Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

How do you provide them water??

Do you live near a pond/stream?   I would like ducks but my stream is over 500 feet from my house and not too sure if they would head to the stream and never come back.

Welcome newbees! We have ducks. Mostly call. And one ginormous crested duck :) I have one duck (quack) he is the leader of the pack. I kept one wing clipped on him when he first got here. And he stays near. All of the rest follow him. And they come in every night for lockdown. For the first few weeks we had to go out every night. And walk them in. And now they go all on their own!
We provide them with a kid pool. But the mini horse recently chewed their tank heater! Naughty.
In spring hubby says he is putting in a pond for them!!!! ♡

! We are looking at purchasing some old bilboard covers for liner. We'll see!

I do not wish to banter about hunting or selective harvest of deer as I dont see how that has anything to do with someone poaching turkeys.......I was only saying shooting birds over a feeder seems more than a little unethical to me......... just an opinion I prolly should have kept to myself as this is prolly not the place to express my thoughts sorry zekejustlookingoutforthewildlife So I cant wait for the spring swap meets to start..... hope to see some of you again ,,,, Irish where is your store at? I would like to stop by some time n check it out,,,,maybe bring the misses by some weekend..... Deilisha... I would like to by a few eggs from you BLRW if you are interesred... maybe when things warm up a little and you have confirmed fertility...let me know.... I have been trying to downsize my flock alittle,,, be a little more sellective my goal is 15-18 and i m down to 29 so I m almost there in chicken numbers I am enjoying reading along and I am glad to be back and hope to see many of you at the bash this year...... Cooties I still have those rabbit pens we talked about and the quail pen... Hows the hubby doing with the quail project... looks like you ve got alot of things goiing good for you are the kids in 4 H this year? C C and Terri O glad to see you both r doing well Good to hear from both of you... WOW thats enough of that Be kind and generous with your kindness It cost you nothing ZEKE

Drop me a line when you are ready..the Wyandotte are laying well..My incubator is full of dotties.
Quote: welcome 1876 and Grassfed..always wonderful to see new faces around here..
I also live close to the IL WI border..on the WI side!!

I would not worry about ducks coming back from the pond if you have an LGD that will go with them..or you can build them a pred proof pen close to the pond they can lay, brood and stay in at night. You will still loose a few with out the dog.

Chickens are cold but good. When we locked them in, they were so ticked they decided to not lay eggs for 2 days. Hopefully that is remedied now!

Say Cheryl or Terri... we will be in Marshall for a wrestling tournament this Saturday and hoping my mom will drive up from milwaukee to meet us... is there a good Pizza Joint or resteraunt around there?

thanks
I think I have eaten at Pablo's taco's and remember it being pretty good more of a American/Mexican Family Diner feel.

good afternoon,, I was not able to get online all day until just now.. Had to call the putor company again.. that will end tomorrow,, we are having a new provider coming to hook us up..

about your duck pond, I dug one many years ago,, it was fine, except I did not provide a way to drain it.. It got so slimy and stinky I took the tractor and front loader and filled it back in with dirt..

I now use one of those mud (mortar) mixer tubs from Menard's for the geese pool.. it is about 5 years old and holding up well.. the one I ran over with the tractor did not fair as well..

A guard dog has to be trained to go with the ducks or whatever.. don't expect one that is trained for animals to just take up with the ducks..
maybe a border collie would do better for ducks.. they are easily trained..

CRS has settled in.. plus I am just getting over my mad-on about not being able to " cumpute "..

Hey all! I have been working like crazy trying to get ready to go on my scrapbook weekend...at least I KNOW this one will happen! Pretty much all the same stuff I did in the middle of January. Had to take a break...my hands are sore from making Calico Salsa and all that cutting. I am heading to the vet as soon as I am done here. Meds needed for two dogs.
Speaking of dogs...my foster Pearl was a complete turd last night when a family came to see her! Brat--I just know she wants to stay here....NOT! Needless to say they didnt take her...

I will change the bash number BL--I thought I was right...first one was at Hartman Creek in 2010 yeah...I cant count! Have we really been at camp for three years? I think I can only remember two...

OK--break is over. Stay warm--stay kind! TerriO

(PS) JJ, I made some delicious chili with that venison last night! DH even said it might be one of the best I have made. He doesnt usually like my chili cause it doesnt hurt when you eat it!

I'm glad you are able to get another provider. We only have the one - I have spent the last 4-5 days rebooting the d@mn modem.

BL4: Love your DD's Ag project - very creative.

Momgille: How cool on the gift of the grain mill, what a generous thing for him to do. It feels good when we can do for others, that's how good karma works

you made his day and WOW he really made yours. Looking forward to some of the fresh baked bread from your milled wheat!

UnkaDan: Those phones are tough little buggers. Hubby had an old Nokia that went through the front load washer and dryer

and just like a Timex it "took a lick'n and kept on tick'n", or should I say "ring'n"

Hey jim :) we will miss you tomorrow when you are getting refurbished!
I planned to save a little $ and get a nice pump for the pond. I told scott I want some real long tubing to hook to the pump. I want to use that water for all of the flowers. I came up with this idea when I was sitting on my throne as Scott calls it (not the toilet) lol Every spot we dumped the duck pool last year had the most plush green grass!
He also learned how to build some pretty mega filters. It will be an adventure for sure!
Terri, how are the pipes? Hope not freezing!

I like the sh!t pump idea.. it is ironic, you can pump that all over they yard, but it is illegal to pump your holding tank onto your own property ..

that duck soup would be good for some garden crops.. corn, beans,, anything non-root ..

Any snowdrifts blocking your chickens? Here's a few pictures from my husband... he said the snow drifts in one part of the run was 5' high.

Our coop is on the left, the makeshift coop shown is for new spring chicks and integrating them with the established flock (they can see each other but that's it).

House in WI (all my kids go to WI schools), but my farm is 3 properties from the WI border in Illinois.
Where along the border are you?

sounds like all are keeping busy while it is so cold outside!

It's been interesting around here again to say the least. Sunday DH went out to do snow removal and about half way through the route he calls me- catastrophic failure of our tractor that does the bulk of the snow removing..... something happened and it was spilling hydraulic fluid...they caught it in time to get it back on the trailer. He needed us to bring out the 2nd walk behind snow blower and our shovels...yep we were recruited to help finish. So DD and myself helped shovel and DS(12) and DS(8) hung out in the car playing games. Took us about 5 hours to finish the route

On Monday DH took the backend of the tractor apart and found that a spider gear had broke and punched a hole in the case, along with small pieces of metal in the oil. This of course runs the hydraulic and hydrostatic system so now to figure out what direction we will go as far as repairing. Looks like we will getting more snow tomorrow and Sat so now to figure out how to make everything work.....sigh. I see more shoveling in my future.

Day 19 here for the 2nd group of eggs, hoping we get a nice hatch again.

Off to get the kids ready for bed and hang out with them!
