Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning,

I have just 6 minutes until i have to leave..

Stacy, turning near the end is not that crucial,, the embryos can move themselves.. I have been leaving the eggs right in the incubation tray,, the chicks get caught once in awhile, but do not get harmed..
when I stop the turner for the hatching eggs, the incubating eggs also stop,, just for a couple of days, I don't see any difference in the hatching of the later eggs.. when the hatch is over, I start the turner again..

I have about a half dozen new chicken chicks this morning.. they seem so large after having mostly guineas lately ..

one minute to go..

Morning everyone. Still a bit chilly but it keeps the skeeters away yet and makes chores a bit easier than in the afternoon.

Gotta still clean out the gazebo, where mama and the babies and the chickens live. It's nasty in there as the chickens poop everywhere to create hills. Not good.

Stacie, I might just take you up on the offer later! And yes, been debating coming by your place for about a week but always figure you might be too busy and/or going to your appointments. And yes, I had chickenpox already, so no worries there!

Oki, gonna get the rest done outside and see bout figuring out the participants for Saturday. Til later then...

Something got into the chicken coop the other night and killed three hens at the farm where the chickens I hatched out live. Does anyone close by have chickens that are no longer needing heat lamps? I would need around 3-5 hens, all standard size but no breed preference. A nice barnyard variety, and friendly would be ideal.

good afternoon,

almost got the door done, and then I ran out of screws.. only need 6 of them,, hardly pays to go to F&F for that few items.. I was just there yesterday and bought feed all around..

..
this is the door jamb with the Great Stuff that oozed out.. It gets hard spongy like when it dries..
then I cut the excess away with a sharp knife .. sometimes you can just break it off ..

...
this is what it looks like when you really put way too much in..
note the door sill.. those chickens just have no respect for a job well done..

..
this is the sill from inside the coop,, it is about a 4 inch step down to the floor..
lots of clearance under the door for swinging over the bedding and poop.
that board at the sill will be removed,, it is just the form for the concrete.. Or I can leave it there until it rots away,,

didn't have breakfast yet,,
time for a sandwich and/or a piece of raspberry pie.

as always, you can click on the pictures to make them larger ..

wildsam,, it sounds to me like you are keeping those ducks inside way longer than you need to.

Evening All...great pics posted...thanks for that!

Good brats and potato salad tonight....fresh ho-made apple pie for desert....I'm way over full.

Nope cuties...it will be a next Spring event here, if all goes well. I'm just to busy this summer.

Just finished cutting and splitting a huge Butternut tree...what a shame that it wasn't cut for boards. The tree was easily a full cord. The ford is dead and I'm on a mission to get er done....I'm hurting for firewood, and that's my story....

Have fun...bigz

Oh, I'd love to have a butternut tree, or two. Live ones, that is.

Glad to hear you're getting er done, Bigz.

I hear you on being too busy this summer, Bigz. What is up with that, anyway?

Not much new here. Been taking advantage of the cooler weather & weeding all the gardens.

My arms are rubber.................

Not looking forward to the heat wave to come.

Jim, what do you mean that I leave them in longer than I need to??? Anybody is outside besides the 3-4 week olds that don't have their big bird feathers yet, and the couple of 2 day olds he brought home yesterday. Everybody else is outside in the condos or duck houses...

Visited for a few hours with Stacie and had a good time. Even made a bit of water visie in her one pond by fishing out a 5gal bucket full with duck weed. Got home and the duckies (and the littlest ducklings with mama outside) couldn't get enough. Most even forgot to dive and bathe for gobbling up the goodies!

Cleaned out all the buckets and dishes, then the kennels I will use for transporting the birds, repeat all over later this evening.

Now am finally relaxing a bit, cuddling with my Queenie and enjoying the cool air. Planning on going to bed early and pre-sleep a bit for early Saturday morning (yawn!). Have a nice evening everyone!

Me and the boys got the chicken coop loaded today. I got all the windows framed in on the north side of the screen room and all perlins are in and ready for tin roof. Had a nice visit with Sammie today and was glad I had green muck to make her duckies very happy. I spied thru Plexiglass and seen one guinea has pipped out of the 22 eggs from first batch. No pips on the bazillion layer eggs yet. Doubt they'll hatch in the next 24 hours. Now for today to put the finishing touches on the coop, load cages for me and Sammie, fix my canopy thingy, load tables, chairs and chickies and be ready to leave home no later than 4am so I'm all set up and ready for swap to open. I was late for the last 2 swaps and it puts a damper on sales as they are usually cleared out by 8:30-9 am for rush hour.

While taking Sammie on a tour I caught Zeus beating the crap outta Hephaestus and now he's a little brain damaged. They've been together since last fall after quarantine without problems until today so I'll be in search of a really good quality BLRW rooster! Im going to keep 2 of my best cockerels out the 2 month olds to grow out but would still like to find a better roo. He's in with the 2 months old BLRW and EE chicks and checked on him before dark and he's still walking drunk. Tyler's quite upset as he was his fair shower and I have no other Blrw for him to show. Also checked on the lavender orp EE hen and her foot is really swelled but after examining it, its not bumble foot and all bones are normal so not sure what happened to her now.

Hi all! Sorry I have not postd in a while. Life was a little bit,of a whirlwind. Got let go from my last job because small business owner decided that since I put a handbook and policies in place, he did not need hr... He is a little nuts.
Got a new job but they wanted me to start right away and it is 4 days a week instead of three which took some schedule rearranging. My sister in town from TX, SIL in town from CA, rummagr sale and a frien is working in our laundry room/ mud room so house is a disaster and I just did a major paint job in last 24 hours in there before shelves and bench go in. Plus assorted kids summer activities So busy!!

Chickens are good, anxiously waiting for our science fair babies from March 1 to start laying. We got rid of our silkie rooster and now just have the BCM roo from that hatch as our only boy...his crow is so weak sounding and silly. But he has two BCM girls and a bunch of others too.

Guinea owners...are there eggs shells normally much tougher than chicken eggs shells? Some days it feels like Fort Knox to break them open.

Ok off to work. Hubby and kids are going to meet me after I get off at 2 and we are going to some stat parks in the area to go hiking. I need that fresh air and excercise for my legs, painting gave the arms a workout. Later all!
