Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning, having my first cuppa..

Dora woke me up at 5 am to go outside.. do you know what it is like to wake up with a large dog's face starring you in the eye ?? I"M AWAKE !!!!! I could have been scarrier,, it could have been Annie ..

I90, I raise purebred chickens.. I do not hatch crossbreed eggs.. unless I intend to eat the chickens, then it doesn't matter what breed they are ..

a long while ago, I let my flock go cross breed.. I had to just about start from scratch to correct that problem,, never again ..

I let them all flock together until it is egg collecting for hatching time.. then I put like breeds into separate pens for several weeks ..

I have 3 distinctly different breeds so that the chicks look nothing alike.. no confusion when they hatch..

the barred rock chicks are black,, the Delawares are yellowish , and the buff orpingtons are reddish..

Do most of you have barnyard mixes or pure breeds?

I would be open to raising a specific type of pure breed and then swapping with other pure breeds... do any of you do that?
I have Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Ameracuana's, Silkies, Marans, and meat birds.
Several of us swap on here and take our birds to shows.

Very cool... I only have 1 mixed (not counting my 3 Easter eggers), she's a BCMxBR. I have pure breed hens : BR, BO, Black stars. I'm not sure if black stars are considered pure. My only rooster is a BCM. (Not counting a few muts that we will be culling- hatched last summer).

I guess all I need to start some pure lines is a BO roo, BR roo and some Maran hens. My husband and I were talking about getting a straight run of BOs this spring... That's a start!!

Snowy day to all.....Welcome to the newbies, good folks here for sure!

Great news about Dexter bl4. I hope he has a place in the country and good loving owners that will enjoy him.

I made a run to town this morning....dang white-out coming home....I sure don't miss life on the road like I did for 30 years.

I picked up 200lbs of corn zeke...the wild turkeys will have full crops now...thanks for the prod....I needed it.

Stay Safe...bigz

Your black stars are a hybfid.. no future in breeding them ..

last year I bought 100 BO pullets.. I raised them for a few weeks and then started selling them.. I made enough $$$ to pay for the 100 and had some left for myself.. there were a few roosters in the mix, as there always are,, I kept two, sold two and butchered one or two..

sometimes you can make a couple more $$$ if you sell a trio or a rooster and 4 or 5 pullets.. but don't expect to sell that combo too often.. pullets sell like hotcakes .. especially if they are old enough to no longer need supplemental heat ..

this year we are thinking of getting some cornishXrock.. and butchering them at 4 or 5 weeks for our version of cornish game hens,, for Thanksgiving I want to serve a whole chicken to each person at the table.. something I always talked about doing, but never got a round tuit ..

still snowing here.. and I have to go to town at 6 PM.. Annie just came from town and said it is miserable driving.. we have about 4 inches plus of new white sh!t ..

I do not wish to banter about hunting or selective harvest of deer as I dont see how that has anything to do with someone poaching turkeys.......I was only saying shooting birds over a feeder seems more than a little unethical to me......... just an opinion I prolly should have kept to myself as this is prolly not the place to express my thoughts sorry zekejustlookingoutforthewildlife So I cant wait for the spring swap meets to start..... hope to see some of you again ,,,, Irish where is your store at? I would like to stop by some time n check it out,,,,maybe bring the misses by some weekend..... Deilisha... I would like to by a few eggs from you BLRW if you are interesred... maybe when things warm up a little and you have confirmed fertility...let me know.... I have been trying to downsize my flock alittle,,, be a little more sellective my goal is 15-18 and i m down to 29 so I m almost there in chicken numbers I am enjoying reading along and I am glad to be back and hope to see many of you at the bash this year...... Cooties I still have those rabbit pens we talked about and the quail pen... Hows the hubby doing with the quail project... looks like you ve got alot of things goiing good for you are the kids in 4 H this year? C C and Terri O glad to see you both r doing well Good to hear from both of you... WOW thats enough of that Be kind and generous with your kindness It cost you nothing ZEKE

"Hyrbrid" that's what they are called... I thought I had read that they don't breed pure.. or something like that. (not sure of all this chicken terminology)

When you said "whole chicken to each person" all I could think of was my TG dinners... I host ~15 or more family, most that come on Wed night sleep on my floor and leave on Sunday, I'm not sure I would be able to cook a chicken per person..... yikes!!

Where do you buy your BOs from?

ugh...gonna be one of those days. Was going great before...got a job offer at the place I have been consulting at for past 6 months and it was exactly what i was hoping for and they asked me if I can attend a conference in Orlando in June and oh by the way...we get you a double room and you can bring whomever and we cover the hotel while you are there... hmmm.

but then got home and my son decided to help me with the heated waterer that I was taking outside to fill up and he decided to take top off and try to fill it and then it was having issues going back on. I use fill hole on bottom. Get it outside and fill it in coop and go to flip and it explodes and gets the outlet in the coop wet so no more heated waterer and no more heat lamp. Nothing works. hubby is going to kill me... and the chickens have been used to that heat lamp for a few weeks and now nothing.
calgon take me away...
