Where is it illegal to make a rooster a capon? Even the Humane Society states there are no state of federal regulations prohibiting caponizing.

Back at home. Always nice to visit family!
I just read that article,, it does not say that the practice is illegal,, it does state that it SHOULD be illegal..
the author is entitled to his opinion,,

If 7% of the birds die,, does the extra weight of the other 93% make up for the lost birds ?

I am a patient man,, I don't mind waiting for chickens to grow to their weight naturally ..

I know of a family near Bevent who caponized about 200 per year.. their mortality rate was about 7%..

I am confident that they were more than amateurs at it..

Cuties-I have them fixed, yes....but not Theo (yet). But I guess the only reason that I see for having a rooster is for breeding purposes.

BTW-what age would those of you with LGD experience suggest to neuter Theo. I've heard that since they take longer to mature that you should wait until at least a year.

relax...

he was teasing for one..and adding a little flavor to the discussion.

Hello everyone!!

I am so glad Internationals are over. I am still recovering. It was brutal. I clerked Saturday and grateful for the learning opportunity. I did hundreds of calls. They had a huge amount of calls this year. Cute little things, but, noisy in such volume.

I placed 5th out of 7 with my black pullet. She was only 5 months old and gypsy faced. I did not expect her to do well, but, I was disappointed all the same when I seen what she lost to. They were huge birds, but, I still thought with all of her faults she should have won anyway!!!...lol

My White took BV, but no competition other than her sister. Again, she was also too young and not laying yet. I sware most of those pullets were over a year old...one pullet entered.... weighed 30lbs (the breeder told me). A slight stretch in my opinion, but they were huge birds!!

Keep in mind that this is much more difficult than castrating a mammal, since birds carry their testes inside the body cavity, and that it may be illegal where you live. Check local animal welfare laws before you try to castrate a rooster.

Here is the article that had me form my question. I'm glad you all get such a good laugh out of it. Here I thought this site was for learning new things, but instead it's just a group of people that were born with all available knowledge that can look down their nose at us pathetic souls.

Afternoon All....spot on angiebubs with why we are here. A lot of folks have learned a lot here, and I know I was one of them! Everyone has different situations...and we all can share thoughts and lessons!

Thanks for the heads up about the show delisha....they can be really a learning lesson...and ..the judges make calls that they think is best for the breed overall...in my opinion. Some will give you more detail about your birds, than others...hope you still had fun!

Taking a break from the woodpile, till the next time...sounds like rain tomorrow for Packer Thursday.
They are gonna have their hands full, I'm thinkin.

Later...bigz

Wow, take it easy! Sheesh! All I was asking for was proof of legislation passed outlawing the practice of caponizing. That was it. A vague statement stating it "might" be illegal is not enough proof.

If you have been following this thread for any length of time you should know when people are just joshing you.

If people are going to get up in arms over the castration of birds, I can see how the castration practices of sheep, pigs, and cattle are soon going to be outlawed as well.
