Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

thank you Zeke, for the condolences..

Judge,, I had to re read your post.. is your FIL really short enough to fit into a calf hutch ? WOW !!

TerriO, it has been at least 2 years since I was at BD,, we met at "the sign",, I will not go to BD again.. it is too far for me..

I do like to go to the BASH though.. I will keep trying to make it as long as it is at the church camp..

I have 5 more guinea eggs for the bator,, and 2 goose eggs..

I will not set any more until maybe friday or this weekend.. I want to try to keep about a week between hatches.. I have orders for 35 keets from C List..

Annie found a bator base in the garage.. I forgot it was there.. the chickens have it about half pecked away..

.......jiminwisc........

I think you could easily make a new bator base out of the foil faced foam insulation found at your local building supply, foil tape alittle measuring should do it

You are caught between a rock and a hard spot.. You have to lessen the shock for your friend..

the next time she picks up eggs, tell her about the cost of feed.. and then tell her that the next time she gets eggs, they will still be $2.oo/dz . but there after, you will have to get $2.5o/dz or you will have to reduce your flock to just cover your family's needs.. a good friend should understand.. if not, then let her find a new source.. don't beg,, and don't act as if you are asking for the moon.. just state the facts m'am and don't dwell upon it.. If you let on that the price is high, she will pick up on that in an instant..

we sell a few eggs and we get 2.50dz any real friend should be o k with it I think jims advice is great. no need to feel guiulty. you shouldn t have to loose money to keep a friend good luck.

Welcome to the group zeke..you and your wife should stop by the get together!!

kris I sell all the eggs that I get for $3/doz, there are others in this area that are at $2.50 and thinking they should raise

I would explain to that friend the your situation, if you check prices in the store all except the "factory eggs" that are used as loss leaders are all over $2.50,,,,,here Roundy's have a branded brown egg they are selling for $4.50+

good luck
THIS. I went from $2.50 to $3 a dozen maybe 6 months ago. I sell to friends, no one batted an eye. They understand when feed prices go up, everything has to go up. We live in farm country, so most people get it. Besides, backyard eggs are always better than those tasteless orbs from the store they call eggs.

Judge, that looks like a single comb to me, maybe it's the angle in the pic. Rosecombs look like a big bumpy mass.
My favorite sign from 2012..... a guy/or gal...advertising "organic" firewood for sale.
Well, that tops the 'organic' maple syrup I see in the store.

Zeke, nice to see you here and learn a bit about ya! Welcome!

hey zeke, interesting info, when I first saw eldorado on your header it brought back memories

in the early '70's I spent a lot of days hunting that area, started with snow geese at the marsh right behind the school. Then over a few years I got to know a few farmers in the area, used to get permission to train dogs during the summer on pheasants, hunted their land in the fall,,,,yup,,,good ole memories,,good dogs, good times for the hunters

the names escape me now, but nice folks in that area

good to see new folks in the group

Jim eggs are usually sold by the dozen,,,where did you pull 100 from?

Ok... I already forgot who else has the horrible runs with their kiddo. But rotavirus is exactly what I think Halden has. Cross fingers... No squirts today yet!!! But I have done no dairy today. It's incredible hard to do with him because he only eats mostly dairy...

thanks again TerriO for the Bator drop off. Now I've got to pick up an egg turner!!!

Mel, glad to hear Runt is doing pretty good. Ugh! I hate to have to force feed a cat.

Jim, sorry to hear about the troubles with mom's grave & the loss of your "job". I wonder if that guy would have the nerve to call you if he screws it up again? I have 2 BO hens, but no roo. I've got extra lav roos. Want some?

Cind, so sorry to hear about the bad eve. I hope the skunk smell dissipates quick. They aren't a threat to your flock. They are opportunistic feeders where they will eat what they find, but they wouldn't kill an adult chicken. A chick is another story, and eggs. I had a skunk living in my coop one winter. All he did was eat their feed.

Pretty pic, Judge! And cute babies too!

Kristi, my DH has been selling eggs for me where he works for quite a while now. Because of the drought & higher feed prices last fall, we upped the price from $2.50 to $3 a dozen. All but 1 customer completely understood, mostly thanks to all the news reports every day saying how prices of this, that and the other thing were increasing. So we took advantage of the timing and explained that the feed prices had jumped, which they had. But since we really appreciate all our repeat customers, we do sometimes sell them at 2 for $5 if they buy 2 right away. So far, everyone has been extremely understanding about the whole thing. We even had one woman who insisted on paying $3 before we increased the price. She said they were worth it.

You do have to take into consideration that different parts of the state (or country) will have varying prices too. Out in the country or up north, the eggs will be much cheaper since it is more likely that a lot of people will have their own flocks. The closer you get to bigger cities, the more money you can ask for them. Out where I live, people are asking $2.50 to $3. In Milwaukee, you can easily get $3. We have friends in the Chicago area who are paying $4. So Dan, that friend of yours will prolly make a nice profit off your eggs.

So glad to meet you, Zeke, and no worries about bad typing. We all do that from time to time. We can usually figure it out.
