Wayne is a great guy, lives about 15 minutes from me. I've got a couple of his birds in my pen and they are superb. Got 12 of his eggs in the incubator, too. He was kind enough to let me pick up a dozen from him. Hoping some of them are fertile (given the season and the sporadic laying).

Hi all, I got a duck who started laying now??!

still didn't find that other duck, did I tell you guys that our out cast duck took off? we got a kitten dropped off out here AGAIN! it almost got eaten by our dog. it was a funny sight.
ok can anyone explain to me WHO layed a chocolate egg in the coop? its REALLY dark, like the dark eggs in the 'bator pic back a few posts. Its the first egg that has been that dark, there was NO yolk and those big mables are bigger than what it was. what I have in the coop are EE, RIR, white leghorn, brahmas, brown leghorns, white/red rocks, and silkies all of which are older than 31 weeks?! oh and muscovie ducks. I dont know? what I do know is the day that I found it, as I was walking out to the coop I was wondering WHY in heck I had chickens and having to go out to the coop in this COLD weather. and when I got out there they new I needed a surprise! I just want to know who layed it? not one since and its been days.

ok gotta go make hot cocoa (powder) for christmas gifts. man do I got alot to do. My daughters bday party is Sunday. Arg! its not recomended having a child near Christmas. Talk later

Sunnyside is good for Cornish X's, and very very basic chickens and turkeys. If they had an expanded line of chickens or even turkeys I would buy from them. I am not thrilled by what the "Industry" says we should be raising so...

Anyone spread a few wood ashes in their coops for the chickens? And if so what exactly is a few? I have a pail full so they are eithier going in the garden or the coop or both. I have read elsewhere some are good to spread in the coop bedding. Any idea's?

To the cold weather, but oh wait I do choose to live here so WTH is wrong with me? LOLOLOL

Took some fresh wheat grass to the coop today for the chickens, they were all confused looking outside. They finally realized it was only in the pot I set in the coop and they devoured it. A little pre Christmas treat I guess. Stay warm all.

Evening All... busy day here on the hill. Went with my youngest daughter today and helped her with the cutting and placing in the stand, her christmas tree of choice. Then I splitt one row of wood out of 3....hope to get the other two done before the next snowfalls. It's a mixture of red elm, bitternut hickory, and butternut. This time of year I spread the ashes on the driveway for traction. I think I might try a few in the big coop? It seems dusty enough in there already without ashes though.
Jim has a friend that discovered he has lung cancer and has to delete the flock and bators...he has LG,s a sportsman and some others, as well as his flock. Anyone interested let me know. That has to be a real bite in the gut, eh!

Just lost my stepfather Thanksgiving night to lung cancer. Horrible horrible disease. He was healthy, as far as anyone knew, until August. He had non-small cell cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) grade IV. Supposed to be "smoker's type" though he never smoked a day in his life.

hey everyone how's it goin cold enough for you lol. Been prettty busy around here with the cold and getting ready tto go back to school ! Who would of thought I would be goin back to school at 44 years old!!

I got two of my chickens from sunnyside in beaverdam I had 11 but they ended up hawk food before I figured out they weren't running away. They are ok my roo is beautiful. He's a mix they call a special black but he is very friendly and even good with my little one. The hen is pretty hard to get close to unless you have food and she's a brown but a great layer she started laying at about 20 weeks and lays jumbo eggs. She is just a little smaller than my rir

The rest of my flock I got from my pet chicken.com but I think they get them from mcmurrey. I ordered 13 chics from them and they all looked great when I got them and were on time. They are a pretty mixed bag but I just ordered the kind of birds that I wanted to look at.


Had a mess in the coop this morning! The buttheads tipped over their 3gal waterer and then I had to chip all that frozen bedding out and clean the coop! At least they picked the warmest day to do it.

Good Morning All! My start with the chicken sickness began with ordering 15 cornx and 10 sex link reds from Sunnyside they sent an extra red because one chick didn't look healthy and turned out it wasn't it only lasted 2 days, But the rest all turned out great! I'd order from them again. Bigz and ODrh sorry to hear that my BIL is going to that Cancer Treatment Center in Chicago now. The hospital gave him 6 months without treatment and a year with. It's been 4 months and he's doing the treatments and has made great strides. There's always hope! Finally got the printer on line will try today to make cards. cd think it's great that your going back to school! A friend of mine and I went back in our early 30's we were the old guys in the classes. Payed off I retired at 55 and he's going in 3 more years. Hope it works out for ya! But it's scary at first. Bigz think with all this snow my planned wood making is done till spring. So much for plans eh? Have a great one!

drh thanks for the words of encouragement. sorry to hear about your friend my prayers are with him.

wana throw out a question two of my roos have frost bite on their combs. they were fine until this morning my guess is when they tipped over their waterer it put all thet moisture in the air and it caused the frost bite because even when it was really cold they were doing great. i know you can put vaseline on their combs to prevent frost bite but what can you do now that you have it? they are not frozen any longer are they going to lose their combs or the points on them? i figure they will just like a cats ears right.

get them somewhere warm, but slowly warm them up if the comb is not black its 50-50 you can save it, but from this point on you will need to be more carefull so they don't frost again. rub/massage the comb to get the cirulation back
