Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Wow, take it easy! Sheesh! All I was asking for was proof of legislation passed outlawing the practice of caponizing. That was it. A vague statement stating it "might" be illegal is not enough proof.

If you have been following this thread for any length of time you should know when people are just joshing you.

If people are going to get up in arms over the castration of birds, I can see how the castration practices of sheep, pigs, and cattle are soon going to be outlawed as well.
As a youngster, I helped catch baby pigs for castration,, let me tell you, that is every bit as invasive as caponizing a rooster,,
(for sterilization I guess)
.

You misunderstand me so I'll clear it up and move on. I never said it was illegal or that I was against it. I simply saw some text and could not find any further info so I asked you fine people. Someone brought up a topic I never heard of and I was curious. I thought that's what the site was for, but I feel I was mistaken. No sweat off my back I'll happily go back to learning as I go with own flock.

Oh my goodness everyone . . . Let's take a deep breath and think about what we're bickering about. Nobody is killing your dog or giving you ebola. How did the claws come out so fast? I think if this was a discussion in person, things would have been taken diffetently. And everyone would accept that it was just a discussion about neutering a chicken and not something to get angry at each other about. Come on . . .

maybe someone could email Ron Kean at the UW Madison Poultry department and ask their questions of him about caponizing.

busy day here, working on finishing up 1 project and continuing to work on another besides finishing a rental unit. No rain here yet today which was good as we were able to cut our grass tonight, Moved some of DD's Andalusians into the coop and then moved our group of Welsummer and GLW chicks into the bigger pen, they are growing out pretty nice. All we have left to move are 3 cockerals that DD will need to move her 4-H project forward and then we can take down the 12' x 6' pen. Not sure what we will do with all the space

so far we have 14 quail hatched out- they will move out to their brooder tomorrow morning!

have a good one

I can't even figure out who is talking about what post. I think the caponizing topic has dragged on a slow death...next subject!!!

Is everyones coop ready for winter yet? I have so much to do here still to get it/them ready for winter. I have a couple nasty chicken butts and everything i read tells me to soak their lil booties in water-ummmm what to do about this when temps are so low? I plan on getting out the shop vac and cleaning the coop out one last time, putting down a nice deep bed of shavings, fall treatment with eprinex, build a cover over part of the run for snow/rain protection, wrap part of the run with plastic to block snow/rain, paint the one last side of the barn, oh and build a small coop on the other inside portion of the barn! Whew!

I started the caponizing topic just to see if anyone around here did it, and it's safe to say: NO, so I'll end it here.

Now as far as winterizing the coop, my main question is when to close the west window. It's about 1 1/2' by 2' and has a solid wood door that will shut it off for the winter.
I do plan on putting some clear plastic on the bottom half on the south and east side of the run though.
I have built my cookie tin heater, and have two waterers to switch out with now.

So------bring it on!

I havent put plastic around my run in the past, and the run gets filled up with snow....theres me out there trying to shovel a small path for them to get out. Or my daughter made a maze thru the 3 ft of snow and trailed scratch...the chickens loved it. Going to try and shelter a small area of the run this year since I have added to the flock and hope they will spend more time outside

Judi, don't forget, I have Valbazen too if you want to use it.

I am way down on hens since the punt dog killed 8 of them. Now I have 4 that won't go in at night. I couldn't reach 2 to get them in the coop, so hopefully they're there in the morning. I'm so sick of them not going in and not sure why. Maybe because my rooster is so hormonal in the morning.

Poke poke poke..... ;)

Should know by the end of the week about either job.

Chickens are settling in well; Amy is trying to impress his new harem. They gave one of the grays and the black orp to their friends, the orp was picking on all the other chooks.

Watched Castle, Blacklist, and now Once Upon a Time...... Off to play minecraft. :)
