Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

erinnoie: Sorry to hear about your ducks - we also have kennel panels and big pheasant netting over the top. But after reading Jim's post, I'm now worried about weasels or martens. I'm assuming they will dig under the kennel panel and not sure edging with patio block will help. I may be closing their little coop doors to the run from now on. What are/were the red roosters you butchered? We have Rhode Island Red hens and are thinking of hatching RIR's next year when one of the hens goes broody
I had to google 'martens'.. why do these weasely things have to be so cute in photos. No matter how cute they may be, whatever we trap is in big trouble!
We have an open run.. will look into netting. My sister has seen a hawk a couple times, luckily without any birdy thefts.
The red roos were sold to us as chicks as RIR (off CL), but it may be some kind of mix with RIR. We got a pretty random bunch of breeds that day. :) Whatever they were, they were not very friendly and were quite small (compared to the white leghorn and funky laced one of the same age 21 weeks, and our first roo who we were told was red star (most likely also a mix) was about 3x their size at least!)

ok...non chickeny stuff...but for those not on facebook...might be a good laugh. My seven year olds wrote their christmas letter to santa last night on their own. I had to translate from seven year old to fully legible though...

Here is Morgans: Merry Christmas Santa,
This is my favorite time of year. Only if I get presents. I am really happy to have Christmas. You know me, Morgan! We (our family last name) love Christmas. I'm excited for Christmas. Santa I wish you have a merry Christmas too. Love Morgan. I think I have been good.

And not be outdone...here is Andrews: Deer Santa. I have been good a lot and a little bit bad, like this ...99.5%

sigh...that is why I love them to death.

LOL kids are so funny! I'll have to ask my daughter to write a letter to Santa and see how it turns out. She's also 7. I love reading her homework/projects from school ~ Recently she wrote about being "thankful for mommy, daddy, my dog and my cats" but left out her brother, haha!! My boy is 5 and is circling EVERYTHING in the toy catalog, saying "I'm going to get THIS and THIS and THIS! for Christmas!" He's going to be so disappointed.. lol

oh yes...my son also included his three page list of toys from the catalog... love them. I told them both that santa might pick one or two things, but that isit! What is your daughter into Erin? Mine is into Dolls like crazy.

My daughter loves her stuffed animals, recently started dressing them up and playing with baby dolls more (like playing house). She also plays a lot with Monster High and Barbie. She LOVES to color, paint, draw. She got a Furby for her birthday, but lost interest fast, but loves her password journal. Her Christmas list seems to include a lot of My Little Pony, the new Equestria girl stuff. I think I'm going to get her one of those bracelet looms this year too. She's surprisingly hard to shop for..

The bracelet loom is a hit in our house and my daughter is buying one for her brother. My daughter loves teh big dolls rather than barbies and also likes dressing up animals as well as dolls. My friend is giving me a huge build a bear collection for her. She also loves the arts things. My son is into building things ( we are going erector this year in stead of lego) and army guys. I think I am done with them for hte holidays. Lot sof books too now that they have figured out reading they love it,

My BLRW chick living in the house with 3 others. Colors are finally starting to come in. I'm so excited after all the chicks I've hatched this is the first to show any signs of blue. I was scared as their was only a small bit of reddish on the far wing feather until later and the new feathers coming all have lacing. Do you still think it's a pullet? Will the color darken as it grows? Just wondering if its worthy to grow out? Been a long year to get this one bird.

Heres another chick, but black laced which is what all of them have turned out so far. The largest one to grow out that I didn't sell was a cockerel and I sold him recently.

still did not go outside.. looks cold out there..

we have eaten a few guineas.. you won't be disappointed.. the meat is a little darker than chicken,, but it makes the BEST soup !!

I don't think it was a martin that killed the ducks.. a martin can be a pretty sizable animal..
I would consider weasel, first.. and then, if you are close to a river or stream,, mink would be my second choice..

and now I have to get off this computer and go do something, even if it is wrong ..

Here is the only Buff Orp I ended up with out of a dozen I bought as chicks, he's about 5 months old. I have 2 buff hens I was thinking of making a trio with. Is he worth even breeding?

why wouldn't he be a breeder ? what do the hens look like ?
I guess I should of worded that better, I tend to ramble and become un-understandable. I meant was he worth keeping for a trio, as in type. Obviously he's not a Heritage and neither are my hens but they are nice looking. I'll run out and see if I can get a picture of them, I think they are nice but my opinion means nothing if I'm hatching chicks to sell.
