So tell him old man.... How would you go about persuading your parents into more chckens?

At four thirty, my mom gets up from her nap and we are having a family meeting thing to talk about birthday parties and getting some more chickens. I want to get some more layers because we are now selling eggs to the neighbors, only 3, but still, we only get 5-7 eggs a day. We have some pullets that should start laying within the next couple weeks, but that is only 6 or 7 more hens. I would like to get a good flock of 35 layers. Right now I have 15 layers including the pullets that aren't laying. 6 roos, of which two are still very young chicks. Along with 11 HUGE broilers that have one little guy with them that hatched the same day we got the broilers. He looks like a dwarf. He is maybe a eighth their size but is fine with being the small one. So in all 31 chickens, including broilers that will be gone in two months. Once the broilers are gone, 20 chickens will remain. All I want is another 20 hens to spread the roos out and get more eggs. I mean I have two coops already that are huge, enough to hold 40 chickens each, and not to mention the horse stall that is set up to hold some chicks. I don't think that it is that much to ask. I'll pay for the chicks and the egg money we get can pay for some of the food.

That was just a practice for the actual argument, whew.

Think it will work?
You need a bit more information for the argument to work. Probably on paper how much food cost and how much money you can earn back on the egg production. Possibly the sales of chicks, the extra help in the garden with the extra chicken manure..etc Winning an argument when you have done the homework and the math might just change your mind too. Raising chickens to sell eggs does not pay for feed unless you grow your own feed or free range and not feed during spring, summer and fall.

Of course a wise crack from JJ !!!!

Heather it's most likely water that she just drank and is still in the crop. I would think is she hasn't drank for a while and it vomits fluid or anything that it may han impacted crop or sour crop? I've picked up many of chickens and water pours out !! Don't think that is a concern unless of course they have other symptoms.
be careful I might pout. and go away like all those other nice people that were run off this thread by some .( this might be another wise crack)

Serviceberries (Juneberries):

Serviceberries have a much smaller leaf than chokecherries. It is now past the berry-producing stage for serviceberries.

Had something like that it was basically a shell-less yolk, turns out I think half my flock had infectious bronchitis... The next eggs had shells but they had "tails"/"fingers" on the ends then they had holes in the end finally complete eggs but the white is very watery.Thankful the entire flock was not involved. I am hoping that the eggs keep improving or we will have 3 for soup :(

Yikes,

My Penedesenca has been acting poorly last couple of days, just standing under a tree with it's wing drooped, so we caught her last 2 nights and gave her some Tylan, (first night after we caught her she vomited water, before any meds were given), and I noted her poop was just like water... Her crop felt full, but liquidy, Her comb is still nice and red, so was flummoxed on what was going on.
This morning when I let them out I noticed this big thing under the roost, (thought it was a dead chick at first, although haven't any ready to hatch), upon closer inspection it is a egg inside some kind of sac...
Do I need to be worried about this? Why would the sac come out too? The chicken seemed fine this morning, and I am assuming it was from her... although I am not 100% positive...but the egg is the right color and size.

Dang it had the whole story written out and somehow accidentally deleted it.

Anyway, long story short, I was a suck up and easily got mom on my side. Dad took a lot of answering to get him, he's still thinking about it but I'm pretty sure I got him. He was asking all the questions you guys said. How are you going to pay for all the food, where are you going to put them, and I don't want a light on all winter long. I told him that he would get half of our egg money, by the way, I get 2.50 a dozen and 3.00 if I deliver

. I told him about all the room I have and that they won't need a light from probably somewhere around November. He thinks that it is too many, but 40 chickens in three coops, all of which free range, is not that much. Especially with all the kitchen scraps our family piles up! And I am also getting 8 chicks from my dads friend for free, all hens, sebright and brahmas. He said he'll try to decide by the end of the night. If all goes well this will be a great day!

I'm home for one night since the hubby is finally home (after 14 days in NJ for fuel specialist school). He leaves again already tomorrow night for drill. Booo! Kids were excited to get a bike ride and movie night with him. Mom is setting off 4 more flea foggers tonight at my sister's house, so I'm praying we'll be seeing some light at the end of this painfully itchy buggy tunnel soon!! Freaking bugs LOVE my blood and I have at least 30 bites on my legs (only a few of those are skeeter bites).. none of the other humans have been bothered! Will be back there Fri and Sat nights and I don't need any more bites!
