Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi all, there is an organic place near Eagle RIver,, and a large farm near me can order organic feed for you when he puts in his order Iif he still orders, that is) It has been many years since I talked to them.... on my old computor I had the addy of the one near E>R> lost it in the transfer of data..

I would stay away from mills for ordering for you.. they will tack on t heir % for their trouble.. the shlt is high priced enough..

check on craig's list.. that is where I found the place up nort.. farm & garden.

the saga of tractor parts continues.. the Jack arse did not run the order through on Wed.. Annie called them this AM and found that out.. then she became relentless and gave them the what- fors.. he said that it was his fault, but it still is costing ME extra $$ for overnight shipping.. It had better be here on Sat, or they are going to get my dose of what-for..Bass Doo Doo's..

Kim and Adam will put off coming until the parts are actually in my pudgy little hands..

OK, I am off to do something, even if it's wrong.....

Hey Everyone,

I am still having a hard time finding a decent feed source for my chickens in southeast Wisconsin. I thinking about making my own feed using organic grains if possible but I haven't turned anything up in two days of searching the internet. Anybody have any ideas for organic food sources or places to buy bulk grain in the Milwaukee area (or anywhere near it)? Apparantly feed mills aren't very easy to come by anymore and I am not sure if they even carry organic or non-gmo grains to begin with.

Any ideas would be great!

P.S. Fleet Farm carries Sprout Chick Starter/Grower but I can't find any information about who makes it or where it comes from. If anyone knows about this let me know!

Thanks!

Fleets food is a Cargill product, open ended product, meaning that it is never the exact same and it surely is not organic, not a horrible feed though, I do use it when I can get it cheaper than the Mills prices, as in on sale its about 2 or 3 bucks per 50# cheaper. I just read on the Welsummer thread, that Snowbird has been feeding his own mix for over 50 years to the tune of 2000 lbs or more a month, his feed recipe is quite good if ya ask me, but what do I know, next to nothing to his 50+ years experience. I'm going to try it if my Mill can come up with the ingredients. this is his mix and will have to be cut down to what ya need...... and please remember chickens are omnivores for those squeamish guys out there, not much difference in bugs verses meat, except you can get this kinda protein all winter, I have read many places about ppl feeding there chickens hamburger..... SO here it is.
200# Meat scraps
1000# cracked or rolled corn
400#soy bean meal
100# alfalfa meal
300# oats
it figures out to 20 or 22% protein recommended for exhibition stock I have read........ if ya want to read more about it check out the Wellie thread, it was posted a few days back....... Kim

Vic I'm with ya on ripping out the cukes. I too used up all my give away people. Maters are real close to going to the compost pile. Hope all your cans seal!
fl.gif
Kris I just heard of someone paying a buck a qt for cukes wish I could find someone to take the rest of ours. Got a very unexpected surprise on the mower tire. Took it out there and dropped it right at the shop owners feet. Told him the first tire upset me and now I'm PO'd. He gave me a new one off the shelf supposedly the new and improved rim. We'll see.

DR>H glad they did the right thing, I had the same problem with our small trailer, brand new lost both tires in less than a year, they just popped open and leaked. GGRRRRRRRR the way they make stuff these days, and as Jim found out the way they advertise stuff as well, just make me ill.........arggghhh could chew someones head off, just haven't yet found out who to chew on............

So yuppers we will be staying home this weekend canning the 150+ lbs of them of them tomatoes I picked this morning, man I haven't had nice mators like this in some time, I will have to post a picture......... I'm also gonna make the Candied Jalapeno peppers, and try some canned sweet peppers, the rest will go in the freezer.........to use as fresh.or for end of season salsa with the last of the tomatoes. I had lots of cucs gals too but we ate em all or I made relish, 1 batch of sweet relish 1 batch of dill, total 16 half pints and 6 pints... alot of cuc's because I seed mine before cutting them up these the chickies get ........ LOL I'm gonna try with the last of em some dill pickles suppose to taste like clausen pickles will see..............if they do I'll post the recipe for anyone who wants to try em.......

FT glad Cody is doing well, about time that poor boy gets to eat............
Well off to the store need lemon juice for all these Mators.later folks have a grand day.
PPS Bugsy is still eating and acting alot more like his old self.......... Kim

Afternoon all!
Just thought I'd check in since I'm not sure I'll be back later today. Baked some cookies (from scratch no less!) and just sitting a minute before I have to do some more chores. I need to go get Saxon's food at the vet's then I need to set up the brooder. Apparently I am unable to say NO to chicks. I started with a resounding NO MORE CHICKS!! Then thought of those little cute fuzz butts. So, DH is bringing 6 broilers home. Geez I need an intervention.... *sigh*. I think I'll have another cookie to fortify myself.....mmmmm.....cookie.....

The critters are all fine and dandy. Hot but dandy. SG is broody. We are currently arguing over her need to hatch out a wooden chick. She has collected all the wooden dummy eggs I had in the nest boxes and is setting on those. I need to stuff her butt in a cage....Argh....she is one of the broodiest Asil's I've ever had....

Get to fishin' Girl.....times awastin'.....You know because of the ....S---W....See refrained on that one....I wasn't completely raised in a barn....just mostly.....

3Acres-Kim is correct.Sprout is made for F&F (both varieties) by Cargill and she is also correct it is an "open formula". Closed formulas as better. There is a new chicken store in Paoli called Cluck. She carries organic feed but I can't remember who it's made by. I think it's local to Wisconsin though. Modesto Milling outta California is the only organic mill that I can think of.

WCc-Yes. DH was telling me that the corn is loaded with micotoxins due to the drought. Even the cattle cannot eat it.

BigFam-Yes I saw MPC had Cream Legbar hatching eggs. I'm not going to spend $75 for 6 eggs or $120 for 12. Just not worth the risk at those prices.

All right best get myself gone.....now that I sat down I don't want to get up....maybe if I enjoy another cookie that will help.....

ETA: Meant to tell Kim that I'm really glad Bugs is better....That is great news!

took it easy today, (again) I did some more reading in my tractor repair manual.. I learned a few good things,, but what I specifically was looking for wasn't in the bookll SO, I went and looked at the engine block, and within a few seconds I found what I needed.. there , just in front of the distributor, was a brass fitting.. looked like the remnants of the old heat sensor.. Yup. as long as the new sensor is no more than 2 inches long, Houston;; we have a hole..

tomorrow I will go to an auto parts store and see if they can match my old water temp guage for diameter...

Annie started a venison stew with lots of garden stock tossed in.. everything fresh.. It is smelling soooo good in here right now.. I have to boil up a few Kluski noodles..

the guineas are about done hatching.. got barely 50% I'm estimating.. will do a head count when I toss the rest of the eggs..

I was reading my book in my chair under the shade tree.. the birds had to come and check me out.. at one point I had 10 guineas standing in a semi-circle within 3 feet of me.. one goose was tugging at my shoe and another was pulling on my pants pocket and pulling the hairs on my arm.. I really should carry a camera with me, eh??..

the last guinea pig died today.. Ken was not too upset, .. what a week he is having,, first his dog, now his last pig,, and Tommy is not near death, but he has a very sore foot-leg-hip.. we tackled him , but couldn't pinpoint what ailes him..

Good beautiful evening everyone

that's it, I did it! Cuke plants went bye bye!!! The toms get about another 3 or 4 days and they are following. I don't have any room left in my pantry closet and I'm almost out of jars. A couple good batches of marinara and I'm done. Bought extra cases this year but I got "raided" extra heavy by the kids this year. My daughter and family came up for a visit this year with the boat and the boat was full of my canning by the time they left. "But mom we love your pickles", "oooh, you have extra apple butter", is that_____?"
droolin.gif
Next year I have to ban them from that room!

Can't throw anything more in the freezers either. They are almost topped off but I still have to save room for the venison. Hubby already has his extra doe permit and we sure need it. Not getting even one last year (first time in almost 20) really hurt. I really miss my deer. I rationed out what was left from the year before but freezer burn finally got the last of it and the girls and puppy got a boiled protein treat. All that is but one last tenderloin that I've been saving (a gift from a son) for the end of garden stirfry

.

Jim~that stew sounds yummy. Good idea for tomorrow! I have a big head of cheddar cauliflower, zukes and other goodies in the fridge waiting to be used. Except I always make my own noodles!

QUESTION~has anyone tried any of the feather picking products out there? Is there a spray I can put on the other girls butts? Anyone tried the blinkers? Think I mentioned before my top hen, Soup, won't leave anyone else's butt feathers alone. They are all finally getting their feathers to come back in but she's pulling their butt feathers out as fast as they pop out. GRRRRRRRRR! She's the only one that does it. There's no protein lack. I think with her it's just a dominance thing. The chick has no feathers she can get too yet so she just takes away any yummy that mom finds to give it whenever she can, chasing the poor baby down!
smack.gif
She even tries, I said tries, to challenge me once in a while. I half hope the chick turns out to be a roo. It would serve her right!

Hey all--just thought I'd pop in....last night was loooong with my client and now my son has moved home too--anyone "need" a 23 year old? ( I am not really looking forward to this stint in my life) I have amagnet on my fridge that says: "I raised my kids; now it's time to raise some hell!" Unfortunately they keep coming back home! I know you know what I mean Cind!
I had 60 posts to read so I am not up to speed so I cant comment...I did, however take some picks that I would like to share. Some are the new hatchlings (just cause everyone likes to see the new fuzzies) and the others are of my ground cherries to see if we are talking about the same plant here!
OK first the babies: sorry...dont know how this one got in here...this is the champion at the fair...

And now Tommy cause I forgot I took this pic!!!!!

ANd now, finally, ground cherries:

So...is this the plant that you all have been talking about? I ate one today whole taking pics and it was good but didnt really have much of a taste? Are we talking about hte same plant or do you guys have some type of Hybrid? I have these ALL OVER the farm this year...if they are the same what can I make out of them?

THanks--now back to reading.....TerriOwhoisalloutofsortsfrombeinggonetwodays!
