Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good early eve, .,

i worked on Ollie this afternoon.. I got the exhaust system all back on.. makes Ollie sound tough..

I tried making a new alternator adjustment bar,, It turned out not good, so I reworkes the exixting one and made things work better.. I couldn't make the bar any longer because then the v-belt would have rubbed on the bottom radiator hose..

Annie hit a bonanza at the bread store.. they had way too much left over bread, so she took 18 bags of it.. her car is packed full and DD#1 van has the extra bags

I saw the young tom going for a piggy back ride on a hen today, so eggs will be forthcoming soon..

It is a muddy mess around the coops. at this point, I will not be too unhappy if the temperature drops enough to freeze the ground until spring...

I need a lead on a good barred rock rooster.. anybody ?

.....jimjusttakingiteasytonight..

eta: Annie picked up the fixings for the Bailey"s.. I think I am going to mix a batch tonight..

Fish Fry Friday To All.....Happy Birthday Terri, hope you enjoy many more!

Kinda interesting about the golden laced wyandottes...they were developed from a partidge cochin/brown leghorn cross rooster and a silver laced wyandotte hen...the golden laced are also known as winnebagos. I was looking at them years ago. I decided to go with the light brahmas instead. They are huge birds and very docile nice birds also.

Really poured here yesterday. I needed to spread a 5gal pail of ashes on the driveway this morning to be able to drive down the hill.

Aldi's had some nice cantaloupe for 1.29 each...nice mellons. I don't like most stores that charge that much per lb....gosh, one can get three mellons at Aldi's for the price of one at those places.

Terri, I will NEVER forget your birthday; it is the same day as my brother's!!!!

Vicki you really MUST join us at the bash! You will fit right in with the rest of us!

Freezing rain the morning and pea soup fog tonight! I hope it clears out early, I have to head in at the bight and early hour of 4 AM (when Carol is doing all of her posting...) blech.... I love sleeping and hate getting up early. I am hoping I will at least be able to get the heck out of there by noon.

Made beef roast in the crock pot tonight. Started it this morning so it is super tender.... tossed in the usual onions, carrots, celery, mushrooms, carrots, and potatoes. A little wine to tenderize and a touch of garlic..... yum, yum, yum!

Time for me to go to bed..... maybe another glass of vino will help....

Hi... Buried in autism stuff. Not only do I have less time to come on here, but less motivation. Much easier to share and be cheery when you ARE light hearted.

I think I have a broody. Well, this is her first day sitting in the nesting box for no good reason. I don't really mind if she wants to hatch eggs, so I won't be breaking her brood. I guess I'll just wait and see if she sticks. How long do I leave her sit before I know she means it? This happens to be Matilda my Australorp. I guess I should look up and see if they are a broody lot...

Happy birthday Terri! Sorry, puppy comes home tomorrow, not on your actual birthday. I can keep his name Shadow instead of changing it to Terri. ;)

As you know chickens are a bit crazy..sometimes they will set a nest forever and never get off , and other times the crazy birds set it for two weeks and quit.

Good Morning folks,

slippery in the north country!

a bit of catching up done yesterday,,,

bird report; getting about 20 eggs a day from the layers, 4-5 pullet eggs from the 7 Ameraucana girls, lost one of the Marans roos last week at least it was the #2 choice surprisingly enough. This weekend plan is to get a pen together in the old coop and stick the BCM pullets together with the Olive egger cockerel I posted the picture of. Get some olive egger eggs going and in the bator asap. The next plan is to setup a brooder area in the GH, I have the materials needed just have to put things together. I figure this will afford me a practice hatch with the Sportsman and provide some pullets that will add to the egg color here early summer.

judge, good idea doing a practice run, also a good idea getting that turner, FF has them on line and on the shelves. I think we are using the same source for the Chant eggs, I'm really looking forward to giving this breed a shot here. I plan to get a couple dozen the end of Feb if all goes well. btw, get Jim's instructions he's the "hatch master"

My Ameraucana birds are doing well, the Meredith birds grew slow but have now a much better size and are looking good, the 3 pullets from the "peachick" line are laying the really nice robin's egg blue as hoped. These birds are smaller and need work if someone planned to show them. Hopefully adding the genetics from Wayne's line will work to do that and yet keep the vibrant egg color

You won't be sorry about the chickens. They are such a neat bird! Good luck- can't wait to hear how they turn out for you. Glad that eggs are available- I would be sad if the breed died out.

Quote: yupsir. I had/might still have one who had a mullet hair do.. she would steal a nest, or start a nest, but never set for more than 2 days.. come to think of it, I haven't seen her for awhile..
I might have sent her to freezer camp..

I would set any egg in front of yours.. do not put it under her.. if she pulls it in.. let her sit on it for a day or two.. If she is still sitting, take that egg away and give her some "real" eggs.. mark the ones you set under her so when you check for volunteer eggs, you will know which ones to leave..

I must agree. My first broody, Alice, was an Aussie. She had us so excited, but neither of us was quite sure if she would stick it out. So, bless his heart, DH talked me into getting a bator, "just in case". Luckily we didn't need it, but it sure has come in handy since then.

Good luck with your broody. They are the absolute best for raising chicks.

At 4 to 5 days before hatch, if not sooner, put her into your brooder area so she can raise the chicks in peace. Good luck!
