Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I'm going to go look at incubators. Not "for sure" that I'll come home with one, but a lot of people are incouraging me to do so and to try my first couple of hatches out first for practice before ordering expensive eggs on rare breeds b/c so much can go wrong. Does anyone have any hatching eggs for sale? If so, what kind and how much? I'm just looking at a smaller, more affordable incubator to start out with. I can't drop $350-700 right now, as I've heard prices can range pretty good dependingo n what all you get. I've also heard you can get a name brand one for $149 on sale - but it only holds 7 eggs??? Really??? My friend told me a few weeks ago she got one at Farm & Fleet for only $45 ($30 more for the auto rotate) and it hold 48 eggs or 41 with the rotator in it. Okay, yeah, I realize you can't always buy the cheapest model out there and I realize you get what you pay for. But I'm just giving an example. A 7-egg one for $150 on sale vs a 48 egg one for $45??? Who wouldn't try to get something cheaper when you compare it like that? Know what I mean? I've no clue what kind it is, if it'll work, or if I'll hve constant problems with it, but if they have better ones that are $100-150 I'm willing to get a better one. But to be honest, I wouldn't know a better one if it was staring me in the face. It's all a toss of the dice for me since I've never done this before.
Investing in a good incubator is worth every penny. I have the Genesis Hovabator and Little Giant. I would buy the Genesis again. I have egg turners and forced air in all of them. I also have digital meters that are accurate and not part of the machines. I have not found an incubator yet that has accurate meters. I also dry hatch to internal pip.

Way off topic...Do hens usually start moulting this time of year> Trying to figure out if its all the lovin' from the roos or if the hens are starting to moult!!
(I am getting ready to order aprons for their backs as I have so many that are bare-and sad to say they almost all need one-got me to thinking maybe they are starting to moult) 2 roos to 21 hens right now and 4 more hens growing up. geez boys
Hens can moult anytime there first full moult. It depends when they were hatched. If your hens here hatched last year early and they did not moult they might be moulting now. I have a bare girl myself. She was an early hatch and this is her first moult. It does not help that the cockerel is a young cockerel and she is his favorite and he can't seem to go more than 10 minutes with out giving her attention. It is that time of year and hormones in young cockerels is at the highest to insure fertility. They just can't help it.
Speaking of rooster spurs - do any of you take them off or file them down? I've been reading about the various methods and I'm wondering what you all do.

I caught a spur from a mad rooster once - don't want to ever do that again!

We now have a severe thunderstorm warning around here. Good thing I did the trimming this morning!
I remove them with pliers. They pop right off with little to no blood.
Well Jim you can not possibly stay ome and come to the bash If Big Z is refused I will be there sometime Friday Morning.......hehehe I do know where ya live so that isn't even an issue...........
anyway chicks are doing good got a couple pictures to upload shortly, still have found no hay, crappy hay I called about a few days ago has been bought up. Then some lady bought a barn had 150 bales she was giving away posted it at 6;30 this morning by 8 am when I called her voice mail box was full......her adds came down at 9am... everyone must be going nuts like me trying to find hay..........I drove to every farm in our immediate area, this morning asking for hay, no one has any.......... so I guess my horses are just gonna have to tough it out in there field and there complete feed will have to get increased to 3 feedings a day......that's all I can do......... so ANYWAY BRB with pictures............Kim

cute chicks!! I have them popping out of the eggs too..They are due tomorrow and I have 7 out..maybe 8. Two pips. no duck pips yet..

Wildsam: Hmm the "AngieBubs" is just a screenname from a long long time ago LOL My real name is "Judi". However, I am German (Along with English, Irish, Swiss, Norwegian LOL True American mutt)

BigZio: Thanks for the update-any preference on the golf courses?

GHostRider: What breeds are the chicks?

Had my first tick of the seasona nd am sooo grossed up and feel like my skinis crawling. I am thinking I got it from one of the chickens that ws running around in the field/pasture...as I wasnt out of the yard at all. I know that chickens will eat ticks-if a tick attaches to a chicken will they pull it off? Or do I now have to figure out a way to start checking the chickens for ticks?????

CC, I already sold the lady six of my chicks, so I'm sure she'll get a lavender rooster out of it. I told her to go buy some chicks from another breeder I know and breed them with mine. I'm not sure why she wants my pair so bad. Maybe because the hen is lavender mottled? I told her I'd consider getting rid of them in a month.
