Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

So proud! My baby boy, Daniel, graduated today from Air Force Security Forces(Military Police) Academy today. He is following in the footsteps of his father. He was a USAF SP Dog Handler. I was also in the Air Force but I did Electronics. Anyway, he'll be home soon on leave to visit us before he goes to his first duty station in Montana! The day they graduate is the first day they get to wear their berets so here is a picture of him after graduation in dress blues with beret and badge!

Lisa

Congratulations!!!!!

Hi fellow Wisconsinites :)

I'm Erin, mom to 2, stay at home mom & part time photographer. I'm new to this forum, and chicken raising! My sister has a large chicken coop in her backyard, and this is our first year with chickens. We bought 2 chicks and 2 ducklings from 7 Mile Fair on Mother's Day. They're super sweet, all very friendly and good with our kids (Addy 2, James 4, Lily 6, Silvia 8). My nieces Addy and Silvia are in my avatar photo :)

We're looking to add a few laying aged hens (aiming for Red Star, by family friend and chicken raiser recommendation). Do y'all think they'll be friendly with the younger 4 birds?

The chicks are supposed to be Red Star. Turns out one is a rooster. He's the first one to stand up or move toward you, very protective, but still friendly. He lets all the kids hold/pet him and has never shown aggression. I named him Mr. Grinch :) Our girl's name is up in the air, but I call her Honey Boo Boo.. haha!

Does anyone know what breed our ducklings are? Their names are Creeper (yellow) and Steve (gray).

a few days old?
ducklings about a week after we got them
4 weeks old?
the birdies first time in the coop yard. They love it!

I'm excited to be here and to learn from everyone!!

Welcome. Don't know the duck breeds, but they have cool names!

Lisa

Hi all-
BigFam- so sorry about the chickens
Terri- that is terrible about the ducklings!
BBP- hope the gosling keeps getting better
Lisa- Congratulations!
I was wondering if you could help me sex these chickens. They are about 8weeks old. The black one is a barred rock/Ameraucana mix, and the reddish one is a ?/ Ameraucana mix.The red one has muffs. I am assuming they are EE's. They wouldn't hold still for nothing, so the pictures aren't that great-

Some good news! Only one more down the rest of the day. I did go out and give them yogurt (with live cultures) and cherries for a special treat. (A bit of corid mixed in) . It looked so good the kids were asking if that was their supper!

Brent, I'm kinda surprised you'd preach at me about deep litter method when I'm in the middle of a really rough time right now. I got cocci, not from DLM, but from not adhering to the 30 day quarantine rule. I called CC today and cried because it is so sucky right now. I'm surprised now is the time you would take to preach about DLM.

After having had a nice stiff drink, I think it can be pointed out its nice to have been without certain post -ers for day. Just sayin'.

Also a rather strange anomaly: I have a lavender ameracauna chick that seems to be rumpless. That would make this pure ameracauna chick a genetic throw back to the aracauna heritage. I don't think it's deaf (a common genetic problem in the aracauna) since it comes to check me out when I talk. Otherwise it's the slowest developing roo I've ever seen!!!

Ok... Too much buzz off his 1 drink (yes CC, I know I know!) I have to go to bed. Night all!

TO: I also missed the comment about your ducklings :-( I am so sorry!!!

BBP: THanks for the info I will give her a call, also I have vetrimycin for the goose if you want to use it? :-(

BigFam: Crossing my fingers for you-let us know how things are!

Update: Baby wild bird: doing great and full of sass this morning..not sure how much food I am geting into her..she reminds me of trying to feed a baby vegetables LOL the lil grumpy face/wide mouth
Latte: Still about the same maybe a little more alert but legs/feet stillw eak and going every which way....gave her more food soaked in medicated water and yogurt mixed in....
Thanks for the update about Latte..it sounds like her improvement is slow, but, improvement.

Poor ducklings

so sad to see those little cuties not make it!

Rough start to the Plague Coop. (and no feeling guilty Vicki, if I followed protocol I would have had 4 birds to treat instead of 30 something!) there have been 3 more dead today. But with the amount of bloody stool I saw fresh after I let them out, the droopy wings and eyelids, that number will go up. The worst was one had a bloody bm and lost its intestines in front of me. THAT was rough.

I guess whatever survives should be the strongest. Whatever survives was meant to survive. If I lose entire breeds, then I guess I'm just done with that type.

I have forbidden the children from helping with chores, or going by the chickens at all until this is over. It is really hard to see so many sick. i cant imagine the kids seeing what I saw this morning. i have been picking up the sickest weakest ones and dipping their beaks in water, beyond that, there's nothing i can do. i do feel like a chicken killer and pretty darn sh!tty about the babies suffering right now.

And yes, I lost a chocolate orp pullet. A blue laced red wyandotte isn't looking so good either. There are a few breeds I had my heart set on having. I hope the rest of the chocolates pull through. I hope the BLRW bounces back. Please chicken lucky leprechaun !!!

And PLEASE DEAR LORD ABOVE...MAKE THESE CHILDREN STOP FIGHTING!
I am so sorry you are going threw this..I hope you are getting improvements!
I have a nice BLRW pullet if you loose her. I was going to keep her for showing, you can have her.
I was fortunate and mine all seem to be doing well.

3 more days of treatment. They are all acting normally today.
BigFam - So terrible! Are some of them improving at least? EDIT: We were posting at the same time...just went back and read your last post. Don't know what to say besides I'm praying for your chickens.

TO- Oh No! The ducklings
hit.gif
So sad...they were absolutely precious. I sure hope you feel better.

Angiebubs - I know nothing about raising wild birds, but more power to you. I used to have a lady that lived by me that I took them too when I found them. She had quite an operation and excelled at saving birds. She had the coolest crow that she saved as a chick. The ones I find are usually covered in lice. Did you see any lice/mites? If I pick one up 9 times out of 10 they are walking all over my hands. Creeps me out. These days I usually leave them where I find them in case mom comes back. I sure hope your chick uses it's legs soon.

Jim- Glad you got the hens sold. Man you have a lot of energy. Always working on stuff.

Cuties - My hen is still good. Still in a cat carrier and she wants out. She was all lovey-dovey when she was sick, now not so much. I didn't realize you had sick chickens too...

Pictures are not working for me still on Internet Explorer, so I downloaded google chrome and it works with that browser.

Here is the chicken tractor my husband built. Ran out of stain before we got the bottom plywood and the handle painted, so we still have to paint that and put a door on the coop portion. My chick are enjoying themselves with this. It is 6X16'

Langshan chicks

One of my girls, Bright Eyes Express, Quarter Horse. I have 4 horses, but I won't bore you all with a million pictures...unless of course someone asks, lol.

Hope everyone has a great day and sick chickens get better!

Lisa
Nice looking tractor and horse!
I hope your bird keeps improving.

sort of like blowing up a balloon
...Now we know what is going on at your place JIm! Sorry--couldnt resist!
COngrats to your son (and you) Lisa! Way to go! Shake your son's hand for me!

SO I pulled a bunch of weeds at my place today too...took the kids to the beach, of course L couldnt stay out of the water...his Dad said "is that what she sent him in today??!!" when he saw him tonight! NOPE--all I had to dress him in...

My cats are attacking me for popcorn! You would think that I dont feed them at all...crazy animals.

I thought that the little wild bird might be a sparrow. Looked like a couple we have bouncing around in the grass here...hard to tell without a face shot though. Glad you got him where he needed to be!
I still have only 1 gosling and NO muskovy babies! I have no idea what had happened this year...I usually am overloaded with ducklings by now! I think I will have some really sad buyers this fall...I have had many calls for them already!

OK--I think I will do a bit of "surfing" now...havent been on Pinterest lately...that is usually good for a few hours!

Goodnight! TerriOfeelingtoolazytogooutandworkinthegardenanymore
I have Muscovy ducklings coming out my ears if you need any. I have 14 on the ground and two more nests. One should hatch out Sunday and the other one next weekend. I also have a chicken on a nest of duck eggs.

welcome to the group..I sometimes sell birds at 7 mile fair. It looks like you have two runner crosses.

It might be a slow grower. Would be interesting to have a rumpless. They are pretty rare.
The yogurt was a nice treat for them and will help with tummy problems.

Heather, you are such a lightweight! I can hear you slurring all the way over here.

and to the Cheesehead thread, Erin! Hope you like it here.

I think you need to do a little research into adding new members to your flock. It is not an easy, or pretty, process due to the pecking order, and it can also invite disease, parasites, etc. if you are not careful. Introducing adult chickens to chicks can be a terrible experience depending on the birds. Some can be really aggressive while others might be more passive, but not likely. Your best bet would be to introduce unfamiliar birds that are around the same size/age, so they are at least fairly matched in a fight. And never just drop them into an "existing flock". They need some time & space to check each other out but not be able to touch (fight) right away. Above all, before bringing in any new birds, you should set yourself up a "quarantine" area for the new birds to be able to spend the next 30 days in, and make sure it is well away from your existing flock. That way, if they are carrying some disease/illness/parasite, they won't give it to your birds. You need to observe the new ones to be sure they are healthy.

If your chicks are red stars, they are different colors then? Red stars are sexed by their coloring at hatch. Males are one color while the females are another.

Your rooster might be friendly now, but please be careful with your kids once he gets older. After the hormones kick in, so can the aggression. And they might go after small ones first. Just something to be aware of. Hope this helps.
