Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good nearly afternoon! I am very lazy today--slept like crap last night!
somad.gif
I hate when I lie awake and watch the clock...just knowing that I will feel like this the next day...
ChrisD--I figure if they lose their comb they lose their comb! Doesnt seem to mess them up any if they arent show birds that is! I figure that all my Anconas will lose the points this winter--no frostbite yet, but we arent even half done with cold yet! Actually the BO roo that is in the house looks like he was dubbed because he lost all his points 2 winters ago...he is still "hanging around" in my kitchen BTW...no change in his legs.
Well, I cooked that duck last night. It was FANTASTIC! The skin wasnt the same as your store bought duck...but the meat was really tasty. (it was a muskovy) I am going to debone the rest of it and make some type of thing for supper with the remaining meat. Not sure just what as yet!
It sure is nice with the sun shining this morning! My thermometer says 20 so it's off with the horse blankets! Dont want to spoil those guys too much.
I use wood ash in my coop but not on the bedding. I have a box that I mix wood ash, DE and Sevin in that the birds dust bathe in to keep the mites down. It seems to work pretty well.
That is really crummy about the cancer! My friend down the road was diagnosed with "pigeon lung" and he had to get rid of all inside birds and he stopped butchering birds for sale too. He was on oxygen for a while but he is looking really good now. He still can have his birds outside as long as he doesnt spend any time with them in the coops. I guess he was lucky. I would hate to have to get rid of all mine! Prayers to all our friends that are suffering from cancer!
Well dd24 wants to bake up cookies when she gets home at noon so I guess I better get off here and get something ready...lazy, lazy, lazy--that is me today! Have a fantastic day everyone! Terri O

Hello to all, totally agree cancer is a rough thing it took my father inlaw 5-6 years back and it was a rough time for our family.
Lookin outside the birds are everywhere and even the pheasants are raiding the flowering crab apples in the tree. The balancing act is funny to watch. I've had some chickens separated for two weeks now to start collecting eggs to hatch. How long till they should be fertile with just the roo in the pen? Have a great afternoon. Going to get a tree this afternoon with some of the family members. Mike

Hi, I'm pretty new here. I live in the fox valley area. I'm wondering, does anyone around here know of anywhere that would "process" chickens for me? Thanks!

Welcome sadies! I'm just east of Appleton, in your backyard

Maybe someone else can chime in about processing places. We just do it ourselves, but we have a lot of space.

Terri, I've been watching my Anconas close, put vaseline on them the colder nights this week. So far they look great. Their combs were warm even when the coop was hovering around 5 above. Fingers crossed.

Someone was ordering from Sandhill...BCC and somebody else...

I like them too. I guess I consider them one step up from a hatchery. Just a mom and pop place, selling chicks and heirloom seeds.

And cancer -

Good healing vibes going out for those dealing with it.

Candled my 5 silkie eggs today and at least 2 are showing veins day 4. Yeeeeeeeeeee! I'm tickled considering they got hung up in the mail and l figured thery were frigidly done for.

Sadies, we are north of Appleton and we too process our own, but I am sure for some food and good fellowship a few of us could be talked into helping you learn...

Scored a HUGE deal at work today, got 3 4x8 sheets of 1/2 inch Polycarb for $100. WOOT

. It will make perfect A-Frame brooder house sides. Now if it would just get warm enough to start on them.

Chickens and bunnies are doing great, despite the cold. They looked at me like "Hey wheres the grass" today when I walked in the coop. Goofy girls..LOL Will have to get some more growing for them.

Well, off to play a shepherd at the live Nativity scene. Stay warm all, I am going to try to. Good thing there's hot cider to drink!!!

Hurley, What is it about silkies? I picked up 2 last fall, and I must say they have stolen the heart of this big old farm boy. Such sweet birds....unless broody, LOL.

Good Fish Fry Friday To all.... Thanks for all the kind words. Welcome sadies...nothing but good folks here, always willing to help. If we all lived in the same countryside, it would bring back neighbors of old!
Yep, I agree Doc that the stuff in the woods that needs cuttin is gonna have to wait. I'm thinkin maybe I'll notch a couple of the widow makers when it gets closer to spring, and let the spring winds knock em down. Ain't gonna do it now and have em lay in the wet stuff for months. i splitt another row today, and have one to go. Threw prolly 3 cords of fresh splitt stuff in the basement....I love the aroma....I just truly love the aroma!
Good luck with your hatches.
Way to go DA with your volunteer nativity scene work. It's only possible because of willing folks to help like you!
Brought the tree in today, and suzie gave it a trimming....started a little charlie brown, but ended up sweet!
The fryers are heatin up for the fish and frys....almost as good as venzun steak and eggs!

Sadies!!! Just west of Appleton here!

Found this doing a search for you.
http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/poultry_processors/search_results.php?State=WI

I do believe there are 1 or 2 places in the Waupaca area that process, but I bet you would have better luck just asking locally who would process for you.

BigZ tell Jim I am sorry about his friend. Cancer sucks.

Apparently our driver is ok. The news media is now going after the trucking company. How in the heck do they think a fully loaded truck is going to stop on a dime with no warning of what is up ahead????

My question is, if they knew traffic was backed up for miles why did they not post a police car warning the oncoming traffic of what was ahead?

Celebrating Christmas at the in-laws this Sunday so I have to run fast to get my shopping done. I hope I can get out of work early tomorrow!

Off to watch Bones and NCIS.

Stay warm everyone! Enjoy the weekend!

Hey all thanks for the tips on the frost bite. I checked them out and the combs weren't frozen any longer but they don't look too good but like T.O said it doesn't affect them just kinda liked the way they looked but we will see. Everything was goin great until they knocked their 3 gallon waterer over and that was the night it got down to 10 below here so that's what did it I think.

Bigz there's nothin like the smell of fresh cut wood is there lol

Have a good one
