I tried that. Seemed to work a little. But this last time I went to the DR, I told all the things I tried.....

I told her how I'd be sleeping just fine and all of a sudden I'd wake up. I would happen once an hour or even every 10 minutes. And most of the time I would twitch or wiggle or move for no apparent reason. And she of course asked what I was taking to help me sleep. Anything from benedryl to warm milk, No caffine, No alcohol, calm evenings, hot baths, massages, white noise, to "Power to Sleep PM" (which is a natural supplement that I got from the heath food store here in town. And I'm not much of a coffe drinker. Maybe a cup or two once a MONTH. So that wasn't it.

She put me on a med that's prescribed usually for people suffering from parkinsons. But I have what they call "restless leg syndrom." I thought for years I had that but never said anything. But a few years ago they came up with those commercials for it and I would say...."Hey! That's ME!" And it really has helped!!!

I read an artical just last month, but I can't remember where in.....It talked about how people are over-using the benedryl for sleep aids and something about how your body will start to kinda reject the main ingregient, Diphenhydramine, and it actually will start waking you up, give you a fluttering heart, and other affects. I wish I could remember where I read that. But it was really interesting because I too would use it to help with sleep. They tell you when you are pregnant that it is safe for the baby and that you can use it to aid in the sleep process.

And most of those sleep aids you find in the store have the Diphenhydramine as the main sleep ingredent...Tylenal PM and such.

I hope you get it figured out. I hadn't slept in 5 years. And I was the one that could sleep 12 hours at a crack and then....MAYBE 4 hours a night...IF I was lucky.

They put me on Anbien for a short time, but I had shoulder surgery a few months back, broke my ball in four places. That didn't help with the issue either.
I have been using a great natural sleep aid from my local pharmacy, they just can't get it in, and its their "store" brand.
Plus a few benedryl.. trust me I don't want to use it...

On a completely side note....
How many here are self employed?
I work with 5 horses 3 days a week for 2 hours at a time. Plus feed on weekends when the owner is out of town on business or military weekend.
He left me a note today, wanting horses switched back to the way they were when he left by "end of day..."...
Really... I intended to do that.
We have a large blue 3 ring binder that I log into and out of every time I am there, with each horse's name, what was done, time in/out... blah blah blah...
HE left a note asking to work with a yearling stud colt that is having aggression issues over grain feeding a few days a week.
I put that horse and the horse he was having issues with a 2 yr old gelding alone in a small pasture to observe, and find out what caused it, what triggers
the aggression, and what he and I could do to minimize what caused him to want to be aggressive at feeding time.
I left notes from the weekend, and one of them was that I would grain today....
He has a lot on his plate, I know that, and is going through some personal and business stuff. ..BUT he created the note book.. I would think he would read it.
Sigh..
Yes I was proffessional, but really...grrr. LOL
Thanks for letting me get this out of my system.

Hey Carol(WiCC)... where are you at...we are in New Glarus. 20 minutes south of Madison.

Sorry to hear about all the crazyness going on... me.. I have insomnia issues too... going to my Dr on Thursday to talk about that as well as some other fun stuff. Ugh.
Well this weekend is the time... we are building our coop. Since we are supposed to have only 3 bird limit in our area, but have gotten permission for 6( it is really 1 livestock per acre...we have 3 acres but argueed that how does a little chicken compare to a horse). DH has confirmed that is the max we will have (maybe I can sneak one or two more in there down the road) but we are planning for 5-6 right now. So coop itself will be 4 x 8 with a walk in run to match. We plan to make a tractor too we can move around the yard. Not sure on free ranging yet as we have an open yard, althoug would be fun to hang out with the chickens with the kids.

We decided not to insulate, but it is in a tree block location that should limit the wind coming through. We are hoping to make it pretty air tight so no drafts and such, but do you have suggestions on ventilation? We are getting a window to put in but wondering if we need to leave some gaps between the roof and walls for venting?
Have any of you done something like that?

We are hoping to have this done this fall ( next few weeks would be the hope) so we can tell if there are major draft spots or leaks or repairs before the babies come.

Also... I was reading about a silkie breeder down near Mequon... anyone go through them and know quality? I want at least one silkie in my brooder come spring.

on the fun note - I just ended the raised garden bed with the peppers and tomatoes... just a few cherry tomatoes coming in so I gave up on those and dug them out. Got about a dozen jars of spaghetti sauce made with a bag of romas in the freezer if I need them. Lots of cucumbers came late this year so think I am done with my cucumber and Zucchini pickles. Should keep us well stocked through the winter. Although the kids love pickles so we go through them in phases. Only 2 pumpkins made it this year... bummer but at least there are two for two kiddos at home!

Have a great Tuesday everyone

And I'm back again! I am so terrible about getting on to post! Techincally, I should really be studying for my test tomorrow, but wanted to say hello first!
Rosie's eggs are FANTASTIC, it turned out that she was our first layer, not Stella. Although Stella laid her first today too! I am so proud of my girls!
My family is also in the process of adopting a lovely buff cochin hen who was found on the side of the road in Chicago. The people who found her think she fell of the back of a truck.
The little cochin is being kept in Chicago (by a rescue organization) for a few days, and if she (I hope!) doesn't crow before Friday, a rescue orgnization here in Madison will be picking her up then we get her! I can't wait! She is such a gorgeous girl (I'll post the picture later) and I can't wait to add her to my flock. I hear they are great broodies too, so maybe we'll try out hatching a few chicks next Spring!!

Amyable- I'm sure your eggs will come soon! I didn't see my first one until they were over 21 weeks old. My second just laid today (23 1/2 weeks, I think) and the other two are trailing behind! It's worth it... take lots of pictures!!

Sorry to hear from my fellow insominacs! I have to take valerian and melatonin every night to sleep... I also drink a valerian tea most nights. Seems to be the only way I get rest anymore!!
Good luck, I hope you all sleep well tonight!

Kristip, I am in Oregon, but used to live in Albany and Paoli.
From what I have heard in our big area, I would insulate, or put straw bales along the side that gets the most wind/snow blowing. And use a heat lamp if you can.
You can use a timer and a thermostat if need be.
You do need a good area for ventilation, I keep my chickens in a stall for the winter, they have two large windows, we double plastic layered them, and made sure there was no leaks for cold winter
wind to come in.. The stall sides had plastic on them, up to the top, but the stall divider between two stalls did NOT go to the top.
We have a small chain link dog kennel 4/4 type, and we cover that with wood, and the back and sides with either a blanket layer or a mattress cover. We have not had a single loss to cold even with our young or old hens.
I have silkies and there is a lady quite close to you in New Glarus/Monticello who sold us our pair and quite a few other silkies, they are show quality I think, she had them on Madison Craigslist.
My other silkies came from up near Stevens Pt.

I sure hope I can sleep tonight.. I am almost dreading it.

Have you tried white noise to fall asleep? Turn your radio on to static and have it set low. Ocean noise?

Just throwing things out there. I hope you all manage to get to sleep and stay there!

Off to bed for me, another bright and early day tomorrow.

I would take the swans and get a pair of black ones to match!

to the Cheesehead Thread! Not sure if I saw you on here before!

My coop is not insulated at all and I staple feed bags to the chicken wire sides in the winter. They say that if you have too much moisture and no ventilation in there then you get frozen combs and such. I am trying to think of a way to get more airflow in the winter because I do get frozen combs when it is below zero. Might be coop building time for me too this weekend...gotta get going on that project!

Did not go to ride yesterday but I did go to Madison and drive on the new side of I94--very nice. I ended up taking Gorham through the neighborhoods and was so glad I didnt have the trailer! Maybe in a week or two when it is a little better on the beltline. Also DD18 got a bus pass so she could ride and meet me closer to the highway so I font have to go into town so far.

Today certainly had not a good beginning! My JRT took off and didnt come in with the rest to eat; puppy came home last night so stayed in the house and barked on and off ALL NIGHT; got everyone fed, after pulling out my shoulder reaching for a dish in the back of a kennel---found the lost one and tried to make coffee...my brand new pot let the water flow out the bottom (all 12 cups) and it went all over the counter and floor....AAACK! Good thing I had the old pot ready to go to St Vinnies so I brought it is and am FINALLY having my first cuppa! WHEW! Perhaps I should go back to bed?

This is what I am watching now:
46457_new_puppies_039.jpg

Mom dog and brown puppy chewing (destroying) a baby toy that was supposed to be for my parrots! Better than my computer cords I guess!

Well I sure hope all you sleepless folks get some resolution! I had that problem too but only have it sometimes now. The worst thing is that the more you worry about it the less you sleep and it becomes a vicious cycle! What was waking me up was my DH snorting and pain. Dh got a C-PAP machine and I got some meds for pain--sometimes I can sleep all night now! (if there isnt a puppy barking that is!) Have a great and productive day all! Apple pies here I think...gotta work on this place I call a home too--more like a sty lately! Terri O
