You guys REALLY need for spring to get here, eh?????

Of course. That's Daisy Duke-wearing weather! And you wouldn't want to see Bigfam freezing her ta-tas off in this kind of weather, would you?

Sorry about the callous egg sellers, Del. I hope you will make sure to make a note of who they are in your hatching journal. My orps don't seem to care much for the snow. Chickens!

Congrats again, Bigfam!
I had a feeling you'd enlighten us, Dan.

Ugh- wanted to go back outside to do a few things, but i guess not. Snow and ice and thunder and lightening. Nice. Hope the power doesn't go out or all the time incubating eggs will be wasted

Hi Everyone, I am new here...I live in Central WI and my family and I are wanting to start a backyard flock. We are able to have 8 hens according to our ordinances.

I am wondering if anyone here sells chicks, and what kind. I am looking for docile birds, some that are good layers. I am also looking for any ideas for a coop and a run. I do know the basics, such as how many sq ft/hen in the coop and the run.

Some questions I do have is what do you all feed them? What brand of feed? What do you feed when they are chicks? etc. I have more questions but cannot think of them all right now.

I would appreciate any feedback that you can give me.

Thanks in advance!!!
Amber

Welcome Amber!

Were about are you? I'm close to Wausau and will have chicks for sale off and on now through spring/summer. I have some blue/black/splash orpington chicks right now and more hatching in about a week.

For me, using a garden shed was a great and easy start for a coop. Used a chain link kennel for their attached run.

Do you have any size limits or requirements on the coop in the ordinances?

I like the Nurtena brand of feeds personally. All brands will have different feeds for chicks, layers, and meat birds among others. Look for a local feed store or Fleet Farm to get your supplies.

Any other questions just ask! Lots of great people here with many years of chicken experience that will be glad to help!

jvls1942 - Thanks! I will be asking LOTS of questions :)

Casie D - I am also near Wausau....Kronenwetter to be exact:) I may be interested in chicks from you :) I am sooo excited!!!! How much do you charge per chick??

Lots of people sell chicks here, so you shouldn't have any problems finding what you want. You should research breeds & decide for yourself what kinds you would like, and there are lots of things to consider. Is egg color important? Do you want large fowl, I'm assuming? They lay different sizes & colors of eggs. If you don't plan on eating your birds, I would suggest getting heritage breed birds, as opposed to sex-linked or "production" types. Heritage breeds lay longer, whereas production breeds lay a ton of eggs in a short period of time & then peter out. In my experience, anyway. I will post some links on where to get some good info, as I'm sure others will also. Get on the mailing lists for hatcheries so they will send you their catalogs. That will help you get an idea of some of the different breeds out there.

This one has a great article for raising chicks:

Amber, I'm out between Marathon and Edgar. Glad to hear you can have chickens by you! We are in the county so no worries about rules here, thank goodness!

Sending you a PM on the chicks.
