Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All!

Bl4... that's cool about figuring the horse size. As far as bee stings go, I don't think anyone likes bee stings, but they are being studied for some types of disorders, like arthritis, MS. and a bunch of other things.

Ok, went back to re-read post and got hit with a big tired.... time for bed.... Night All!

Hatch update: There was one chick stuck, had unzipped part way and got a toe out and did not progress..hubby helped it out when I was gone, even when I said not to....I took all the other chicks out of the incubator and left it in overnight hoping it would perk up, I even gave it some sugar water last night and this morning. It takes the water then kinda heaves, I think some is staying in though. It cannot stand, hangs it's wings at it's side and keeps its toes curled. Can this chick be saved?

good morning,

as to "saving" chicks that have a problem hatching I don't here, in only 3 years of incubating (a few hundred chicks) I found that there is a reason that chick wasn't making it out. Even if you save it I doubt it will ever thrive,,,,it's hard to cull a chick for me, I prefer to let nature take it's course.

Zeke, I've been wanting to get bees for awhile! Where do you get yours from?

Jim, she was a gorgeous, healthy bird. She layed every day and she just stuck her head through the bottom bit of the fence--that isn't a whole 'diamond' anymore because of winter bedding buildup, and that's how I found her. Not a mark on her--nothing tried to pull her through or anything. I hypothesized that she broke her neck because I have no clue what else it might be. It took a bit of finagling to get her head out of the hole. I'm out there every day and with only three birds you notice health issues right away, y'know?

Horse pictures make me want to go riding....I've been looking into this HelpX thing recently and thought maybe I'd do that this summer. There are a couple of midwest organic farms that are looking for helpers. Being a single mom I'd have to go when the kids were with their grandparents out West, but it would be good experience.

It may be savable, but why would you want to keep a weak chick?

well, hubby helped it out, he can cull it if need be :/

good morning,,

with her head pulled through the fence like that, I would be watching for a weasel or a mink anyhow.

I am about to head into town right now for a cuppa.. not because I have to, but because I can, now that I have my own wheels..

If chicks do not want to hatch, there is usually a good reason.. I would cull that sickly one right now. you can do what you want..just hatched chicks do not need supplements.. they are still working on the yolk ..

We had a fisher by our old place, but I don't think that's the case here. I mean, wouldn't the weasel just go in the run? It's not THAT impenetrable. Just a covered dog kennel. My main predator here mid-city is humans. Could be wrong. :)

Either way, I'm chicken shoppin' soon!

here is how a weasel operates..

It is a hoarder.. It kills an animal/bird drags it to it's larder and goes for another one..
when it gets into a chicken coop it just kills, kills, kills, then it attempts to drag the carcasses home..

Often it gets the head through the fence but the body won't fit, so he leaves it and tries another ..

Sometimes the head is eaten.. but that might not be the case,, it could be that the weasel tears the head and neck by pulling on it..
