always do what Annie tells you! You'll live much longer and be much happier that way! BTW... when is your anniversary? Seems like one should be coming up.

vicki... nice little tractor.... hope you get what you want for it. I was thinking about Stirfry... if she's still with us when you read this... maybe get her on some antibiotics... maybe it was a cyst that burst. In any case...

Amy... Congrats on your ribbons! Do we get A pic? Hope you and hubby had a good day.

Angi... funny video!

GR...I know what that "choosing" is like... had to pick up my meds today (for the month) Had to skip a couple of 'em for now

Good thing we have a freezer and I try to keep it stocked. I'm sure you've tried to do the same. Hope the old boy gets better!

MJoe! ... good to see you!

CC... why would you get flagged for posting a BYC link?

Bl4... looks like you (and hopefully) some more "pro" people, have to get some people to start singing! Maybe barrow a few nice hens and some chicks to take with when you get signatures!

Thanks all for the sympathy! I guess i just had to vent after a bad pain day,

Well, I walked today!

Not great, but ALLOT better than yesterday! When I went to close up the girls, I saw something I hadn't seen all summer.... BATS!
clap.gif
They were good to see... means things (weather) is getting better! They are so cool to watch. I was thinking how different they fly from birds...birds flap a few times and glide.... bats flap like he11 the whole time but it's so smooth you hardly see it! One of these days I want to build a bat house. I can put it in the back right by the compost pile.

Night All!

Morning everyone!
another cool, but not crispy, one this morning. StirFry is still with me!
hu.gif
???? I swear, if any of you had seen her, none of you would have given her any chance of lasting the night
idunno.gif
. When I cleaned the nestbox where she slept it was all full of yuch and just a bit of "rubber" egg shell but I don't know if that could have been there already???. Strange thing. She stayed in the nestbox that night and the other hens, instead of going to their usual spots, stayed on the roostbar right above her and kept peeking down. Next morning, she came out into the garden but went right under the bench and stood with her eyes closed. Still "leaking". Instead of picking on a weaker member, like you would kind of expect, my other 2 hens, Crockpot and Stirfry, seem to be protecting her! When she went under the bench, Soup stood right beside her for quite a while finally only drifting a few feet away with Crockpot hovering near by. When the other 2 started to move back toward the run, Stirfry started to follow and they waited for her. Later, I found them all cuddled together under the big collard plant in their run. They stayed with her the whole day. She rested, they rested, she moved, they moved. By the end of the day, she was looking, and walking, better and the "leaking" seemed to have slowed down appreciably and was starting to eat. Still had to rest a lot but was perkier when she was awake. Even came scooting with the rest when I took out some warm scrambled eggs before roost time. It was raining and cold later so I didn't open the coop to check if she was on the roost when I locked them in last night, (didn't want cold air on the baby

) but she was waiting by the door when I opened up this morning. I don't know what's going on, but I swear that silly hen must have 9 lives!!! I was just sitting and watching them for a while yesterday and realized, that she is my most gentle, sweet hen. Still not expecting miracles, but sure would be gratetful if I got one!

Cindlady~antibiotics, not a bad idea. Can't hurt at this point. Glad to hear you are doing a little better this morning! Never apologize for reaching out to us chicken folk, we're all family here right? (even us newbies
tongue.png
) I think most of us here can totally understand how dragging down pain can be sometimes. BTW~I agree about the bats!

congrats to everyone on the ribbons, etc. Way to go BL4, looking hopeful!

A new day, a warmer sun and the trees are starting to show color up here! Field full of Nighthawks yesterday and sky showing V's of geese this morning. Guess Fall is sneaking south folks!!!! Have a great one!

Meeting was interesting; they are going to discuss the ordinance change at the next ordinance meeting BUT it would be in our favor if we could provide the council with a list of signatures of residents in town who would like to see the ordinance changed. Our opposition provided a list of 80.... the one council member keeps making statements about how this is a waste of the City's time and this is a non-issue, they have more important things to worry about. The only reason this has even been brough before the Council is due to people getting caught breaking the ordinance.

I would like to ask her to abstain from voting.

The next ordinance meeting will be on September 11th, and the City Council will vote on the issue on the 24th.
Babylady4, What town or village/ town, city are you in? Good luck, I know a lot of people in the Wausau area are breaking the ordinances including myself and my neighbors.

good morning everyone,

Third time this week there was frost on the roofs. Been busy getting ready for school that starts in 3 weeks. The ladies have been doing well. My neighbor gave me a bunch of corn that she bought from a farmer, that doesn't taste sweet, so the ladies have been enjoying fresh corn everyday.

Still planning on getting more chicks this coming spring. I am wondering if incubating eggs is better than buying chicks? I have been pricing incubators and am finding I can get tons of chicks for the price of an incubator, even used. Although it would be neat to incubate my own. I also read that the hova bater brand seems to be better than little giants. Anyone have opinions.

I think I will remodel another ice shack and put it next to my exisiting coop. It will give me a fall winter project. Wish I lived in the country instead of a rural subdivison.

Morning all!
So, I totally missed my pace maker phone check yesterday! Ooooopps......So it got rescheduled to today..this morning in fact. Tomorrow Buddy Dog goes to the vet to check his blood to make sure his new arthritis meds are not hurting his liver. Since Duramaxx is no longer available we had to switch to another medication. I'm not looking forward to all the little dogs hitting the senior mark all at one time. It's enough with just the two bigger ones on older dog care. Although one is not old per se, he just has old dog joints. Thank Goodness for Ely. Oldest dog is fit as a fiddle.

The chickerdoodles and bunny rabbits are all good. This morning is a good day to be a rabbit here. They all got bunny approved lettus, sprouts, some parsley, and a slice of bread. Man they love bread! It's probably horrible for them but it's fun to see them all hop in circles of excitement when they get their bowl of goodies.

The Cats are doing something in the kitchen....I'm to afraid to go find out what. I got them collars from Petco the other day. They had a big table with all the styles that are discontinued so I got them small leather dog collars for a $1 each. I put them on and Bubba immediately had a temper tantrum like a 2 year old and Ichabod tried to kill me with his stare. He looked at me all defiant like and put a claw underneath the collar that clearly said "Oh yeah! Take this Mom! I cant get this collar off in a jiffy! Just you wait!" He then proceeded to flex his claw like he did with all the break away cat collars of the past and "Dang!!!! It won't come off!!!" He then proceeded to have a temper tantrum. After a few tries and many pouts latter and a few dogs caught in the cross fired of cat tempers, the cats gave in and now don't mind them. I even got matching pet tag for them. Not that they ever go outside but better safe then sorry. Bubs has a micro chip and Ichy is getting one next time he goes in for vaccinations.

Well, I best go see the damage in the kitchen and get the pace maker checker machine thing set up....Then on to errands!

Later

GR65-Sorry about your Boxer.

I hope that one he get some antibiotics that will help. Emmitt had an "insult" to his liver a few months back too. Never knew why. Went through all the tests like you, even checked for Lepto. Nothing...Did the antibiotics and he improved. I hope that happens with your pupster....

ETA:
David, I have both an LG and a Hova. I like my Hova better. I have the one with the window and the automatic temp control with humidity gauge. The LG is not a bad little bator for the price though. I guess it depends on how much you want to spend and how much you plan on using it. My LG is the basic type model found at TSC and F&F for like $35-45ish I think. I can't remember how much I got mine for. I think it was on sale for $34.99 My Hova is the Genesis 1588 that ran ~$150 ish. It is a much nicer bator.
The one down side to incubating eggs is that you will get roosters. So plan ahead to have an "outlet" of some form for them.

David I live in the itty bitty town of Weyauwega (pop 1900) where having chickens is believed to bankrupt the city, but having 4 full time police officers and 5 PT police officers is just dandy.

I am going to try and have some kind of education workshop at the Library or even downtown during Horse and Buggy Days on the 15th of September. Maybe that will get through to people that this is no big deal. I can't believe they crafted an ordinance allowing pot-bellied pigs without batting an eyelash, but allowing chickens in a town that used to have an egg company is taboo....

Vicki, I am so happy Stirfry is doing better!

she continues to improve!

Ok who are my artsy friends here. Need some advise on color. So I am doing a barn quilt for my coop. My coop is hulk green and 6 wide by 8 long( tried to find a color to blend in with the trees when we first built it). SO was going to do one big one but husband ripped the board into 2 so they are 2x2. Knowing that I have the pattern picked out and penciled inon the boards and now trying to find colors that look good for this. Here are the colors of Paint I have:

claret wine color (Darker)
Hunter green (darker)
subburst yellow (bright)
darker/brighter blue ( not navy, but not electric blue)
off white
black

So here are some ideas, someone else ut to do the different pairs of triangles as different colors instead of every triange.
Would you go bright or dark in outside background.
They will both be identicle except that in the middle square, one will have a stencil of a hen and one a roo. Depending on colors is dependent on picture color (aka if square is yellow, hen/roo might be wine colored)
Help with color thoughts. I could come up with a million color combos and DH is hopeless on colors. I want it to be bright enough to see from street, but not obnoxious.

A suggestion, You should ask the uw extentsion in your county to help with the presentation. Also there are seed company dealers that would be a good source of materials and knowledge.

As for the incubator, I would probably use it once or twice,so despite it being very fun to incubate, it probably isn't worth it

Morning....heading off to the dentist soon and then to pick up friend and horse to ride today...I like the one with the pink center best. It shows off the colors better I think. HTH...had to retape the quail's legs today...they splayed again after one day free. This time I will go for a couple days I guess.
I tried to get up the gumption to make more pickles this morning...didnt happen. Way too lazy and then a man came to buy roosters so here I am...LOL!
I hope everyone is feeling better today--it is gorgeous out there.
Well, I have to head out--have a great one all! TErriOwishingthedentistapptwasoveralready

(PS) nice to see you again Joe!

good morning, BL4 DING !!!! used to have an egg company in town ? Now I see the connection between it and the original ordinance.. competition .. that is SOP for large companies to eliminate the competition by having an ordinance put in.. can you go back to when the ordinance was installed and see who instigated it? No more egg company, no need for the ordinance..

I am up to 16 baby quail .. had set 36 eggs..

Kim, sorry the parts are not ready.. but this takes some of the pressure off me in getting all the pieces cleaned up..

I read up on installing the sleeves.. that should be a no brainer.. HeII, we got them out without knowing what we were doing, didn't we ??

Dora (formerly Nora) is coming into heat.. Annie locked her in the kennel.. It took Dora only a few minutes to dig her way out.. then Annie put the two pups in the large fenced in area of the black walnut grove.. they did not like that one bit.. but by sundown, they figured out how to get out of there.. I suspect they climbed over the 4 ft high chain link fence.. we want to skip this heat period for Dora to build up her body a bit more.. she got so thin, and still is not filled out.. If she gets PG by some twist of fate, I am going to have her aborted.. I wish they made an IUD for dogs.. maybe they do ? I will have to check upon that..

all the outside babies made it through their first night in the brooder.. It was not set as high as I would have liked, but they are OK.. I had one white keet jump out the door as I was feeding them.. He disappeared for several minutes.. I finally found him laying in the yard.. I thought he was dead.. He was all limp and cold.. I stuck him back under the brooder, and he revived..

Cind, ? I think.. I have all kinds of "new blood" with this hatch of keets.. these eggs were from Marlene..I have about 20+ keets out there.. I might sell a couple, but I need replacements for the ones that didn't make it through the summer.. I have about 9 left of the original 19..

I did a scrambled count of laying hens yesterday.. there are about 24.. we are getting about 19 eggs per day.. Marlene does not want to sell eggs anymore, so we have to get rid of them some other way.. Once the new pullets start to lay, we will make some drastic decisions..

OK got to go do some things outside.. bbl....
