good morning,

I will post, even though I have nothing newsworthy,,

DD#2 called me early and got me out of bed.. wanted me to drive her old car to where she sold it to. then she bought me breakfast and we had a nice chat ..

I got the drag all ready to go.. I am anxious to use it.. I have a spare garden spot that I want to work up and get ready for next year.. going to plant some buckwheat on it.. we will see how that goes.. kind of late to be planting, I think.. but I have the seed and it will take only a few minutes to drag up that spot .. I just need it to dry a bit after all of the rain we had ..

threatening to rain again right now..

I checked the grass seed.. It all seems to have stayed put.. It should begin to sprout within the next few days..

I wonder where all the people went ? Facebook seems to draw them away..

I don't have anything to do with facebook.. I get posts once in awhile, but I never comment..

keep watching for that turkey,, it only takes once to follow her to the nest ..

I have a question for you Jim. I have28 hens and 6 roos and my teen agers about 20 weeks. They haven't laid yet. I heard it might be because I have to many roos. Three of them just found out their roos they don't leave the girls alone. I have one for sure that is gone . Then if can,t get rid of the otherts I guess to freezer camp. So are the roos hindering these young ladies?

It depends on the breed of chicken. Some breeds take a loooong time before they are mature enough to start laying. While sex links will usually start at 18 weeks old. The average age is 20 to 24 weeks, but breed is a very important factor.

It may have something to do with the number of roos too. Can you separate them from your girls?

Well after some serious discussion we nixed the coop on our land, and are building one next to our layer coop at the house. Between work that pays, regular chores, 50 broiler chicks in the brooder, and building their coop....not a lot of posting time.

Family I'm partnering with on the broiler coop has done the bulk of the work. He is a carpenter. I make him keep repeating the words..." its a chicken coop ". DW & I have already decided if a tornado hits were leaving the house & heading for the coop. I told him between our yearly batch of broilers, we'll use it as a chicken sitter facility....like the dog sitter places.

I'm afraid by the time were done the township will ask why we didn't apply for a building permit.

Jim & my friend would make quite the pair.

6 roosters to 28 hens is not that bad of odds, I have heard of worse odds. The number usually does not have anything to do with laying ability, it might have to do with the hens having the time to actually get to a nest box if they have a few males chasing them. Your pullets are young, and they just need some more time. Eat a few of those males and you will be fine. Two of them should be perfect.

I finally got online.. we are on again and off again,, they are burying a cable out this way,, then we can get land line internet service from Frontier.. that won't be available until about January, 2015.

we have been pushing the phone company for this for a couple of years..

I just butchered 4 roosters.. a couple of them were SQ pure breed Delawares.. but I was having the same problem of too many roosters .. I have about 18 hens.. had 6 roosters.. I saw a hen squat and get surprised 4 times before she could get away.. that did it for me.. the roosters were gone within the week..

Now I have just the really old colored rooster and one Delaware rooster.. the yard is much calmer now.. the hens are growing feathers back onto their backs.. and Annie said that egg production is going up..

I can honestly say that if I could rent/buy a rooster in the spring, I would not keep any roosters at all..

some heavy breeds and heritage breeds and americaunas are late layers.. but at 20 to 24 weeks, you should start anticipating eggs.. and if the new pullets are getting bred, then the eggs should not be far off.. If the roosters are the same age as the pullets, and they are doing the breeding, that is a good sign that the egg laying is about to start, also..

Hi All!

Yep, doubt if I will go turkey hunting for the next week! Looks way too hot and humid for me to be out for more than a few minuets. Chores will have to be done in short spurts too.

Ball joint on the van broke today

I accidentally called the wrong repair place to come get it and fix it.... may work out better than where Paul wanted me to take it though. Real nice guy came and got me and the van and he said he should have it done tomorrow (today to all of you...lol) $260 including the towing.

looks like rain heading our way.. won't get much outside work done today..

should be able to fix the two loose teeth on the drag, though.. between the rain drops..

no pips yet,, tomorrow is due date..

I think I will head into town for a cuppa.. have to drive GS to work in a couple of minutes ..

too bad about the ball joint , Cind.. not a bad price for the fix.. still a lot of $$ anyway,,

Rain, rain and more rain. Supposed to keep going all thru the weekend. I sure hope not. But it seems that summer is already trying to leave again?! Not ready for that yet.

Between car problems and chores and heading to town just for the car totally dying on me yesterday, I'm currently soaked from taking care of everyone again this morning. Hopefully it lets up a bit so that this rain can at least try to soak into the ground. Getting a bit muddy around the edges, but the ducks are loving it and dig holes wherever I let them. Camouflaged ducks. Lol

Still no luck here with selling some of our ducks. Price reduced and posted everywhere I can think of. Not a single response so far. We really need to get rid of some but butchering is NOT an option here. They are pets. I couldn't do it... let alone eat it when I know whom I'm eating...

And no, I'm on Facebook but not all day long. Too much to do to have that pleasure of sitting and playing games all the time. Would be nice every now and then tho.

Debating to see if the car will start to head to Hayward and get some groceries. Maybe a rain coat since getting soaked and cold it getting old. Doubt I'll have any luck with that tho. Oh well. Then just figuring out what to make for dinner besides cleaning out the coops and condos I guess... Later

And then off to Baraboo to see a small horse/pony for Sydney. We will see how gentle she really is fingers crossed!
