Gorgeous day outside!
I just got finished cleaning all the brooders for the morning (gosh, those Calls
are getting big, aren't they
babylady4?). I have the four new Runner ducklings that hatched yesterday moved into their own little brooder - I got 1 boy and 4 girls! First hatch this year where I actually got more girls than boys! I lost three eggs that died without pipping though - candled them this morning, and they look funky and have no movement.
The humidity's good, the temperature's good, and the ducklings that do hatch are all incredibly strong, so I'm sort of puzzled as to why I keep losing ducklings that are alive and moving around in the egg when I move them into the hatcher - the hathcer is getting scrubbed out well with bleach in between each hatch.
Anyways, I was looking all the ducklings over this morning to make sure everyone looks healthy and is growing (6 of the Runners are being picked up on Friday), and the little Calls are getting tail feathers! BLUE feathers!
I wasn't sure if these babies would be Blue Pied or Blue Fawn Pied - I was
really crossing my fingers for just plain Blue...and the feathers that are coming in are the prettiest powder blue! I'll finally have some blue (well, Blue
Pied...) ducks in the flock!
Now I'm just crossing my fingers that at least one of them is a girl! I want more White Calls, and these babies had a White mamma, so they
should be carrying a copy of the recessive white gene, and
should produce a percentage of white ducklings if bred to my white drake.
