Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Super tired....

I heard a silkie crow this morning. I guess I have at least one cockerel!

Pepper is missing. She's my black copper marans. She wasn't on the roost with her gal pal Lady. I called for her and got no response. I hope she's ok. She's a good chickie...

Oh no, Bigfam. That stinks! I hope she will be found safe & sound.

I'm super tired too. Just been dragged out the past few days, especially after 3 or 4pm.

Vicki, do you think Stirfry maybe squeezed too hard & broke an egg inside her? That would explain the blood, goo & rubbery egg shell fragment you found. I had a PR do that & her behavior afterward sounds exactly like Stirfry's. I gave her extra vitamins for a few days & kept her in a dark area so her body wouldn't want to keep producing eggs so she could heal, and she was fine after that. I'm glad she has such great friends that seem to be taking good care of her. Good luck to you both!

Sorry to all I missed, but my eyes are really getting tired. Might have something to do with the "interesting" morning I had out in ChickieTown. Definitely worthy of another thrilling installment of "As The Egg Turns".

Sweet dreams, all!

Took my in-laws supper tonight since they have been so kind to take in my ducks. As soon as we arrived we let the little buggars out of their pen and filled up their Mortar mix tub so they could get a much-needed bath! I think they were happy to get out and stretch; they were happily chasing bugs and nibbling on the lawn. I think I had them out for over 2 hours, so when it was time to put them back in their pen they went pretty easily.

Made BBQ pork roast in the crock pot, picked up some fresh bread from the scratch bakery in Amherst, and brought sweet corn, potatoes, and a few muskmelon from our Farmer John stand in Wega.

Ghost, I do believe you are not too far from me either. Problem is I have no room for a garden and as such I have no extra veggies. If I did I would gladly share with you. All I have are 6 tomato plants.

Heard from the Mayor of Waupaca (they changed their chicken ordinance a year or two ago without much fuss). I asked him if they have had any increase in costs to the city or an increase in complaints sine they implemented the change. He said they have had NO additional costs to the city and there have been LESS complaints since the ordinance was changed.

Now all I need are 160 signatures on petitions...... the opposition has collected 80 and I KNOW they are collecting more, so I would like to double or even better would be to triple the number of signatures we can collect asking for the change.

Better get to bed, work calls me away tomorrow!!!!!

Hi ALL!

Vicki... Strange how sometimes chickens will protect a weak one yet a week later they could be fighting over a nest spot. Allot like siblings!

Hope she keeps getting better!

kristi....Try it like the one in blocks but make every other arm green. Yellow background...blue & green arms, red center. Or Make blue &red arms with green center.

Bl4... I like oto's idea of contacting the UW extension for materials. May you could get a letter from the Mayor of Waupaca?

Amy... love the pics!

Mjoe.... There is a green thumbs up on the bottom right corner of each post.

TO.. glad you had a good day... in spite of the dentist.

BigZ... your hauling buckets reminded me....Bet I can do something with my new (from the bash) water bucket none of you others could do! With the bucket on the ground and the handle up... I can touch the handle without bending!

guess I got some reading to do.

Guess that's it.... night all!

Glad to hear stir fry is doing better. BF4...hope you find our sweet Marans.
Wish my veggies would take off one of thse yers. We have 6 tomato plants that are doing ok and some red pepper plants that have not given us anything yet, but I see some veggies growing on them. Corn flopped. A lot was rotten. Green beans ware my big saving grace. Will dig up my fingerling potatoes from the weed pit and see if they made it. Tried some in big pots and they did ok. Not great but ok.

On the chicken front I am loving those tiny pullet eggs from my two new layers. And carol swapped out that rooster baby and an ancient silkie she had given me that is so sweet, for and EE that we incubated at our house and thought was a roo...but turned out it wasn't. Her sister from th same hatch is my new blue egg layer so we are hoping she is too. and also this sweet 8 week old EE. It doesn't have tons of energy though which scares me. Likes to curl up and sleep when you pick it up. Hoping it will make it. Give it extra electrolytes and vitamins in its water. I can't think it's cold which is what I might think with a sleepy chick.

And my buff orp is broody again and I keep trimg to change its mind, DH would kill me if we had more chicks this fall. we are pretty maxed out for room. Although we have been acquiring more smaller breed or bantam birds, do they count as half right? Like my silkies... I have three hens and a roo, so that is 2 birds!

Anyway, off to the Madison zoo this morning with friends. Maybe a picnic lunch.
Just heard the roo crow... It is 5:45....think that is his wake up time. Hope it is not ticking off the neighbors...don't know if they can hear him...

Angie, thanks for the offer but I can't have roosters and I have my heart set on more silver laced wyandottes. I have one, thanks to dr. Ha ha and she is my favorite, my others are golden comets, from tracker supply, nice layers and fairly friendly too.
I have some SLWs if you want eggs from them next spring.

I have one pullet and 3 SLW roos at this point

Morning! Had to post before DrH.

I have gotten info from the UW-Extension. Our Fair is going on this week, so I hope to catch the extension folks AND the area 4-H leaders and get them on board for support. This is becoming such a hassle...... I know darn well that the guy who wanted his pot-bellied pig did not have to jump through hoops like this.

Off to work!

good AM

yesterday we finally got our first pullet egg.. I hope we are "off to the races" with them.. there must be 50 pullets back there in that pen.. ?? will do a quickie head count one of these days..
this one was smart enough to go to the "hidden" nest under the lean to..

I think I got into some poison oak.. I have itchy areas on my belly , back and under arms.. and today the areas have developed bumps.. I got some lotion from Walgreen's which seems to help with the itch.. I will give it one more day before I head into the W I clinic.. I think I contacted the P O from the caked on dust and dirt from the tractor parts.. who knows where that tractor has been in 57 years.. and P O oil doesn't dissipate .. I am quite sure it is not poison ivey, I can pull that out with my bare hands..

Cind, if you were any shorter, you could touch the GROUND without bending over.. sorry, couldn't help myself..

I ended up with 17 quail out of 36 eggs.. not as good as you, Joe.. I am OK with it,, I will have a good start on my new flock.. and now I have mixed bloodlines.. I just wish I could freerange them with the chickens..

the new chicks/keets outside are doing OK,, I finally got the brooder temps to settle down.. I had to take one of the roosts out so that I could turn the brooder 90* .. Now I can look under it and check on the status of the young birds..

I think I will go to the steam show on Friday.. they are going to have an auction of just farm equipment and farm related things.. somehow an outboard motor qualifies.. the auction starts at 11 AM...

I tried out my new hone on an old cylinder sleeve.. It works great.. and I learned you cannot run it backwards (counter clock wise) .. the head unscrews and the whole thing falls apart..

I checked the sleeves for protrusion above the block surface.. they are all perfect.. this prolly is interesting to only me and Adam...

I have to go to the auto supply place and get some "O" ring sealant.. Kind of redundant, but that is what the instructions call for.. we do not need any surprise leaks, do we ?

OK, starting to itch again.. maybe I will check out the W I clinic this AM..

Morning all!
All the critters and I do mean all of them! are amped up! The dogs are wild and the chickens are silly and the Does all tried to stage an escape when I opened up their pen door o get their feed bowls. Luckily only Beatrice made it through my foot block. She then roamed around the basement and I caught her on her way to check out the electrical cord to the freezer....Stupid rabbit....Stuffed her back in the pen and gave them their food.

At least Elvis was behaved....

Other then that, have a big fun day of laundry planned....

So, I'm thinking about getting a new sewing machine. I had an old Singer that I though made the trip from when we left Cali, but it did not. So, any one have a sewing machine to recommend? It's been many years since I've sewed so, I'm back into beginner stuff. I used to sew all sorts of things but have probably forgotten more then I remember!! Thanks for any tips!!!

Jim-sorry to hear about your poison oak issue.....
