Work at Fox today was fun; I set up the Cell Respiration lab today. The students are making bread for their lab! How cool is that! The profs were worried the bread would not rise in time, so I set up the lab to use the 5 minute bread recipe that was printer in Mother Earth News a few years back.

This way the students will make a decent loaf of bread in 40 min instead of 2 1/2 hours.

Next week there is another class making soap! So exciting!!!! I love my job here...... I even convinced them to change the Osmosis Diffusion lab to one using Gummi bears......

food is always a great way to engage the students, and they are more likely to remember the information if they can tie it to something fun or useful!

And now, back to Tanked......

Melissa, I hope things get better on the work situation. I am glad you have fox to fall back and keep you happy!

Looking forward to any comments on the fodder system tomorrow!!

Hi All

Welcome KV cute little girl on big horse!

bl4....Glad you like the Fox job! If the other goes under do you think you could get a few more hours there?

Cool cake, neat mamograhms!

Well, it's been a long work in progress but I finally ordered the fingers for the chicken plucker! Second son says that's all he was waiting for to finish it. I thought he still needed a part so I didn't order the fingers! Now to work on fattening roosters!

That's it for today.... night all.

delisha, your website is quite nice and should be adequate for what you are aiming to accomplish. I am not a fan of the "Greenfire Farm" pricing structure, but as my old friend Dan Powell would say to me "this is America **** it and there is nothing wrong with profit".

Viki, love he website! I am glad you will be adding more personal touch. Maybe a tid bit of history. I like your story about your daughters birds, and how you feel differently toward your orps. And I wondered if your price was for a dozen chicks?...

Carol!!!!!!! I can not beleive that was you lol it is soo amasing lol I am gratefull for the cart and harness you have offered :) fri evening works for us. But sat evening would be even better! Just lmk! Syd is excited to pick your brain lol Brownie was a bit crabby tonight lol we kept him in because of all the rain. I didnt want to leave the barn open. We have chickies in quarantine in there. And dont want the others investigating just yet!

Kv, welcome! That is such a sweet picture :) I am jealous of that big horse and little girl! My kiddos seem so big!! (7 &4)

Bbp, fingers crossed!

Have any of you heard of fodder? Scott has been working on a setup. And has some things growing already! I think this may become our main food supply durring the winter months. Tomorrow we will be giving out the first samples. See how it goes!

Those of you with horses, would it be ok to not keep water in Brownie's stall? Of coarse days lile today when he needs to be kept in, I will give it to him. But on days when he is out from sunup to sun down...
I think water at all times is critical. Sun up to sun down is only around 8 hours coming up. You will need to keep it from freezing in the winter. Usually it is hung up on the wall so they don't spill it. Just get a bucket hanger. Without water horses can colic. They need to keep all that dry feed moving through through their gut.

Del, I like the website from mobile ok. I still need to check from my actual computer.

Cuties,

I tried fodder and I prefer just doing a 3 day growth of sprouts. I am lazy and it is less work and maintenance.
I use feed bags and toss in 4 cups of seeds/grain, soak for 24 hours and lay them on the lid of a tote bucket after draining.
I usually have two bags going and one bag feeding. I just invert the bag and hang it in the coop. They pick off the sprouts.

I use wheat, oats, and if i can find it or have any of mine left over..gmo free corn.
I have also done milo and regular no waste bird seed.

The price of birds is per chick
I am not a big hatchery. The foundation of the birds are imports. It cost thousands of dollars to import a bird.
If you invest thousands of dollars in your foundation stock it make financial sense to charge money for the chicks. They are rare and are not found at regular hatchery's. My prices are less than most places. No matter what I charge for chicks, I will not recoup my investment. It is not a money making business unless you are a larger hatchery, even larger hatchery's have a hard time making a profit. They sell by volume. I have no intentions of volume selling. I do not have the space or the birds.

For local people, pick ups, family, friends etc the price will be different and quantity does not apply. For short shipment in WI this time of year, it will be safe to ship 3 chicks that are a week or so old.

Congrats on the mini Cuties. To me the pic looks like it either has a hay belly or could be wormy but just my opinion. I've had many minis and Miller is right you really have to watch how rich their hay is, grain and spring grazing. If my horses are locked up at night we always put a water container in their stall. Mainly they are out in the pasture or hovering the round bale(which I hate feeding) but always have water source. I'd geld him as soon as you see nuggets, I've had mini stallions do alot of harm, one crushed my hand rearing and coming down on me. I had the false idea that if I had no mares around and I trained him well I wouldn't have a problem(besides the fact he was a mini), boy was I wrong as they will try and dominate you as their mare. This was nearly 20 years ago and my first experience with a stallion, boy did I learn. They day I had him gelded the school bus was just coming home and all the little kids were screaming "their killing a cow", it was priceless.

Delisha, you site is looking good but I would give a longer description on the breeds to explain more for new comers that don't realize how hard you are working at preserving. The pricing per description of bird is hard to understand also. Momgille is correct a home page is required. One thing I have ALOT of experience in is web design, I actually went to college for it and had a home business for many years.

Glad things are looking up for you Cindy and return of your kitty.

Well I just checked the 3 eggs the BLRW abandoned and one is externally pipped, one internal and one is a few days off yet. Secretly I was hoping they quit but I'm hoping for a blrw. Of the 13 hatched earlier their was only 1 the rest are black laced. Not very good percentages from my flock. I'll try again next year.

Sorted all the pullets and cockerels and I have an over abundance. I'm not good at butchering if anyone wants some roos to fill their freezer their more than welcome to them. Theirs nearly 20. I moved all the pullets into one coop and have all the roos and cockerels in the hay dryer pen. I really have to rethink my breeding plans and downsize considerably.
