Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Thanks WiChookChick, but I'm looking for a western saddle. Sorry I should have been more clear. We have an english saddle right now, that she can't keep her butt in otherwise that would have been a great buy. She is taking lessons on her balance issues, but I keep telling her that balance just isn't in our vocab. She wants to jump.

We are some of the clumsiest people you will ever meet.

One time at the fair we (my DH and other girls) were counting how many times we saw her on the ground. All in good humor of course and she was laughing too, but I think we stopped at 12. I tell her she wasn't named Grace for a reason. Thanks though!

Hi everyone I REALLY NEED some advice! Ok so I have had some young chicks for a few weeks now because after calling multiple sources I was told hens were allowed in the city. Well I couldn't find specific details so I decided to dig deeper and this is what I found. It seems pretty silly and I'm not sure if I should just raise my chickens indoors and not tell anyone or should I attempt to get written permission from the Chief of Police to build and outside coop? This just seems so stupid because basically you can't have anything, and I would already be in trouble for having pet rats, a chinchilla, and a snake. I know TONS of people that have exotic pets, reptiles, and rodents in town, so we are all outlaws? I'm afraid if I try to get permission to have an outdoor coop I will possibly lose my other pets. Any advice?

OFFENSES AGAINST PUBLIC POLICY, 14.03 CITY OF MANITOWOC
(1m) Restricted Species. (a) No person, except for a
duly authorized licensed breeder or pet shop owner, shall keep,
sell, breed or offer for sale one or more horses, cows, pigs, goats,
sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, doves, pigeons or other fowl, bees,
large predators, endangered species or poisonous snakes, rodents,
reptiles, exotic species or wild animals
(collectively “creatures”)
or construct or use shelters therefore within the City of Manitowoc
without the written permission of the Chief of Police or his
designee.
In considering any request for such permission, the Chief
of Police or his designee shall consider the number and type of
animals or creatures, their location, the facilities to be used for
such purpose and the likelihood of a public or private nuisance
being created, a health hazard, and the ability of the owner to
responsibly control and care for the creatures.
(b) All stables, coops, yards, pens, kennels or other
structures wherein any animal or creature is kept shall be
constructed so as to be cleanable and kept in good repair. The
inside and outside shall be whitewashed or painted as often as
necessary to keep them clean or finished with such material that can
be easily cleaned. All such structures shall be kept clean and
sanitary and shall not cause any objectionable odor. Accumulations
of cleanings or manure of more than one day's operation in any such
structure shall be deemed a violation of this section and subject to
a forfeiture action.

I think I would approach the City council and ask them about when this ordinance was written and if they believe it needs updating. Then when the ordinance comittee meets, arrive with your arms loaded with documentation on how all of these pets/animals are not dangerous/health hazzards and ask if they would allow a person to obtain licensure for some of the animals (like how Madison does it).

The way this reads nobody can own anything other than a cat, dog, or plain goldfish.....

Well don't tell them what you already have. Just let them know you were doing some digging and wondered about the wording of this ordinance since MANY people already own a lot of what is listed. How in the world are they enforcing this ordinance anyway?

No, no, BL4...see there...

...they could have a snake as long as it's not ... "endangered species or poisonous snakes"......

--- I wish that little guy's eyes REALLY rolled. Stupid ordinances. BL4 and I have had this conversation before. She has about the same ordinance in her town too. And my homeowner's insurance has my flock on it. It's dumb for sure. Mine states "hobby farm". An extra nearly $100.00 a year. But, they say I can have any animal except a horse is extra.

Snakes would fall under the reptile or exotic part. That is if they want to split hairs.

The ordinance here just states no livestock. No specific animal listed.

Raiquee I sent you a PM.

fordmommy- how do you become a hobby farm? I live in the city and I have a large fully fenced yard but is isn't an acre or anything. Should I try to get a license or something? It does say no one except a licensed........ blah blah blah so what if I get a state license for something then wouldn't that override the city?

I have no idea. Sorry. I live in the country. About 3 miles from town and have almost 8 acres here. It's just how my homeowner's titles me now.
