Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

One last rant/question about my horse. Yesterday he ripped the top off of my rabbit cage. I went out and tried to get the rabbit before it got away and to try to stop him from doing any more damage. I led him away, he came back. I whipped him with the lead rope, he didn't care. I waved a 2x4 at him, he came towards it. He had issues with being tied, and if I put him in the pasture alone he freaks out that's why I didn't do any if those things. I brought the whip into the pasture the other day to try to get him to stay away from me while I put fences around the trees he was eating. The other horse ran at the sight of it, he tried to chew on it. I even swished it back and forth behind me when I walked and he was still so close that he was getting hit I'm the face. I have had people (like my ferrier) comment on how desnsitized he is. Seems to be that the only thing he is afraid of is a good electric shock. Is it possible for a horse to be TOO desensitized? Or maybe he's just a little slow mentally?

Do you know what kind of training he had if any before you got him? How old is he?
I think he is getting mixed signals. It is actually a good thing that he is curious about things. He would be a fun horse to do Parelli with. He does need to learn to respect your space but whipping is not how to do it. (I know you aren't beating him just using the word whip because you are using a whip)
Like LMiller said in an ealier post he need a rope halter and a lead line. I would seriously look up Pat Parelli and the 7 games. It is miraculus (sp) in the difference it made in my horse.
You want to communicate with them thru body language. You might want to look to see if there is a natural horsemanship trainer in your area. Maybe have someone come give you lessons and they can get this boy a bit more respectful. You don't want them to fear you , you want them to look to you as their leader. Don't give up to soon. Once you get him to respect you and look to you as his leader you will have a friend for life !! Maybe there is someone out that way that has horse experience but doesn't own a horse that could help you. Just make sure you have them sign a release form for liability.

I have no idea what his training was. I've tried to track down the original owner and haven't had any success. He definitely does not respect personal space. I watched a training video that showed a ground exercise involving a whip. Where you have the horses on a lead in front of you and wave the whip back and forth to teach them to back up and stay out of your space. He'll just get hit in the legs or face and not move. He steals the ferriers tools out of her Bucket We have to be careful when cutting anything with a chainsaw in his pasture because he'll be right there. He needs a job, he is obviouly very bored. Our vet does team penning and really liked him when she came and looked at him. She said I should ask at least $2000 for him. Maybe next time she comes out I'll tell her he's for sale for much less than that. She might know someone looking for a huge horse that doesn't spook and can move fast.

Hi all!
Well one of my broodys broke, and I didn't even do anything special. She was one of my back sex links.
Judge: One of my bantam Wyandottes went broody just after my Delaware (about three weeks ago). We didn't really want to deal with two broodys since we are so new at this. We pull eggs out from under her daily and watch to see that she gets off the nest to eat and drink daily. I'm hoping she will break but not forever, it would be nice to have her brood little Wyandottes . . . next year way too much going on this year.
copy and pasted from facebook.... First full day of summer vacation: while I was trying to nap before work, there's a knock on the door. It's my brother-in-law bringing back Halden. He found Halden at his house in the back of his car. We never even knew Halden was gone. The escaping, running, no sense of fear, no response to his name... THESE are my biggest fears and challenges with Halden right now. THESE are the things that may actually kill my child. I bet you never knew that Autism was a life endangering condition? Thank the Lord for Halden's guardian angle today! AND.. . we have chains on the tops of doors. But with the 4 older boys, the chains have to get reset EVERYTIME someone goes in and out. It was one of those times when it didnt get reset that Halden got out. I can't use the regular door alrams because I do have 4 other children going in and out of the doors. We would hear the alarm go off all the time and not know when it's Halden getting out. What I am going to do is get the CareTrak system. It's the only way. Its an ankle or wrist bracelet tracking device Halden will wear at all times. We will have a perimeter set up, and when he crosses the lines outside an alarm will go off. Then I have the tracker machine as well to find him if he's in the corn fields or the woods. It's the only way, but it's very very expensive. I'm afraid to close my eyes or take my eyes off this kid. For the time it will take for me to treat chickens, i dont even want to think what could happen... (I never ever would have thought he would have gone to that brothers house. I have never seen him climb into a car on his own yet. Can you imagine if it was hotter and the brother in law didnt come out to take his dogs for a ride???)
BF4M: How very frightening for you . . . yes his guardian angel and others were with him that day. Sometimes there are grants to help with the cost of things like the system you are looking at. Also you may want to contact the manufacturer, tell them about this incident, they may offer some financial assistance. I know my sis with type 1 diabetes gets help now and then with her pump and some of her many meds that way.

I love looking at everyone's chick pics, so just had to share some of mine. Sorry for taking up so much space, but I'm a proud and excited chicken mama!!

Day 1 of hatch - three fuzz balls

Day 2 - looks like the hatch is complete 8 out of 12

Day 3 - out to the temporary pen for fresh grass, and scratching lessons. Couple of them got behind her during scratch and went flying, resilient little buggers!!

These are soooo sweet! Thanks for sharing!!

RBC, doesn't that give you a scare to see them go flying like that? Drives me nuts every time. Thankfully those chicks are tough. They do learn really fast how to get out of the way. Cute, cute babies. Congrats!

Cind, waaaaaayyyyyy more info than I needed to know in that article!

Heather, how much does that system run? RBC had a great suggestion about looking into possible assistance programs. The manufacturer might be able to point you in the right direction, or maybe an autism support group would know? In any case, good luck. Let me know if you need any help. I do not envy your sitch, especially being back to work now.
